Flushing Out Male Hoohoo Odor

Recommended Posts

Our boy, Marvin, continues to have an awful odor coming from his penis region, on and off, over the past couple of months. He's been to the vet for a full inspection and urinalysis twice, with two different vets finding absolutely no infection or even irritation. There's no discharge to note (definitely nothing with any color or appreciable amount), though you can tell right away if you get something on your clothes or blanket. The smell is killing us, and it can't be good for Marvin either. We'd almost prefer it be the anal gland smell at this point, as that's less overpowering and the solution is obvious. Our vets have recommended we try flushing out his sheath with warm water and a bit of peroxide over the next few days to see if there is an improvement before we bring him back in for a 3rd look.

Does anyone have any experience with the flushing, or any tips to share? This will forever be in my youtube search history, and our vets have been a good help with the procedure, but I thought I would check here before going all up in there...

I haven't flushed but I have "soaked" and wiped. Put epsom salts in some warm water, either try to put it in a really shallow dish and hold it up there while the dog is standing, just so the water kinda covers the end.....you might be waiting for 5 mins so have a seat on the floor. I made sure I squeezed the end and took a good look during the soaking to make sure there wasn't anything in there that shouldn't be, even dirt. I did this twice a day. I found this "soak" worked better than simply soaking a washcloth in the same epsom salt bath and just wiping. I did this when there was a little than normal discharge but no infection/irriation/smell. Perhaps it'll work.

Thanks! We will give it a try, as the wiping hasn't been overly effective.

This will forever be in my youtube search history,

At least it's only YouTube. Be glad that it wasn't Amazon. :bgeorge

Seriously though, is he licking much? Could it just be from saliva / wet skin and fur from the area not drying completely? Just a thought.

Flushing is relatively easy. Get a syringe from your vet (probably something in the 12-30 ml size range), fill it with warm water, stick the tip into the sheath and gently pinch the opening closed with your other hand. Then push the plunger on the syringe. Keeping the opening pinched off will prevent the water from just trickling right back out (especially if you're doing this with the dog standing and gravity is seriously working against you) and will help it get all the way up and not just around the entrance.

Rinse and repeat. Literally.

We used to rinse Fuzzy's penis weekly. He was prone to getting infections and one the specialists we took him to recommended the flushing as opposed to keeping him on antibiotics indefinitely. After the first couple of times it became easy and Fuzzy was a good dog.

Get a syringe from your vet, or we even got one from the pharmacy at the supermarket. It should have a wide tip and snip the end if it is pointy. We filed with warm water only. Insert the tip just enough to be able to release the syringe. We flushed three times usually. Initially the water coming back out was cloudy and we would rinse until it was clear. The whole thing only took 5 minutes. Good luck. You can do it!

Amazon would have been way worse! He doesn't lick much, though it does seem to be a bit more than usual. He takes after Rocket in the nap department, so I think whatever is causing the smell is compounded by the area not getting much ventilation. I worked from home today, and when he roached next to me, it was like I ran into a wall of gross...

Marvin will stay standing and be a good sport. He doesn't seem to mind the process. The worst part is having to put beach towels down, as there is zero chance of him going in the bathroom without being carried (he's not a fan of baths).

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions! This board is awesome!

Oops. I forgot to add about putting a towel down. We used to do the flushing in the garage over a large beach towel.

At one time my boy had so much cheese up there that it started obstructing his urine flow and it was dribbling out when he was just lying in bed. I thought he had an infection so I took him to the vet. When she flushed him, all kinds of chunks came out and the smell was absolutely horrendous!!! much worse than anal glands! Now I do it at home when needed. Grossest smell EVER!!!!

That's why we think Fuzzy was so compliant.
