Pennymom
Could I ask for prayers, good thoughts, and healing vibes for Penny? She is at the vet today because in the last week she has developed quite a limp on her left hind. Last week the vet shot some radiographs of her knee, because it seemed painful, and saw no evidence of the evil C. However, she was also painful on hip extension and he needs her out in order to take those films. So she's in the office today, getting a dental and more radiographs. Looking back, it seems like this has been coming on gradually. I'd say the past month her energy level has been lower than usual. We attributed it to her need for a dental, as she has awful teeth (despite brushing and rinsing almost daily) and gets sort of all-over body sore when her teeth are hurting. Then last week I'd see her periodically hold up her back leg. I checked her all over and realized that the nails on the lame leg are not wearing down like the nails on the sound leg, which again makes me think this is something that has been coming on. After Friday's x-rays, we did a few days of Rimadyl and tramadol, which did lead to some (85%) improvement, but when we ran out of the mediation it was back, and worse. Yesterday she did quite a bit of hopping on three legs. She is a very active dog (hiking multiple times a week, dog park twice a week, etc) and so I keep hoping we've got a soft tissue injury or a bit of arthritis that has been aggravated, but you all know what I'm fearing. She is only 8 years old. She will likely be a miserable pup when she gets home tonight - I predict more extractions, and I just hope that's the worst that we have to deal with. I'm blessed with a greyhound-savvy vet, as well as a sister who is a small animal vet who is always just a phone call away. This is the princess Penelope Anne Houndie, just two weeks ago with her sister Treasure in the lead: Quote Image removed, not within Signature Guidelines. Long, long recoup but beats the heck out of the big bad C. Good thoughts! Well, at least a working hypothesis. Her rads showed absolutely no sign of osteo and not even much arthritis! Her ACLs, etc also seem in tact and nothing going on there. The vet believes it is the ilipsoas. Plan is rest, cold laser, gabapentin and a recheck in a week. In tears of relief at my desk. kudzu, could you let me know more about your lurcher's recovery? Thanks all for the good wishes. Pennymom
Just an update - we had a very scary night last night. The vet's office called in the afternoon and said that Penny was really having a hard time coming to, and that they thought we should leave her overnight. Since they are not staffed overnight, I declined and said I'd pick her up as late as possible but that she needed to be at home for the night. When we arrived, she was laying in the middle of the floor, panting extremely hard. I immediately began thinking of malignant hyperthermia, so I made them take her temp and it was 102.9. She was not really very responsive though she was conscious. We took her home with instructions to get her some wet cool towels for her feet and head and monitor her temp - if it got over 103 we were supposed to head to the e-vet. We cranked the AC to max and started sponging her off with cool water, and got her temp down. It took longer for the panting to subside. They figure she had an adverse reaction to the pre-med they used, which was acepromazine. If I had know they had planned to use it I would have said no, as we had a previous dog react badly to it. I won't let them use it again on any of my dogs. This morning she is still extremely groggy, slightly confused and refusing food. The vets say that she should be back to her normal self by tomorrow morning, so Penny's Dad and I are just taking shifts with her so she's not alone. So glad I didn't agree to leave her unattended overnight! Quote Image removed, not within Signature Guidelines.
