DesiRayMom
Dude at a high-end pet store talked me into an extravigantly priced jar of coconut oil. Desi LOVES it, and after a little research, I found out it's really good for him too. Does anyone use it consistantly? Any ideas where I might find it that it doesn't cost an arm/leg? If you tell me the baking aisle in the grocery store, I'm going to be embarrassed, cause I never go down that aisle. Quote Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog. Guest june
It is available online on several sites. Don't know of any place close to you physically. Oh, also, there are several grades available. Cold pressed is supposed to be the best.
MaryJane
I get coconut oil at Whole Foods.
galgrey
I use it for myself and my dogs. It's done great things for their skin and coats. I buy mine at Vitacost.com. You can get a 54 oz. jar for about $20. Be sure to get the extra virgin, unrefined coconut oil for best results. lukasmom
I have been using coconut oil for a few months for my two hounds. I buy mine at Trader Joe's. It costs $6.99 for a 16 oz jar. My two love it and from what I have read is very good for them. It is an easy thing I can do to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible. Guest HoundWorks
I've heard good things about coconut oil recently for both hounds and humans. I might have to pick some up.

Batmom
They used to say coconut oil was very bad for humans.... It's saturated fat, sometimes trans depending on how it's processed. I think the current fad is because of the taste -- really not much of nutritional use in it, just fat. juliemac
I read an article recently that linked the use of coconut oil to helping retard memory loss in Alzheimer's patients. Clearly I don't use it myself, because I can't remember where I found the darn article.
Guest SoulsMom
So those of you who give to your dogs, how much do you give? I've been using coconut oil for years to cook with because it can be heated to a higher temp than most cooking oils.

I've been using coconut oil for years to cook with because it can be heated to a higher temp than most cooking oils. I just put a dollop on the food a couple times a week or else let them lick it off a spoon. I buy it a Vitamin Cottage. I also use it for my chapped hands and my body. You can even use it on your hair. Cold Pressed, Virgin oil. Quote "Then God sent the Greyhound to live among man and remember. DesiRayMom
I went to VitaCost.com & ordered a 54 oz jar of extra virgin certified organic coconut oil for 20.99. However I saw nothing about "cold pressed." What the heck does THAT mean? Quote Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog. Heat processing would destroy them.
DesiRayMom
Thanks for that info.......I have not yet found anything that says it was cold pressed. Quote Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog.
brandimom
I have been using for about a year on my two gh's and I too read how wonderful it was for them. I was hoping it might help their coat but have not seen any difference. I get mine from Tropical Traditions when they have the two for one (32 oz). I think the website is www.tropicaltraditions.com I do get the cold pressed extra virgin bottles. Edited June 21, 2012 by brandimom
galgrey
This is the article I read that made me give it try. It has worked better for my gang's coats than fish, salmon, or flax oil. My wire haired galgo gets sort of stinky and it completely eliminated the doggy odor. Don't know that it will work for every dog, but I'm sold. http://www.cocotherapy.com/wdj_coconut_oil_article.pdf Quote Cynthia, & Cristiano, galgoAlways in my heart: Frostman Newdawn Frost, Keno Jet Action & Chloe (NGA racing name unknown), Irys (galgo), Hannah (weim), Cruz (galgo), & Carly CW Your Charming Princess http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=1018857 "It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. Busderpuddle
Amazon has it too. How do you keep it on the dog toothbrush long enough to get it all over ? I tried it and it just melted right off and she swallowed it in one gulp. Are there any concerns about diarrhea ? Quote Karen
galgrey
Amazon has it too. How do you keep it on the dog toothbrush long enough to get it all over ? I tried it and it just melted right off and she swallowed it in one gulp. Are there any concerns about diarrhea ? I warm it a little so it's liquid and then dip the toothbrush in it several times during brushing. The article I posted earlier in this thread suggests starting slowly with large dogs getting no more than 1 teaspoon of coconut oil per day to avoid stomach upset/diarrhea and gradually increasing it every few days until they're getting about 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds of body weight. Decrease temporarily if you see any signs of upset.
