  1. No, in my opinion they offer the best coverage for the price - so far.
  2. Here is the correspondence about the discrepancy in quotes (as a new client my quote was $40+, as an existing customer my quote for the exact same dog, same address, same everything was $59+), below is the email I received. I responded in the affirmative, took Barney in for a physical, have yet to hear back from them: "After some research I learned that there is a new pricing program for premiums available in your state. For most people, this new program would make premiums higher for them. However in your case, it looks like we could get you a much better rate for your kiddos by moving your account to the new program. I got a quote for Barney for a $500 annual deductible and 90% reimbursement at $40.42 on this new program. Screenshot attached. (I used 9/1/2014 as his birthday, even though the screen says age 3) I would more than happy to go ahead and add Barney to your policy, or go over any other questions you may have. Please let me know how you would like to proceed. Have a great day!" This is the response (which says a lot of nothing) when I asked about the 37% rate increase: "Thank you so much for choosing Healthy Paws Pet Insurance to protect your furry loved ones! Our records show Bowie was enrolled on 6/24/2014, you received an email with the date 11/5/2011 because that is when your policy itself was created for your previous furry friends. We understand that premium increases can be a stress financially. Our goal is to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. Your monthly bill is going up because, during the past few years there was an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians (most of which can range anywhere from $3,000-$14,000). These rate increases ensure that we can continue to provide nose-to-tail coverage for the life of your pet. This premium adjustment allows you and Bowie continued access to the best veterinarian care. That’s why our pet parents who have benefitted from the Healthy Paws plan continue to rate us the #1 pet health insurance provider."
  3. I got a response that was pointless, then a strange interaction with getting a quote for a new dog as an existing client and as a new clieny, $40 vs $59, I called them on it, asked why am I being penalized for being an existing client all information about the dog was exactly the same and they offered me the $40 rate.
  4. I am so very sorry, my heart goes out to you. Please know this is a lesson that I, and I am certain many others, will take to heart.
  5. Her osteo vaccine oncologist and I have been going back and forth. His thoughts are: do CT scan to determine if there are more we can't see (he doesn't think there are), radiation (but he thinks that is a long shot), he thinks that the vaccine may stop their growth eventually. If it doesn't, he is thinking chemo, but I don't think he really wants to do systemic chemo. His experience with electrochemotherapy (which they do at his hospital) leaves him feeling unimpressed. He has been in touch with the people from the study, too, they feel tradition is a long shot as well. He really wants to target just the nodules, not do anything to interfere with the vaccine. She's off the study now, so that isn't a complication factor.
  6. They are a rare form of osteosarcoma metastasis. There was an FNA, it's osteo. Clear lungs, but now these stupid soft tissue mets. It's also called extraskeletal osteosarcoma. Evil cancer.
  7. Does anyone here have experience with soft tissue osteo? The vaccine has kept Bowie's lungs clear, but she has two nodules. They were actually shrinking (she was on Doxy for a skin condition and Rimadyl for anti-cancer properties) until the vet at the center where she gets her vaccine (not her regular oncologist there) had me take her off of both of them. We had kept her on the Doxy after her skin condition cleared up because of its anti metastatic properties, but the vet was concerned about her blood work and urine indicating she may be developing kidney problems. After she came off of both of those the nodules have doubled in size. ARGHHHH... Well, she had a booster of the vaccine last week and her blood work was good. so her regular oncologist at the site put her back on both starting today, though at 50mg of Rimadyl instead of 100mg per day. We were looking at electrochemotherapy to reduce the nodules, but I've heard conflicting outcomes with it. Her vaccine oncologist was thinking focused radiation on them. He was supposed to be researching over the weekend, but I haven't heard back from him yet. He was hesitant to put her on something systemic because the vaccine really seems to be holding the lung mets at bay. In the meantime, Bowie has no idea any of this is going on and she is as happy as a clam. Running round, playing, bright eyes, big smile, and sleeping on her back. God, I love this girl
  8. I only have Bowie now, Doodles passed a year and a half ago, so it's only her rate.
  9. I reread their email to me. They said that Bowie had been covered since November 2011 and that this was the annual increase. Except I didn't have Bowie then, shewas on a farm pregnant with puppies somewhere in Kansas and I was living in my home with Carl and Doodles. So I went onto the pwners dashboard and sure enough, Bowie wasn't covered until the day I adopted her, June 24, 2014. So, I told them that and sent them a screenshot of it. I signed up Carl and Doodles in November 2011, but not Bowie. I also told them that a 37% increase isn't a "small" increase as they say is to be expected be in their FAQ page. I also sent them a link to a story that NBC put out about pet insurance TODAY, that discusses HP doesn't increase your deductible because of your dog's age or because you've made claims. It will be fascinating to see what they have to say.
  10. I know, right?! Did I read on a thread here that they were bought out by a less than savory company?
  11. I intend to call this week. It's absurdly high. I posted to see if it had happened to anyone else, thus far it hasn't. Bowie's annual review was in June, so it's not tied to that. If no one else gets a massive increase like this, despite what they say, it's pretty much specific to her claims. No one that I know of in the LA area has had a jump like this. I posted on FB and in my local group. No one has seen an increase like this.
  12. Someone suggested I put the $89.02 in a pet savings account for medical stuff. Well, that won't work for me because $89.02 per month x 12 months = $1,068.02 per year. A single incident can cost $10,000. It would take almost 10 years to save up for a $10,000 incident, 20 years for a $20,000. Bowie's pre amputation x-rays, pre amputation bone scan, pre amputation blood work, amputation, 2 multi day hospitalizations, chemo therapy, continued x-rays, and osteo sarcoma vaccination infusions (which include x-rays, overnight stays for each infusion, blood work, other iv medications) in the last 20 months have cost right around $20,000. That and you're lucky to have them with you for 10 years, let alone 20 years, which is not going to happen.
  13. "Your Healthy Paws policy provides ongoing access to the best veterinary treatments available, reimbursements based on the actual vet bill, and unlimited lifetime benefits. To continue to offer these great benefits, your monthly premium will increase for the policy period beginning in 60 days as shown below. Your rates never increase for filing a claim."
  14. That's what I'm accustomed to. What is your zip code? I have heard that, I'd love to hear from others who have had it happen.
  15. If you have Healthy Paws, hold on to your hats, there may well be a massive rate increase in your near future. I received an email today and was hit with a 37% increase on Bowie's insurance, Healthy Paws. This is exactly why I dropped Trupanion, they did this to me after the first 9 months with them for Carl and Doodles and I hadn't even had a claim with them. Clearly, I have had claims for Bowie. If others here have Healthy Paws, have you heard from them yet? I'm going from $64.82 per month to $89.06. No bueno. #healthypaws
  16. Sadly, please add Cabo. He died unexpectedly this morning, he was only 6. His family had only had him for one year. So heartbreaking.
  17. You probably got it from Marci who sells it for GreySave. You may want to contact her and see if she can send some to you. If you're in the LA area, GreySave is having a homecoming this Saturday and Marci usually comes. You could probably arrange to buy some from her if you get a hold of her before Sat. It was in small nugget form, correct? Alternatively, Best Bully Sticks also sells dehydrated lamb lungs, but they call them Lamb Puffs. I order that when I run out of the doggy crack between events. It comes in much larger pieces that you can break up. https://www.bestbullysticks.com/lamb-puff-dog-treats
  18. I used it for my boy, Carl, when he had terrible SA. It takes a while to get up to therapeutic level in the blood stream, but it really worked for him. He had zero side effects, personality remained the same, not dopey or drowsy. Carl weighed 72lbs, but I can't remember his dosage. He was on the human version because Clomicalm had just come out and was $$$, the human version was pennies on the dollar. I think I only had him on it maybe 6 months, I wish I'd left him on it about a year to really root his new and greatly improved coping skills. It doesn't work for all dogs, but there are other ones that will likely work. What do you need it for?
  19. I drove Bowie to Las Vegas last night after work, she had an appointment for a booster shot of the vaccine. I dropped her off this morning and just got off the phone with the vet. Shoulder nodule has shrunk slightly (!), abdominal one is the same, a small second abdominal one has come up (though I felt it was there before in May), suspicious spot in lung they found in April hasn't changed, there was a spot on her lung near the front of her chest last time (I just heard about this one today) that they thought may have been a blood vessel close to a bone that is still there and unchanged. They can't say the spots in her lungs are mets, just that they are suspicious and watching them. Blood levels are good, but kidney levels are top end of normal, so we're going to dc the Rimadyl for now. They are very pleased with how she's doing!!!
  20. Mine go back to Kitty and Hecuba. Pilot for all my dogs
  21. First of all, welcome and congratulations! I use a Seresto collar on Bowie. Works really well. Seems pricey, but lasts for a long time. I think it's supposed to last 8 months, I've read differing experiences by users. No complaints here. I like it because Bowie's oncologist thought it was the best thing for her, she wore it throughout her chemo last summer without a problem. If she had had a problem I could just pull it off of her.
  22. OMG, I saw Bowie today from work on the nanny cam. Came home and her bed was all twisted up. I wanted to see the video of her doing it....well let me tell you, little Miss Thing didn't just dig it up with her front paw this time, SHE GRABBED IT WITH HER MOUTH and pulled on it! She's 11 years old, not 11 months!!! 🤣🤣🤣
  23. Bowie has osteo, has Wigwam Wag and HB's Commander on her dame's side as well as Molotov. Carl and Doodles didn't have any of them. Doo passed from old age, Carl from what we believe was - not cancer. Thogh they were both Dominator pups abd I've yet to learn what caused him to die at 10 years old.
  24. I don't know how you feel about it, but you might want to consider feeding raw. I've fed raw for almost 10 years, but my friend (she was my raw mentor) has fed raw for 40 years. Not one of her dogs had ever had heart disease.
