I just want to say I am so sorry for anyone who has lost a pet, grey or otherwise to this disease. Scott and I have made the very difficult decision of letting Baxter go. Thank you all for your kind words during this ordeal.

I feel like a jerk....thank you all for the heartfelt sympathies, but Baxter is still with us for a few more days. :)

We have to make the arrangements with our vet.

Not a jerk at all. It's a hard time all around. Give him some extra scritchies from us, please, and tell him how handsome he is, OK?

Fritz will be starting pamidronate sometime this week. His tumor has grown, and since it's in that tiny bone, there's not a lot of room for it to grow and there's a bit of soft tissue swelling around it. We're hoping the pamidronate will help a little.

His attitude is amazing, and he still wants to run. It's really more that he's losing mobility with the leg than he's having pain. We did have a little bit of panting, but, adding gabapentin 100mg every 8 hours has ceased that.

He's just such a happy dog...it's just not time yet.

We're scheduled for Wednesday morning. He'll have his infusion and hang out there and I'll pick him up at lunch time. Dr. Bahns said it'd be no big deal if I can't come get him until 4:30...that's because she wants to keep him and love on him

The swelling is causing a mobility issue and I can tell he is confused by it. I really don't think that it HURTS, per se...but feels weird. Frustrating to see my bubby boo having this issue, even though he is SO happy, grabbing toys and running around.

Really makes me wish they could like, open up his leg, remove the ulna, and replace it with a rod or something. I know that's insane...

Not insane. They can replace a person's knee or hip. Why not a redundant leg bone on a dog?

Best of luck to you and Fritz.

When my Onyx got osteo and this was back 10+ years now, I remember checking out Colorado University which had a vet school because they were doing limited surgeries on osteo and saving the leg but, I think it was only front legs that were suitable and (I could be wrong here) I think they took most of the bone out and replaced with some type of rod.

I decided to go looking again and I found this article

http://www.news.colostate.edu/Release/4536

it talks about radiation first in the article and then later it talks about using cadaver bone.

Doing a little more digging - its looks like they are currently in a study with controlling pain in dogs with osteo link = http://www.csuanimalcancercenter.org/nv-01_pain_palliation_osteosarcoma

Kristin, I'm guessing your comment was more rhetorical than anything, but there are a number of places that do limb-sparing surgeries. I tried reading up on it when Twiggy was diagnosed, but it doesn't seem to be done very often, and not much information out there about it.

I'm glad Fritz is still feeling so good!

I am so happy to hear of all the good results everyone is having with their pups.

But it is with much regret to let you all know that we did let Baxter go yesterday afternoon....so he is now running on the other side of the Bridge, my sweet boy.

Does anyone know if I need to contact SEGA to let them know?

Thank you all for your support. We don't have another grey, and may not adopt another any time soon, but I will check in occasionally to see how you're all doing.

Much love,

Sharon

Sharon, I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't think you *need* to let SEGA know, but they would probably like to know.

Your boy was lucky to have you.

Godspeed, Baxter.

Sharon,

I'm sorry you've had to say goodbye to Baxter. I sent a copy of your announcement here to Patty Winters at SEGA.

Kristin - glad to hear Fritz is still doing so well and is so happy. Sending lots of good thoughts for you both tomorrow that everything goes well and Fritz gets all of the extra attention he can handle. :)

An update here... Gunner is slowly deteriorating which is incredibly sad to watch and know. He's definitely more tired and has more "panting" episodes and a more visible limp than in previous weeks. We're maxed on drugs (1 - 75mg Rimadyl - 2x's/day; 500mg Gabapentin - 3x's/day; 175mg Tramadol - 3x's/day). I do have the Tylenol 4 with codeine (sp?) available too which the Vet said I could give on top of all he's getting. We're watching closely because we don't want him to suffer more than he needs to.

Yet after yesterday, it seems he's not quite ready to leave us. He found a rabbit's nest in our yard yesterday evening (we've never seen a rabbit in our neighborhood in the four years we've been here). He had the baby rabbit in his mouth and when I realized this and yelled to him, he dropped it. It hopped and he took two steps before I told him to come to me. Thankfully he comes on command. Also thankful the baby rabbit wasn't hurt. With the neighbor's help, the baby rabbit is back in it's nest and I have covered it with a wheel barrow (per Wildlife refuge's directions - and I did shovel a "path" so the Mom could get under it). Checked this morning and it looks like the baby didn't come out as nothing was disturbed and there were no Mom tracks. Hoping she comes this evening to feed the little one otherwise I'll have to take it to the refuge so he/she can be rehabbed.

Other than this excitement yesterday, we're still spoiling Gunner, giving him extra loving and waiting for the sign.

Will continue to keep the others in my thoughts. Have a great rest of the week everyone,

Jean

P.S. Oh and the UPS and Fedex people are still the enemy and in his mind, they still require him to do his best barking and protecting of his Momma routine (just did it a minute ago). So we're not there yet. At this point, all I can say is it has been one heck of a roller coaster ride and I wouldn't wish this dreaded disease on anyone.

*sigh* I'm having a very hard time here. Fritz is his always very happy self...but his leg doesn't work. My head is just swimming with things...could we amputate at this point? Would it even make sense? Dammit I should've made the decision sooner. He's living as a tripod right now and doing fine. He just pulls up the bad leg and runs. But have we let it go too long now (we're about a month and a half past diagnosis)? Does the fact that it's in the ulna mean that it's rarer and therefore more aggressive? Less aggressive?

Yes, he's 12, but he's NOT TWELVE. Chronologically yes he is 12. Fitness level and attitude/spunk would put him at about age 7 or 8. He is still grabbing toys and running out into the yard. He is hopping and bowing at the gate when I get home just as he's done since I got him at age 3. He sails up onto my bed and up into the car. He can still jump into a top crate at the kennel.

Is what I'm thinking insane? This is so difficult. The decisions were simple with Sutra (proximal humerus tumor, at age 12, but he was SO frail and old) and with Pinky (distal femur tumor, age 8, we amputated). I have hesitated to amputate with Fritz because it's a front leg and to me that's a whole different ballgame than a rear leg. If he'd come up with osteo in a rear leg instead, he'd have had surgery a month and a half ago and I never would have thought twice. I'm now wondering why on earth I thought twice. I guess I was worried he wouldn't do well as a tripod. But now he's being one anyway.

I know that no one here can actually tell me what to do, because that's not what we do here. But to say that I am freaking out right now is a complete understatement. I can't turn my brain off, and usually, I can make a decision and be at peace with it. For the past few days now I've been thinking we should amputate, but wondering if it's too late now. If we were even to consider it I'd of course have his other limbs xrayed and his lungs...he's not a big guy at 57 lbs...and he's not thick either.

Wow Kristin - I'm so sorry you're have a really tough time right now with your decision.

As for whether or not you're insane, no you're not. You know your hound the best. Just like Pinky and Sutra, you knew they could handle the decision you made because you knew them so well. So, if it were me in your shoes right now, I'd be consulting with my Vet (or oncologist) asap. You will never know until you start asking the questions of the experts. I'm sure they will help you figure out the missing pieces that you need in order to make the right decision for Fritz. Wishing you all the best and a speedy process to getting to your answer.

Will be keeping you in my thoughts,

Jean
