Doolin Needs Some Healing Thoughts

Has Doolin been tested for worms lately? Spencer did a rapid swallowing back when he had hookworms and we didn't know it. Vets said the worms had migrated to the lungs in such a case, and the dog kind of coughs them up and swallows them. Hookworms dig channels in the tissues, and I wonder if that's what the "scratches" were. His trying to eat inappropriate stuff makes me wonder if it's him trying to push them out of his throat. Especially when you said that in the past this has correlated with tummy gurgles and stool problems, I couldn't help but remember that this all happened to Spencer too. But remember, if worms aren't shedding eggs at the time of the stool test, the test will come up negative. So even if it's negative, I'd repeat the fecal at weekly intervals for three weeks. And it's best done by a lab who has the ability to spin the sample rather than just float it.

Or you could just give him a proper course of Panacur and see if it helps.

Hope you get it sorted soon. I know how frustrating it is to know there's a problem but not know what it is! :grouphug

Just a thought: When my dear old Mom in her late 70's started to gag and choke on swallowing certain things, the doctors found out that her Thyroid function was all wrong. The correct medication put things back to normal.

Thanks, he has been being treated for hookworms since March. His next dose is supposed to be on Wednesday, but I think I may give it to him tonight. This very well could be what this swallowing thing is, it makes perfect sense. I will ask the specialist about it. Poor guy. He's a lot calmer now. He will randomly get up and start doing it again, but he doesn't get frantic and panicky. We put a muzzle on him because he is still trying to eat everything.

I don't think he is feeling sick, I think he is only vomiting because when he starts up he is swallowing a ton of air, you can hear it, all at the same time he is running around, not breathing. Plus, all he wants to do is eat!

I am sorry Doolin is starting to have troubles again. Sending positive thoughts that the specialist can figure this out.

Continued good wishes for Doolin.

I definately think that the specialist would be of some help - or if it's out of her area -she might be able to send you to someone else.

That air swallowing must be very scary, though - along with all the other symptoms.

My girl does the same thing-- although rarely. The last time it happened it was while I was brushing her teeth. Poor thing- she was doing that "hard" swallow act and then all she wanted to do was eat grass followed by vomiting multiple times. I just monitored her and the episode passed. I chalked it up to her snarfing the toothpaste.

I brush her teeth daily and it hasn't happened since. I'm not worried about it but, I can appreciate how scary it can be.

Hugs to the big Cowdog!

Oh no :( I am so sorry to hear this. i know how heart-wrenching it is to watch one's hound in distress, I've been through it too often with Merlin this year.

Sending a ton of good thoughts for Doolin.

Ugh, I'm so sorry Doolin's having problems again!! It's neverending isn't it. sad.gif

The wanting to eat everything makes me suspect it's a GI issue. Can you get him to take some slippery elm paste? It works wonders with Kelly when his IBD flares and his tummy's not feeling good.

No more advice but LOTS of hugs coming over the pond to you and your boy! grouphug.gifgrouphug.gifgrouphug.gif

Doolin is feeling much better, back to his normal crazy self! Maybe having the Panacur on hand and giving it to him right away did the trick? I will take him to the specialist anyway and see what she thinks.

Glad to hear some good news, Brie! Btw, what kind of Panacur dosing schedule has Doolin been on?

FWIW, after nuking the worms with Panacur, we gave a few doses of Drontal to go after any that had become insensitive to Panacur. Then we started monthly Interceptor. Because Spencer's case is more or less permanent and, relatedly, because hookworms hang out in cysts and hatch whenever, we periodically treat again with Drontal (like two or three times a year). Lately I realized that what look like IBD flares resolve right after he gets his Interceptor pill. When I told the internist about it, she said go ahead and give the Interceptor every three weeks instead of four (because three weeks after his last dose is usually when we see the problem reemerge).

Also fwiw, we used Advantage-Multi for a the first year after Panacur/Drontal nuking, and he still came back with a fecal positive for hookworm. So our experience suggests that while the monthlies help to control things, none of them can wipe out the problem. It's those darned cysts!

Those damned hooks are a bugger. We've been dosing Miley with Panacur every month, along with Lopatol every month (in two week intervals - Panacur, then Lopatol two weeks later, then Panacur two weeks later, and so on and so forth) for that past 3 months. It's been keeping those suckers at bay. My vet thinks it's overkill, but she's missed them 3 times, and I just would prefer $30 in deworming a month, vs. $3000+ of vet bills per month, plus all the added stress of having a sick pup.

Best wishes to Doolin! Hoping the dewormer has done the trick! Sending you happy, healthy vibes.
