Ace Had A Stroke :-(

I hope he continues to improve. I'd check the blood pressure--it's a non-invasive test so it can't hurt to be certain.

Except it's near impossible to get a true reading on our nervous hounds. Ghs are documented dogs know to have white cost syndrome :-)

Luckily Ace isn't a grey - the vets love him because he's so chill. Will ask the vet about it when they call.

My vet used to take three readings over the course of 1/2 hour. Not a good solution if your dog flips out at the vet, but if they're reasonably okay with being there multiple readings help.

Pearl's cardiologist use to have the BP stuff all ready for us so we would walk in, straight thru the waiting room and into the exam room and get done. THEN after the BP we would check in 'officially'. The vet said that even if the reading is high, if there is hypertension, it would be way higher than white-coat syndrome.

Bps are tonight to get--even when you are ready teddy for your patient it's really hard to get true readings--of course we do our best (you should see the antics we do to get readings on fractious cats!). Most Drs take that into consideration. For example I was able to bring home the Doppler unit to monitor home readings on my girl Shannon--completely normal readings--the quickest reading I could get in the clinic her pressure read 300!

Re: the aspirin, if you can do it then be sure and use the BUFFERED aspirin and not the plain

Baby aspirin is fine. It's such a small dose it's fine on their tummys. In fact Ohio State had me give it concurrently with pred with one of my girls (normally an NSAID and a corticosteroid are not to be given together).

I am so sorry to read this. :( I went through the same thing with Merlin (10) last year. His stroke was pretty severe, and caused central vestibular disease. He was hospitalized for four days and had to learn to walk again. It took months but he bounced back and is doing great! When I read your post it reminded me of the day we came home and founding flailing about on the floor. We think he'd been there, dizzy and thrashing about, unable to stand, for quite some time, which was absolutely heartbreaking. It was one of the worst days of my life. :cry1 I am SO relieved that Ace's stroke was moderately mild.

As for it happening again - I know exactly what you mean because I always worry that I'll come back from work and find him like that again. However, Merlin's neurologist told us that it is relatively rare to see a second stroke, particularly in greys. So I try to hold on to that and wanted to share it with you. Best of luck, and I hope Ace feels better very soon.

He had another stroke tonight. :( Much more mild than Sunday, I think - the boys went out for their evening walk and Ace did his business and was tooling around the field. He went to turn and fell over. DH brought him over to me outside the house and he was very wobbly. By the time the taxi arrived to take him to the vet (maybe 10min later) he was charging up the stairs to follow Donovan to the bedroom, though, and the vet said he looked almost normal when we got there (just a bit wobbly still).

They're running bloodwork now, and we have a set from November to compare against - I'm guessing it'll still be normal, unless his bronchitis meds have caused something (which the vet said was unlikely). They checked his BP, which was normal. I asked about the aspirin, but the vet said that we should hold off until we know the underlying cause (if we can find one). She said that if we don't find something in the bloodwork, we'll have to aim to manage his symptoms as he has them, and hope he recovers from them quickly (and bring him in if it seems prolonged).

So, not the best evening, but at least he's bouncing back fairly quickly. Should hear back from the vet tonight or tomorrow morning with bloodwork results.

Thanks, all, for your support.

Finally got bloodwork back - everything's normal. Vet's advice is to keep an eye on him and call if he has another stroke. So far he seems ok, fingers crossed he stays that way.
