Hoping For A Christmas Miracle

A little over three weeks ago, Avalanche had fluid in his abdomen and an ultrasound showed a mass on his liver with possible involvement of the spleen. All signs pointed to hemangiosarcoma which even with surgery gave little hope for much time with a quality of life so I brought him home.

Some may remember that I was given the option to start him on Amicar as a potential therapy so I check in with OSU to get their thoughts on this drug and use for bleeding tumors. They recommended I run a CBC to check platelet counts and for anemia. 10 days post his initial bleed, his blood work came back completely normal including his liver values. OSU really believes that if this was hemangio, there would be signs in his blood work. In addition, they haven't used Amicar therapuetically so while they were careful to not say, don't try it, they just verified dosing and emphasized they only use it post surgery.

Well, Ave's pretty much been symptom free for the last three weeks. I didn't start the Amicar but have it in case he shows signs of another bleed. He's been tossing stuffies, demanding dinner and doing little sprints in the yard. He does look a little barrel chested but I only just started taking him for walks again as I've been afraid of a collapse and not being able to get him home so he isn't getting the exercise he used to.

So we have a follow up ultrasound scheduled for the morning. How cool would it be if they didn't find anything? I know I have to remain realistic but tis the season to have a little hope and believe in miracles.

I don't want to give false hope, but Dell (12.5 yo greyhound) had this same type of fluid, except the ultrasound showed the tumor attached to an enlarged spleen. They did chest xrays and finding no lesions indicating cancer, we did do the surgery on Nov 10. The surgeon removed a 6 pound tumor, as well as the spleen. His liver was not affected, although they did take a biopsy of his liver during the surgery. The analysis of the tumor and spleen showed suspicious cells, but we caught it early and the tumor had not erupted or leaked. The surgery went really well - surgeon thought it would take 2 hours and it only took 1.

I was really hesitant about surgery, as Dell is 12.5, but with the lungs being clear, we opted to "roll the dice." Have you had chest xrays done?

If Dell's chest xrays had shown cancerous spots/lesions, we would not have continued with surgery.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! Lizmego, to answer your questions, yes he had lung x-rays and everything was clear. He also had a FNA done that came back inconclusive. My biggest concern was that it was primary to the liver and not just the spleen making it a much more involved surgery and the prognosis was so poor it was hard to ask him to go through it. In light of his current situation, however, I amy reconsider depending on what we see.

Thanks again everyone!

It can happen, Melissa. Loca was diagnosed with chrondrosarcoma a few years ago. Turned out the local radiologist misdiagnosed her. She was fine.
