  1. My girl finished her 3rd vaccine infusion 3 weeks ago. Healthy Paws covered it as they have all her other medical bills. Smartest investment I've ever made.

Oh God, Pam, that's horrific. I'm so so sorry. Thank God Pitu is ok.

Crap, I'm so sorry, Pam. How are you and Pitu doing?
  4. I have honestly never felt guilty about having her leg amputated, I may have felt differently if it hadn't gone well, but even after she was hospitalized for a week the day after she had her stitches out, I didn't feel guilty. Bowie has been happy since I brought her home from being at the hospital. I think I would have felt guilty if I hadn't amputated it and not given her every chance to live. She's 14 months 26 days post amputation today! Bowie is now 11, our walks are pretty short, about 1/3 of a mile, but we walk up and down a very steep hill for our walks (hilly neighborhood), so that gives her more of a work out than if it were all flat. Sometimes she doesn't want to go, so that's ok, but I confess, it always freaks me out a little bit. When we walk, I use a collar, we make plenty of stops so she can take in the pee mail and rest a bit. If I recall correctly, after the stitches came out, most of her pain was gone, well, after the infection was gone.
  5. Please add Gryphon He joins his human dad and his good friend Doodles on the other side.
  6. Pancreatitis typically comes up when the fats in question are cooked, not when they are raw.
  7. Many vets, even oncologists, don't know much about ketogenic diet so for dogs with cancer. I think I'll make another appointment with Dr. Alice Villalobos, she has experience with greyhounds with osteo as well as experience with ketogenic diets, I doubt Dr. Couto has a lot of experience with the Keto diet, I've never heard him speak of it or write about it, thus far. I saw Dr. V last year for a second opinion on supplements and treatment after chemo ended, she was fantastic. She was interviewed in the Cancer in Dogs series, much to my surprise. I'm going to switch Bowie soon. I have a friend who is putting her greys on a ketogenic maintenance diet to try and prevent cancer and on the anti-cancer diet for her foster who we think had cancer in his toe (which was amputated, waiting on pathology report).
  8. I haven't had a lot of luck with any of the recommended harnesses for front leg amputatees. I bought the RuffWear harness, a K-9 Julius harness and tried Doodles Help'em Up harness, all to no avail. They all seem to slide around and down Bowie's chest. The Ruffwear seems the most secure, but it's way too much fabric when it's warm outside, especially since Bowie's body normally runs hot. I just use a martingale collar with her leash for walks. I keep the Ruffwear harness and the Help'em Up harness in case of emergencies. I sold the K-9 Julius harness to a friend with a young super furry Husky. There is a harness maker in England that makes what looks like a really solid harness that seems to have very little slippage for front leg amputees, but I haven't really seen the need for it. Her FB page is One Stop Harness Shop.
  9. I had no luck with the Springtime product. I asked people in the racing business what they recommended and was told by many, Next Level Joint Fluid. I tried it and the results were incredible. Within 2 weeks Doodles was running around effortlessly, was bright and happy. I kept her on it for the rest of her life.
  10. There are studies showing that it pretty effectively starves cancer cells. Check out https://www.ketopetsanctuary.com I asked Bowie's oncologist about it and he said he was positive about it. I've read all sorts of good things about it with other dogs, but don't know if any greyhounds on it. It's a low carb, low protein, high fat raw diet.
  11. Has anyone had their greyhound on a ketogenic diet for health reasons or know of anyone who has? I'm seriously considering putting Bowie on a ketogenic diet now that she has completed her final round of the osteo vaccine.
  12. Thanks! I did switch to Flickr, but can't seem to get GT to let me post it! Clearly, it's operator error!
  13. Bowie is 14 months post diagnosis today. Happy as a clam, roaching, running. Each day is a blessing. I wish I could post her picture here, but Photobucket is no bueno.
  14. Geez Louise, I hate autocorrect. I got the name of a dermatologist veterinarian in Pasadena from another Greyhound owner. He is supposed to be really great. I'll call on Monday. In the mean time, the oral meds and sulfur dip seem to be really helping.
  15. I got the make of a dermatologist vet in Pasadena from another Greyhound owner. He is supposed to be really great. I'll call on Monday. In the mean time, the oralmeds and sulfur dip seem to be really helping. ETA: Bowie is undergoing a special treatment for osteo (I can't talk about it, but likely you can figure out what I'm trying not to say) and there was a telemedicine derm consult by her oncologist and a dermatologist at the time of her last "treatment". This was going on before she started the treatments, but neither I nor the oncologist realized it. We thought the boo-boo on her hip was from hitting a bush as she ran past it in the yard. At her second visit is when realized it was getting worse, hence the dermatologist consult.
  16. The weird thing is that it isn't bothering her, she's not itchy, unlike me. I am using the old "wrassler's" cure on mine (diluted bleach) which has already cleared up 2 spots. I'm waiting to hear back from my vet about taking her to a dermatologist. Though the oncologist is the one who did the dermatologist consult and got put her on the itraconazole and the sulfur dip. My vet had a bottle of the sulfur dip in her office. This is complicated because I am taking her out of state for treatments with this particular oncologist. Oy.
  17. OMG, I'm going nuts. About 6 weeks ago Bowie had a little patch on her hip, I mistakenly thought it was a boo boo. Well, she developed more spots. My vet got what looked like a great skin fur sample and sent it off. She has been on compounded oral meds (for a week and 3 days) for the "ringworm" and I'm giving her Lyme sulfur dips 2x a week. I'm also doing tons of laundry to keep her beds clean and vacuuming. Well, after 3 weeks of incubating the ringworm test comes back negative. Now what? My vet, who I've been corresponding with via email, said to keep up the Lyme sulfur dips. I'm also keeping her on the oral medication. She said she doesn't think it's a staph infection as it isn't presenting that way. To add to this mystery, I have it, too, but not badly enough for me to go to the doctor. Is it possible for the test to be negative and it still be ringworm? I'm soooooo sick of this already, I know it takes a lot of time to get rid of it, but I'd like to see some progress. And, to top it all off, I've come down with one nasty cold, so I'm cranky, too!
  18. And mine, as was Tanzi, when Bowie was diagnosed. ❤️
  19. HempRx Forte has 1800mg per bottle, meaning there are 1800 drops per bottle, each drop is 1mg. I took Bowie for a consultation with Dr. Alice Villalobos (pretty well known oncologist) and she is the one who strongly recommended it. Innovet's strongest CBD only has .54mg per drop. So, the HempRX Forte is stronger and, ultimately cheaper than the strongest Innovet CBD oil as their bottles are 1oz and HempRx Forte is 2oz. It appears that Innovet will be coming out with a 2000mg version, but it isn't on the market yet. Depending on price, I may switch back to them. I buy the HempRx Forte (not just the HempRx) from PetsTruly.com as they seem to have the best price. Where are you in California? I'm in the LA area.
  20. Both of Bowie's oncologists recommended it. The one highly recommended was HempRx Forte made by Rx Vitamins for Pets. It's expensive, but it's very strong and in a large bottle. Bowie is only getting 12 drops per day. We were using the CBD from Innovet, but when I proceed it out this was about the same price, but stronger.
  21. Here is info on the osteosarcoma vaccine by Aratana from the Tripawds blog just posted today. They interviewed one of the veterinary oncologists whose site is participating in the trial. They also give contact information for some of the sites across the country and Aratana's contact number to find a trial site near you. http://tripawds.com/2018/03/21/canine-osteosarcoma-vaccine-facts/
  22. I was incredulous when they told me that. They had denied the claim for Carl's meds, so I called them and that is exactly what they did. Insane in the membrane! I don't think they are in business anymore. No wonder! I learned the hard way, when I looked into Trupanion and Healthy Paws I made sure to ask about that!
