Congratulations!

I thought the modesty was a great pic, but I think the aw shucks pic is even better. :)

Thanks, all. Although Milo is as sweet and engaging as they come, he is a challenging dog. Last week he ate five books and half a rabbit. (Romie ate the other half.)

This program gives greyhounds a waiver on the sit requirement -- they can lie down, instead. Many of the people in the class, few of whom had ever seen a greyhound before, were eager to tell me that greyhounds can't sit. :riphair Milo is only part greyhound, but he (and my full greys) sit just fine, thank you very much. I also learned that greyhounds can't do agility because of bad hips and legs. Good grief.

I have a question for you....

We've been thinking about getting Potter his Canine Good Citizen certificate. He would pass everything with flying colors *except* the sitting part! He

just doesn't sit. It's either stand or lie down. In the year we've had him, we've never seen him sit down even once. We took him to get Christmas pictures done this

year as part of a fundraiser, but when the photographer tried to adjust him and make him sit, poor puppy just looked miserable! How do you

all get your greys to sit? Is it odd that Potter just won't have anything to do with it?

Thanks :)

Amy

Amyb, no, it's not weird that Potter doesn't "get" sitting. Here is an article by Kathleen Gilley with her theories about why, and her method of using teaching sit as a bonding tool with a dog: http://www.geocities.ws/katnexta/articleSit.html . My first 3 greys were relatively easy to train, but honesty compels me to admit that my beautiful sweet Nutmeg still thinks "sit" means to let me to position her this way. Her little peanut brain has never made the connection that it is something she could do on her own. And Romie, who didn't like a lot of body contact when he first arrived, freaked out a little with this. (Romie eventually learned to sit on command after I noticed he would sit outside on a slope, and I got him to associate that action with the word with praise and treats. I do train with food.)

Our class was connected with Therapy Dogs International, and TDI does have a waiver for sitting for greyhounds. Maybe Canine Good Citizen does, too -- ask a representative.

I will say that after struggling with Nutmeg and Romie, it amazed me at how easy it was to work with Milo. He responds so quickly to the "standard" methods. His main problems are being able to focus when there are a bunch of other dogs/people/treats around, and me not being quick enough for him. :)

Guest Woodsy

Hooray!!! I would love to get Greta certified as a therapy dog through the local vet school. However, she gets a little "mouthy" when she is bored or wants to play. She turned 3 on September 27, her foster family thinks she may grow out of it.
