Cooper Has Osteo

I brought Cooper in for his vaccinations at the begining of October. He was also limping, but also had a cracked nail, so I assumed that was the problem. This past weekend, he stopped using his front left leg and would just let it hang and not stand on it. He went to the vet Monday. His shoulder was swollen so the vet took an xray. In his shoulder, you can see the black spots where the cancer is, He is going in Friday morning to get more xrays to see if it has spread and what the next step would be. I am thankful that one of the vets there worked under Dr, Couto so she knows a lot about greyhounds and cancer. She will be consulting along with my regular vet. Cooper just turned 6 in August and never raced. My son Christian just loves Cooper! I am hoping they will have lots of time together.

He is currently on Tramadol although it is tough trying to get him to take it! He ate it with PB but not anymore. We are trying other foods to hide it in, but he eats around them all. I really don't want to freak him out by putting it down his throat as he is a spook and did bit once in his former home out of fear. The vet said we can try Metacam if he freaks out too bad.

Tramadol tastes really nasty and once they get a taste of it it's very hard to camouflage. I found the best was to just buy the pill pockets and make sure to drop the tablets in without touching the outside of the pill pocket or they will be able to sniff it out . Then pinch it closed using the other hand that didn't touch the pill. I also would have a little piece of lunch meat to give them immediately after so they will just gobble the pill pocket without chewing it. I went through this for 2 yrs with an elderly dog in renal failure and arthritis.

Norm is getting sneaky about is tramadol. We even tried tucking them in mini hotdogs but he caught on. We're back to peanut butter but this time I'm letting him take it right from my finger. I make sure the tramadol is well covered and I think because only good things come "from my hands" (cookies, pizza bones, cheese, etc) he doesn't even think there may be something nasty in there.

I'm sorry about Cooper. Like I said before....just sh!t.

Thanks everyone. The hard part is Cooper will not take anything from my hand. I have had him 3 years, but he is a spook and still unsure of certain things. I'll have to try the pill pockets and see if that works.

I'm so sorry to hear this about Cooper. I hope you get as much quality time as possible with him, he's just too young. :grouphug

Seamus is not food motivated and sometimes won't take his rx. I cover his pill in peanut butter, dab the thing onto his wrist, and he's happy to lick it off.

I'm so sorry. He so very young.

The homemade pill pockets referred to in a recent thread (Pill Pockets) worked better here than the commercial ones when I had to give everyone antibiotics for three weeks.

I am so sorry. My Trooper had his back leg amputated 2 weeks ago tomorrow because of Osteo. It seems like someone gets that dreaded news every day. It just makes me sick.

It was funny reading all those comments about having to sneak the Tramadol down. I've had no problems with Trooper. I use peanut butter or cheese. We get to start weaning him off over the next week or so.

I am so sorry about Cooper's diagnosis and at such a young age. I truly hate this disease. If you're interested, the Osteo thread has some good info which likely you know about already.
