Guest couchpotato
I know you all see this often here on the forum, I just need a place to vent where everybody understands... I just had to break the news to my wife who has been working all day... Received a preliminary diagnosis of OS in our eleven yr. old, sad and frustrating news. X-rays showed the signs on his upper leg bone. His lower leg is all swollen and we are just not ready to put down another hound so soon, but that really is the only choice we have. The doctor said there was really nothing we can do to reduce the swelling and that they would need to do a bone biopsy to be certain. If the biopsy showed cancer they the next recommended course of action would be amputation, chest x-rays were clean. He is now on Rimadyl and Tramadol Hydrochloride. We feel the worst is upon us, as these things tend deteriorate logarithmically... damit this sucks.

Greytlady94
I am so sorry. Have the x-rays been read by a specialist or only by your regular vet? The diagnosis should be able to be made with just the x-rays. As Batmom said, he is blessed that he doesn't know the future, only the here and now. Osteo is a very painful cancer and adequate pain meds are very much needed. Sending prayers for you and your boy. iluvgreys
Geez... I'm just heartbroken to hear your news. I've been through OS with three of my hounds, and experienced the lower leg swelling as the lymph system failed during the last stages of OS, when the microfractures started occuring higher up. That was the sign that it was time to say goodbye. My heart goes out to you and your family and my prayers are with you and your precious boy. Guest couchpotato
iluvgreys, That is what I am finding out, and it is killing me to discover these things. He just came out from the bedroom and was really sad and whining a bit. He hasn't been outside for hours, his lower leg is all swelled up, I am sad and cannot believe I am actually saying this but we'll be taking him in monday or Tuesday to cross the bridge. That will be both our hounds in a six month period, doesn't seem fair at all. Is there nothing to help the swelling?!?! queenwinniesmom
Oh, no, two dogs in 6 months! Yes, you do need to vent, and too many of us know how you're feeling. It's just not fair.
