  1. Right now I have 2 dogs with this problem. Our new dog has been with us for 2 and a half months. He has been struggling with hookworms. It does include blood and explosive diarrhea. He is very uncomfortable when being treated and needs to go out many times. Our female grey is almost 10. She has bouts with pancreatitis. When she flares up, she is in a lot of pain and terrible diarrhea. I feed her a low fat diet. She eats Royal Canin Gastrointestinal food. It is pricey, but it helps her out. The 17 pound bag is $65.99 and the 28 pound bag is $89.99. It is worth it! It is very important to keep her away from human food. I also put a teaspoon of Beneful on their food each night which just adds fiber. Good luck! I know how frustrating this is and how hard it is to watch your pup be miserable. I felt really guilty about not knowing there was a reason Myrtle had such loose poops.
  2. Okay. Good things first. We brought home Wilson yesterday. He is very sweet. Now for the bad. He has hookworms. I am afraid that Myrtle will get them. She has not had her heartworm for a while because of her pancreatitis. I am going to get it for her on Monday. He paces and paces and paces. Myrtle was fine with him yesterday but is done with it this morning. We put up his crate and put him in it and he finally laid down. Any advice will be appreciated.
  3. Well, they adopted out the dog we thought we wanted. They told me the other people put their application in first. We really are going this Saturday. We will be bringing one of the boys home with us I hope! I will definitely post a picture if I get one of them. I hope I hope I hope! We have been taking Myrtle for rides every night because we have to go so far away to get our boy! We are letting her choose her buddy!
  4. They called me and told me that I get one of the hounds they got in last Saturday! I get my pick! Woo Hoo! They have 2 females and 2 males. I don't even care which it is. We are so excited! I am sort of worried how Myrtle will handle another hound in the house. She has been an only for almost 2 years. It was because of me that we didn't adopt sooner. Losing both of my boys in a 6 month span to that horrible killer, cancer, adding another hound when I was so broken up was not a good idea. After nursing Dawson for months with bone cancer made me reluctant to adopt another. Now, seeing how lonely she is and how empty our home is has changed my thoughts on the subject. I will post a picture when we get our new one. We hope to have our new addition by Saturday the 9th!
  5. I am excited! We decided as a family to look for another greyhound for several reasons. Myrtle has been eating strange stuff when she gets upset. She tries to make friends with cats! Our house seems very empty. She is very much my dog. My DH misses having one of the boys snuggle up with him. So, we have contacted a group in our area because our group is gone. I will let you know when I hear something back. I already talked to the people from the group. So . . . . I . . .can't . . .wait!
  6. Believe me, I thought they were up. I'm not sure where she has found them. I do not even put my socks in the laundry basket any more. I do not want to think about not having a greyhound in the house. We've had a hound since 2004! Their personalities are amazing! I would not put her health at risk. She sleeps with me every night and is very much my dog. I love her very much. I just wondered if anyone had ever heard of this!
  7. Myrtle has been the only dog for over a year. She tries to make friends with out neighbor's rat terrier who is very annoying. She has also tried to make friends with their cat as well. We have considered adopting another grey but our adoption group no longer. This is the weird thing she is doing. She eats my dirty socks and sometimes clean ones! The little ones you wear with Bobs or Toms. She doesn'tusually eat them unless they are dirty. She goes in my son's room and gets his dirty socks and licks them until they are soaked! She leaves my DH's socks alone. I am going to buy a hamper for my bedroom. Right now I keep my dirty socks on top of my dresser until I wash them. Sometimes she throws them up and other times she poops them out. I can't figure out why! Any ideas? We have had her for 7 years and she has never done this before. No one wants to adopt to us because they are all too far away. The closest one is an hour and a half away.
  8. I think it all depends on your dog. Some of our greys were home from day one. Others were quiet and aloof. Try to be relaxed and see how your dog reacts to you. I have only had 4 but each one was a bit different.

    River

I am so sorry for your loss. I loved to see all of your beautiful pictures of River. I wanted a fuzzy dog like River. My prayers are with you in this awful time!
  10. Oh my gosh, is that true or what! You are so right! They have that second sense that says my human really needs me right now. If my dogs could talk, they would tell a lot of my secrets. I'm really sorry you are going through tough stuff right now. Prayers for you! (Hope that's okay!)
  11. I have done this to quick run in to use the bathroom while traveling with my dogs. I wouldn't do it if I were shopping though. My A/C doesn't stay real cool while it is parked. It gets warmer. Maybe it is just my car.
  12. I am sorry you are going through this with your sweet boy. I will be praying for all of you! Our boy had osteosarcoma. It was awful to see our sweet boy in so much pain. We too used Gabapentin. We tried many different meds to help manage his pain. I pray you find that it is not that. We had our sweet boy for 4 months after diagnosis. Please let me know what you find out!
  13. She is doing really great on the new food! She is still on antibiotics for a couple of days. She seems much better. We are still giving her the treats we have but not nearly as many. I am so glad that she is doing better.
  14. Myrtle went in to get pre-dental blood work done. She has elevated liver levels, cholesterol, and low thyroid. They tell me she is having a problem with pancreatitis. She has always had problems with her stomach. They have put her on clavamox and another med. I am to change her food as well. I am getting her a low fat kibble. I feel awful not realizing she was sick!
  15. I agree that this seems like a fear reaction. If your boy is an alpha dog, he probably has always felt like he's in charge. Our first grey was a very tiny female with an enormous personality. She could really be a bi!@&! I am sure that was her personality on the track. If we told her no or that she was a bad girl in a stern voice, she would dip her butt. She thought we were going to hit her. We never, ever did, but I'm pretty sure she was on the track. She was the alpha dog even though she was the smallest in our pack. The other two were 20 - 30 pounds heavier than her! LOL It sounds to me that your boy is in about the same boat. You know not to approach him when he's naughty, so don't. We learned to stay away from her bed and to leave her alone when she was there. She was a very special hound whom I miss each and every day! She mellowed out so nicely. We got her a buddy who taught her how to be a pet and not an athlete any more! I understand your fears. Good Luck!
  16. We have a camper and bought it to take the hounds with us on vacation! LOL! We have had no problems except for one getting away from me. The alpha female whined at him and he came right back to me. Praise the Lord! We have gone to Florida with 3 hounds and the only trouble we had was a female pit bull who had recently had puppies was always loose and very grumpy. Also when we were getting ready to leave, my DH and DS took the camper to dump the black water and told me to walk the dogs there so they would potty before we left. Our alpha freaked out that our house on wheels was leaving without her and attempted to run greyhound fast with me flying along behind! After we caught up to them, she was fine!
  17. Myrtle has a lot of stomach issues. She goes on strike sometimes. This usually happens on Sunday for some reason. When it gets bad, I make her chicken and rice as Cleptogrey suggested. This works for my girl but I put plain yogurt in it too. This is what the vet suggested for her and it really works. She loves it too. Good Luck!
  18. She may have had a bad experience with men. If so, it may take some time for her to feel safe around men. My first hound was a bit like that. If you give her time, she will realize she is and relax. Good luck with Bella!
  19. Okay, lots of good questions. I have to take my hound for walks because I don't have a fenced in yard. We go for at least 4 walks a day. She is our only grey so we go for walks as long as she wants to walk. Some walks are only 10 minutes. Others are a half hour. They are not fragile dogs, but their skin tears easily. My dog will go up and down 3 to 4 stairs with no problem. She refuses to go down our basement stairs. We even tried to make them closed stairs but she still won't go down them. I personally don't like dog parks. It makes me nervous. I took my hounds once. We were the only ones there. When another big dog showed up, it started barking at mine. We left because based on the dog's body language, it was hostile toward mine. It wasn't worth it! Instead, we take them to the local baseball field. We clean up after them and it's much safer for the dogs. I don't know why you would think your dog should be muzzled for the OTHER dogs safety. Greyhounds are not usually aggressive. They just have thin skin. Only once was my dogs skin torn. It happened because they were running and one dog got excited and accidentally did it. He did have to have stitches but it healed great.
  20. Myrtle loves cat poop! I have to give her Drontal at least twice a year cause she ends up with worms from eating it! If you know of a way to get them to keep from eating it I would LOVE to know! LOL
  21. I live in northwest Ohio. I have had 4 greyhounds. Only 2 of them would wear a coat. I really wouldn't worry about letting him go outside without a coat.
  22. My sweet boy was diagnosed at age 12. He was gone in 4 months. I pray that isn't what is wrong with your pup!
