Worried About Legs

Recommended Posts

Many of you know Legs has quite a few issues with his heart including DCM, arrhythmias & premature ventricular contractions. He's on a bunch of meds which have seemed to help. He still has occasional scary episodes but they have decreased a lot since I now know what's wrong & don't allow him to run or exercise at all when the sun is out.

Anyway, the last couple of weeks he has only been picking at his breakfast, which is VERY out of character. He's a total chow hound. He's also been coughing a bit here & there, but nothing too alarming - I probably would not have even noticed if it were another dog. But last night, he woke me up coughing for a good 10 mins :( I know coughing is not a good sign. I emailed my vet to see what she thinks. I'm guessing he'll need yet another ultrasound to see what's going on & if we should change/add to his meds. I'm worried. It's very stressful living w/ the constant fear that his heart will stop working at any moment. :brokenheart

Sending hugs and positive thoughts across the miles. Hopefully it's just a change in meds that will set everything right again.

I too hope that a minor change in meds will make the symptoms disappear. :goodluck

He needs an x-ray--looking for fluid buildup :-(

Edited to add that he may be coughing also because the heart may be so enlarged now that it's putting pressure on his trachea---x-ray needed for that too. Hugs to Legs (and you too).

Agree with tbhounds.

I lost my most beloved Zuki to CHF one year ago. The coughing, the loss of appetite. I would just like to say, please don't live in constant stress and fear, because he is reading you. Please just love every moment you have together, and try to be strong for your beloved boy. I know how difficult it is. Sending both of you a lot of love. :grouphug

Just wanted to add, when he has a coughing episode, and not just a cough here and there, it may be best to get him to the vet, or a cardiac specialist if one is available. :grouphug

Aw, I'm sorry to read this Lucy. Hoping it is something easily addressed by tweaking his meds. :grouphug

FWIW, a spoonful of honey every few hours may help to alleviate his coughing until you can get it figured out. A friend was finally able to get some sleep when he started using it for his foster dog who had kennel cough. I don't know if it will help in this situation, but I don't *think* it would hurt to try it. Maybe check with your vet first to be safe if you decide to.

Lucy, I'm sorry to read the update on Legs. Our Jack's heart enlarged so much that it put pressure on his trachea and he would cough. I hope meds can alleviate your boys symptoms.

This is me, for the last 2 years with Lazer. First it was blood clots IN his heart - Now we are worried about CHF. He is on

tons of medications and supplements. When we go for our walks, I let him sniff every bush, pee on every branch, roll in anything stinky (bath afterwards) and then he eats pretty much anything he wants.

For our boys, Life is NOW,, at the moment. we live it as best as we can ....

fingers and toes crossed for your boy and mine, if you don't mind sharing -

and an extra hug for you!
