  1. I am so sorry! I have had to make that kind of decision too. It hurts a lot! I am so sorry you had to go through this!
  2. I am so sorry! I have been there. Osteosarcoma is awful! It takes our sweethearts so quickly. From diagnosis to death, we only had 4 months. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers! If you need to talk, send me a pm.
  3. Could you post a picture of your boy? How is he with other greyhounds?
  4. My thoughts and prayers are with you! I hope the second med helps!
  5. I am sorry to hear your old guy isn't doing well. I also had a grey who was 12 and had issues. Ultimately, we lost him to bone cancer. I hope that isn't what you are facing. Another of our greys had glaucoma and lost his eye. It was the best thing we ever did for him! Love him and spoil him for the time remaining. As to the prey drive, I have had 4 greys in 11 years. All 4 of them put up with small dogs as my mom had a Yorkie. They don't like the dog but neither do they hurt him. However, 2 of them are/were not cat safe. The other 2 were but none of them are outside!
  6. Just to make you feel better, when we got hound number 4 (Yes, you read that right!), she had broken her leg while racing. They tried to rehab her because she was a good racer. She was 20 months old when we got her. She was VERY active. While on a walk around 11P.M., she broke her leash and ran like the wind. She jumped a neighbor's fence to try to get their cats. Then she jumped their gate in front and skidded on her paws across their asphalt driveway. My DS found her about 15 minutes after she got away. All 4 paws were bloody and she wouldn't put weight on the broken leg. I was a mess. She hadn't re-broken anything but we had to keep her paws, all 4 of them, wrapped for a while. She is now on her leash with an extra piece of hardware. It screws on her leash. No more runaway houndie! It will be all right. Stay calm and your pup will too. I do think I would find a different vet.
  7. We have used red bag IAMS for years. The last bag was the culprit of Myrtle's bad D. We opened a new bag and no more big D.
  8. Well, the vet completely changed his meds. Now he gets a 100 mg capsule of Gabapentin once a day and one 100 mg tablet of Galliprant a day! He is still in pain. I thought they would just add something to what they had started. My hope had been that he would feel better but it didn't seem to work. I don't know what else to do. He is happy and he still tries to play. He eats good and is gaining weight. His eyes look good and not like he's miserable. I don't want to put him to sleep when he is doing so good! He still had a good quality of life. He lets me rub his bad leg. He doesn't cry or whimper when I rub it. I am truly confused!
  9. Well, Dawson was diagnosed with bone cancer. He is about 12 years old. We have been managing his pain with Tramadol and Rimadyl but they do not seem to be doing the job like they did at first. I read on line that you can add Gabapentin. Do any of you know anything about this? I am not ready to say goodbye to my sweet boy who never hurt anyone. Any advice would be appreciated. I see the writing on the wall but I want as much quality time as I can get first! Thanks!
  10. This is what I have been doing. He gets a Tramadol and Rimadyl at breakfast and at bedtime. I give him a tramadol after the afternoon walk. I also have to give him his antibiotics after supper. This is all I have been told to do. He has slept and lay down since his breakfast meds. It is really swollen so I tried to put an ice pack on it but he would have nothing to do with that. I gave him chicken in the night so I could give him a Tramadol. He ate it all. I have also been giving him milk as he isn't drinking much. I don't want his kidneys to be damaged! Oh, they said they did 2 biopsy's of his leg. I slept in the living room with him last night. I slept on the floor with him Monday after they took his x-rays. Thank you so much for the encouragement. I am emotionally spent.
  11. Thanks everyone. He is very aware tonight and in a lot of pain. I have given him a Tramadol. How long should I wait to give him something else? I have Rimadyl but they told me to hold off on that until morning. I don't see any sleep in his future or mine. He's had surgeries before but I don't remember him being in this much pain. I guess it's because of going into the bone?
  12. On Monday, we took Dawson to the vet. They took x-rays and told us they thought he had cancer. They showed us the films from last October and the one they took that day. There was a dark shadow. They gave us pain meds and told us we could put him down, keep him comfortable, or do a bone biopsy. We did the bone biopsy! I took him in today and picked him up around 5pm. The vet told me that they think he's the one in a million that it isn't cancer! The bone was nice and firm and not soft. They think it is a bone cyst. Now, I realize we won't know for sure until we get the results, but at least we have HOPE! It has been a very solemn, teary-eyed week. He is the sweetest, kindest dog I have ever had. He wouldn't hurt anything, except maybe a cat! He loves children and lets our neighbor boy kiss on him and hug him, he's only 3.
  13. I walked them around 4pm. He peed right away. I asked him if he wanted to go in but he took off walking around our house. My DH took our female on ahead of us so she could go. We had only just made it to the back when they came back. He turned around and came back in. He has not eaten anything today. I gave him a small bowl of milk which he did drink. I know some people say it isn't good for them but he LOVES milk, almost as much as peanut butter. I am going to try to give him some of that if he doesn't eat his supper.
  14. The vets office is the one that told me to give him a 325mg Aspirin instead of the pain med! He is a big boy at 85 pounds, and very gentle and sweet. I inspected his foot and I didn't see anything. I manipulated his toes, foot, ankle, and shoulder. I gave him a massage on that side and he didn't give me the GSOD, and he is prone to do that when hurt. I really have no idea what is wrong with him. I had him for xrays on that same leg a year ago because he was limping on it. They told me it was probably a muscle strain and gave me Tramadol after the xrays. Thank you for your responses! I am scared, and telling you about it has somehow made me feel better!
  15. Well, my drama king is holding his left front paw again! He was fine yesterday until after the supper walk. He was limping, but not too bad. This morning it is awful. Last night at about midnight I gave him a 325 mg aspirin. He is in a lot of pain this morning. Is there anything I can give him for the pain? Should I give him a Benedryl to help him relax and sleep? I cannot afford to take him to the e-vet . I will get him in to the vet tomorrow but I need to know how to make him comfortable until then. I suspect he has been stung by a bee. I sure hope that is it. There are a lot of bees around lately. Please give me some advice. I am terrified it is the c word! We just lost Ziggy 2 months ago yesterday!
  16. My girl is frightened very easily. She is a very big girl, but she hides behind me frequently. If she smells something distressing, she will try to either take us home, or hide behind me. My guess is that she might have smelled or seen something that scared her. Myrtle is very afraid of coyotes and even though I am just out of town, we have had a pack in the woods. She took us through our neighbor's yard to our driveway. I always knew when they were there. She may be telling you she is afraid of something. Trust her. Is she afraid in the daylight too? Give her some time.
  17. I saw her name and felt so sad! We both lost our 14 year old beloved hounds! I am so sorry and my thoughts and prayers are with you!
  18. I am so sorry you lost your little girl! We can't ever have them long enough. They worm into our hearts and create such joy!
