  1. One very important thing to check on Pets Best - if a condition is diagnosed in this plan year, when the plan renews next year will that condition then be considered a pre-existing condition in the new plan year? Pets First did that. Carl was diagnosed as hypothyroid and they paid for his diagnosis and treatment. When his plan renewed the next year they excluded anything to do with his hypothyroid diagnosis (his meds and annual blood work for example). That really pissed me off, so I switched to Trupanion, who raised my rates by 30+% before the second policy year rolled around (I hadn't even made any claims in the time I had them). So, I switched to Healthy Paws and have been with them ever since, probably for 7+ years now. HP does not excluded a condition diagnosed while they were covered by them in prior policy years. And, HP will pay for Bowie's treatment with the new osteo vaccine.
  2. Not to give false hope, but sometimes lumps are benign. One of my dogs (not-grey) had a very hard marble sized lump on her neck. I was sure it was cancer. It wasn't, we left it alone and she lived her days with it. She lived to be 15 and passed from old age. Carl, my first greyhound, had some lumps and bumps, too.
  3. Hoping for a good report. How long will it take to get the pathology report?
  4. Sending you good thoughts. I hope it's just a bug bite or something really simple like that. Is she limping?
  5. Carl had something that looked like that. The vet had me give him 2 30cc Thuja pellets and they were gone within a few weeks and never returned. You can buy Thuja at a health food to store or on Amazon.

  7. Vaccine update: Bowie's appointment has been pushed back to March 1 & 2. There was a death in the family of someone involved in the shipping of the vaccine. Clinics may have a delay in receiving it this week, so the clinic where I'm taking Bowie pushed back everyone to next week. Now I have another week and a half to stew over it.
  8. Vet appointment, labs, physical exam Thursday at 3. If all is clear and I don't get completely scared off by the consent process, she will go back in early Friday morning. If she has side effects, they will keep her over night, if not, I'll pick her up and we'll spend the rest of the weekend at Ed's.
  9. I am so sorry to read this, my heart goes out to you. I'm glad the vet contacted you right away and corrected the dosage of pain meds so she can at least be comfortable.
  10. We're going to Las Vegas at the end of the week, of all goes well, she will be in the first group there to receive the vaccine on Friday.
  11. How exciting! Please post an update and let us know how it goes. The clinic doing the trial where Bowie is going to get the vaccine had their training by Aratana today. They have been doing other phases of the same vaccine. The vet said that they like to keep the dogs for 24 hours post intention as they can develop flu-like symptoms. They are supposed to contact me when they are going to start. The vet said there was a problem with the wording of the label, so the USDA was making Aratana change it. It's supposed to be about $1,000 per dose, so $3,000 for all 3. I'm hoping she will be getting it next week.
  12. So the vaccine is likely going to cost $1,000 per dose. They get 3 doses. I called Healthy Paws on Monday and asked if they would cover it. It's so new, no one knew, so they had to kick it up to another department. They also didn't know, but said they would get back to me in an email. I was really concerned they wouldn't cover it because it's a "vaccine", but not in the same sense as traditional vaccines. They sent me an email today and told me that, yes, they will cover it. I wept. I'm tearing up just writing this. She is so close....
  13. February 8 2018, Bella Run Softly aka Bowie aka Softy aka Mama, she is 365 days post amputation and osteo diagnosis. 10 years 9 months old. Such an incredible life force, I love her to pieces.
  14. Her abdomen. I thought it seemed excessive, that's why I wanted to find out what other oncologists do. She had osteo in her right proximal humerus and that was all amputated.
  15. Question about restaging quarterly. Does your vet always do an ultrasound in addition to blood work, a physical exam and x-rays?
  16. Bowie's restaging bills are usually close to $500, that's a chunk of change for me to be waiting on.
  17. Interesting, after sent them an inquiry as to why it was taking so long to process my claim (today, about 2 hours ago) they sent me an email telling me it was approved. I didn't know they worked on Sundays. Coincidence?
  18. I submitted Bowie's last claim the same day as her appointment, 1.5.18, I received a notification from them that they received it an it was in process...today is 1.21.18, nothing from them since then. No bueno. It's not like what I submitted was out of the ordinary, it was for her restaging, so a physical exam, blood work and xrays. Pretty straightforward stuff. I noticed they were slowing down in the summer, I asked them about it and was told (as I think you posted around that time) that there were a lot of claims over the summer. Well, we're about as far from summer as we could be right now. I just sent them an email asking if there is a problem. We shall see... As for the Trupanion, I believe they collect the owner's portion (office visit) at the time of service. I'll ask my friend how it works and post her answer.
  19. My friend does, she was talking about this the other day, it's a great benefit. I believe your vet has to sign up for the service. I hope Healthy Paws adopts it, too, but they'll need to pay faster. They have really slowed down with their reimbursements, it used to take about 10 days. After I signed up for direct deposit it takes 3+ weeks. I think I'm going back to receiving a check.
  20. My friend has a greyhound with pemphigis, she has been able to keep him off the strong meds with the help of our homeopathic vet. It's still processing, but not rapidly. Here is what she said: "We do: niacinamide (500 mg, 3 times a day), fish oil (once per day), vitamin B complex (200 mg), vitamin c (1000 mg), vitamin e (400 mg), and phosphorous (normal homeopathy dose - 4ish of the larger pellets). We also feed both of them cottage cheese with each meal, and one sardine at dinner. Who knows what in that mess helps, but it is not steroids or antibiotics! Oh, and K9 immunity and turkey tail (1 tsp per day)! Good luck to your friend (on Greytalk)- it is a maddening thing to manage!" I will add my .02¢ to this about the last two supplements. For what it's worth, I switched Bowie from K9 Immunity Plus to 4Life's Transfactor K9 Complete, I couldn't get a real bead on what was in the K9 Immunity Plus and it really bothered me. I have a lot better idea of ingredients with this one and it has at least most of what is in the other. As for the turkey tail, I used the powder until I realized there is a lot of rice powder in it. The mushroom is grown in rice, hence the rice base. I switched Bowie to Metagenics Mycotaki, which is all fruit of the mushroom, no rice. The 4Life is cheaper than the K9, but the Mycotaki is more $ than the turkey tail powder. I found a place in Long Beach that sells the Mycotaki, it's the cheapest I've found, beats Amazon's price. I'd rather pay a mom and pop place than Jeff Bezos! I hope this may help your boy.
