  1. There have been a number of various threads on tick collars and tick prevention. I cannot find this answer in the threads or using Google. I need to add something to Rocket's monthly treatment that will cover ticks since we are now using Trifexis. I would like to use the Preventic Collar, but cannot find any mention of the one for dogs having a breakaway clasp. The one for cats is specifically marketed as a breakaway, but there is no mention of that for the dog product. Rocket will be boarded for a couple of weeks next month, and will spend idle time and overnight in a crate. I don't want a collar on him that isn't a breakaway. Can anyone advise if the Preventic is a breakaway? If not, is there one out there that is ?(not flea and tick, but tick only) Thanks.
  2. Looks a little bit like a spider bite, but it really could be anything. Might be worth sending the pics to your vet for an opinion.
  3. She'll probably want a refill in a while. Greyhounds seem to like their coffee. The biggest problem is the caffeine. In a dog the size of a greyhound, it would take a significant amount of caffeine to cause a problem. If she starts getting hyper, restless, or has any medical issues that are heart related, then I would call the vet to double check. One glass shouldn't be a problem unless it's an energy drink or contains some exorbitant amount of caffeine.
  4. Several people here have mentioned an Adams product (a spray or topical) that works well. I think they also make a tick collar that is pretty good. Might want to do some research on those products to see if anything they offer would help.
  5. I have to keep a Stainless Steel Dog Bowl in each car. Mr. Picky won't drink out of anything else, but will drink out of my hand if I offer it.
  6. Milk sales are way down nationwide - just another sales gimmick by the milk marketers.
  7. Most of the threads about Pet Insurance are found by searching on the name of the company or policy your are considering. The discussions are usually about the product itself, not whether or not it's worth it. Most people here who use it are are always glad they have it when there's a major expense.
  8. Anytime i go to the vet now, regardless of the reason, I pickup a week's supply of Flagyl to keep on hand. The first hint of diarrhea never occurs when the vet is open. i order the Evanger's from Wag.com . I think Petflow also carries it. The organic is about 2 bucks a can, but worth it to me since it works for us. Locally, Pet Supplies Plus carries it, but the supply there can be hit or miss, so sometimes they have the organic, other times it's the non-organic or the Chicken and Rice - I have used each of them at different times with success. I prefer the organic, it appears to have more meat, and doesn't smell as strong as the others.
  9. I've started using Evanger's Organic Canned Chicken in place of the cooked bland diet. Rocket seems to recover faster on it, and I have no trouble getting him to eat it. Usually 1/2 can 4 times a day until he can start back on a little kibble. Going by the instructions he should actually have 4 cans a day for his weight if I was feeding it normally, but spreading out 2 cans over 4 feedings has worked fine when he has tummy issues. Nothing in it but chicken and water, with a little organic guar gum as a thickener. It's also easier to just keep a case of that on hand so i don't have to cook a special diet just for him. Evanger's also has a non-organic Chicken and Rice canned food that they market specifically as a food for dogs with diarrhea or stomach problems. The can notes that it is for temporary use only, and is not intended for regular feeding. When i opened it, it smelled and looked about like the canned ID food from the vet, at 1/5 the price. I have used both foods successfully. Sounds like Bella might need some Flagyl as well. Feel better soon Bella!
  10. Just now saw this. Lots of good thoughts for Jimmie! Hope he's feeling better soon.
  11. I keep some cans of Evanger's Organic Chicken on hand for those times that kibble is refused. Have never had the canned food turned down, and we can usually re-start with kibble in a day or two if there's nothing major going on. The non-organic chicken or the chicken and rice is also a hit here, and both are little more stinky and enticing. There is nothing in the Organic Chicken except Chicken, Water, and a little bit of Guar Gum as a stabilizer. I also use it in place of cooking chicken when there's an upset tummy or Big D. It is not for long term feeding, but works when other foods aren't acceptable for whatever reason.
  12. Gave it to Rocket for the first time this month. He threw it up after about an hour. The vet says since it stayed in that long, it would still be effective, and that he may not throw it up again, but they often see that with the first dose. Waiting for Interceptor to start production and come back on the market. We will go back to interceptor as soon as it becomes available. Production lines have started back up for some of the related products using the same ingredients, so hopefully Interceptor will be available by the time we use the last of our Trifexis.
  13. Bill, I think you lost a couch! She's adorable!
  14. Wait til she starts opening the refrigerator and the cabinets........
  15. Something is irritating the tummy. Most likely another round of worms if you've been having that issue.
  16. I've seen posts here previously indicating that many greys love to eat hand lotion. I would remove any type of lotion that you have out of their reach as a precaution.
  17. Just wanted to add that given the length of time it has gone on, you might also ask the vet about some Metronidazole to help heal the tummy. We went through months of this with Rocket and may; just may be on the way to resolving it after many de-wormings, canned food instead of kibble, and several rounds of Metronidazole. Hope your pup if feeling better soon.
  18. I'm very sorry for the loss of your sweet girl. Run free Jessie.
  19. Don't take this the wrong way, it is not meant to be harsh, but rather something you should have been taught before adoption. This is the standard response every time this comes up, and it comes up often. Your daughter has no business on or near the dog's bed. She needs to be taught that the dog is off limits if laying on the bed, and that the dog's bed and crate is off limits 24/7. Otherwise, you are risking a major bite. Your hound has had it's own personal space in the form of a house or crate since it was 18 months old. Most likely, the hound was asleep even if it's eye were open. The hound's personal space is now the bed and maybe a crate if you are using one. Both are areas where the hound should not be disturbed. Your dog is not used to being touched or approached when asleep, and the growl was simply a warning that your daughter was invading the hound's space. Be glad that dog gave a warning growl. We have the sweetest greyhound in the world here, but he has bitten twice when touched while sleeping. Both times it was the human;s fault for startling him (I know, i was one of the recipients of those teeth). He still gives me a little growl in the middle of the night if I walk by his bed and startle him from a sound sleep. Your hound is still settling in and learning the rules, so it's a good time to start with NLIF (nothing in life is free) training. Search the site or Google it. We have a "no petting unless the dog is standing" rule. it might be wise to use that policy to teach your daughter. Others will chime in here regarding the other issues you listed, but this is the one I live with every day, and should have been explained in depth to you before the adoption. I have successfully adopted to homes with 2 and 3 year olds for our group, so the situation is very workable. It just requires some training on the part of everyone, as well as any house guests or other kids who come over to play. Welcome to GT. Don't let this overwhelm you. it's part of life with a Retired Racer.
  20. For us, the word "outside" covers #1 and #2. Everything else outside is a walk or a ride, so when we ask if Rocket needs to go outside, he usually goes to the garage door if he does.
