Our best girl passed away last night at around 2am. She had fought bone cancer hard since diagnosis which would have been ten weeks ago tomorrow. They say generally by the time it's been diagnosed it has probably spread and been around for awhile anyway so realistically she had it for longer than we knew.

We had 10 weeks of true, quality time and only two occasions where she was in properly bad and prolonged pain. One of those was last night and her pain was just too intense for any of us to try and keep going. She went to sleep peacefully and gently at the emergency vets. Beforehand, she cuddled her head into me and gave me a big 'Freya' hug and the same to my partner. I've never met such an empathetic dog in my life and we just tried to keep strong last night and not frighten her with tears. We told her how much we loved her and that we'd be seeing her again someday. We didn't manage to hold back the tears but hopefully she knew it just meant we loved her.

I can't believe she's gone. We only met her last November, and adopted her in January, but we just fell for her literally the second we saw her. We couldn't wait to take her and our other hound Kelsis home and when we finally got to in January, we made sure she was super spoilt. She was in appaling condition when she was found by the rescue centre and really blossomed with us. She was so beautiful.

Freya was more than a dog in a million. There's no qualifying how amazing she was. She made dog haters think again and made dog lovers fall in love all over again. She was so many wise and wonderful things, as well as being a mischievious little brat when the mood took her

We were so lucky she chose us and we got to feature in the best months of her life where we tried lure coursing, hiking, meeting lots of other greyhounds, going on holidays, campervanning together, off lead adventures, and so much more.

When we brought Freya, and our other hound, home, it was on a Friday. She was still quite timid and a bit shy, it was all new to he after all, a day or so later we brought the dogs over to visit my mam. We always had dogs growing up but they were never as big as greyhounds and I knew my mam was nervous of them just because of their size. Anyway, at this time my mam hadn't been feeling well for a few months and no doctor could diagnose what was wrong. This was also the same day she was being sent into hospital to undergo lots of tests. Anyway, as soon as we went in to the house, Freya latched on to my mam. She went as far as following her up the stairs - and Freya had only learned how to 'do' stairs the day before. This was, from what we'd seen so far, out of character. She wanted to glue herself to my mam's side and would not be taken away. We all thought it was sweet and didn't think much of it. A few weeks later mam was still in hospital and the doctors finally diagnosed her with cancer. Every time after that that we visited with Freya she did the same thing of attaching herself to mam, watching her, wanting to be with her. She does not do this with anyone else, dog or human.

I can only think that she knew before all the idiot doctors that mam was really sick and she was trying to be caring and protective towards her. My mam passed away 14 weeks ago at the age of 58. Freya was diagnosed with the osteo a few weeks later. She had been fine up until mam passed away and then started to limp badly.

A part of me feels like Freya wants to go and find mam and keep on protecting her. I know that sounds strange but she was just that sort of dog, she had an enormous heart.

I'm rambling now but it's just nice to share thoughts of my girl, and a lot of people don't understand being so upset 'over a dog'.

Sleep tight princess, we love you.

Suzanne, I'm so sorry. I lost my Phoenix to osteo in June, and it is a nasty, nasty disease. I'm glad you and Freya had some quality time together post diagnosis, but am so very sorry that she is no longer with you. I'm sorry about your mom, also. I hope the rest of the year brings you some rest, peace, and happiness.

I had seen her pictures in the osteo thread and thought, this dog is so very loved. And that is even more clear after reading your beautiful tribute. A heart dog changes your life, whether you are together for 10 months or 10 years. I wish you could have had more time together, but I'm so glad you found each other and the last months of her life were filled with love.

I'm so sorry you lost your precious Freya.

My heart is breaking for you. That was a beautiful tribute. It really conveyed just how her love knew no bounds-more than one in a trillion. I really believe you are probably right about her wanting to go take care of your mom-you know how angels are. But you know what? She'll find a way to still take care of you too-that's also just the way angels are. God bless all.

Run free healthy and happy Princess Freya. You are loved always and your love and faithfullness will always be a lesson for all of us.

Cancer is a nasty disease. We lost Guinness a week after we realized he wasn't acting right and at the end realized he had cancer. I'm glad you had the time together that you did.

Suzanne, I am so very sorry. Freya was a beautiful girl and while her time was short with you, it was the best of times I am sure. You have had a hard year with losing your mam and now Freya. I hope that someday when your grief has subsided, you can find peace.

Run free Freya, run free sweetie...:gh_run

I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you or sharing Freya's story.

I'm so sorry for your losses, both of Freya & your mother. What an amazing soul your girl was & I have no doubt that she had an enormous connection with your mother that will continue forever. I hope that knowing they're together & watching over you will give you some comfort. Godspeed Freya! flowers_yellow.gif

Your special girl! What a gift she was, and the time she was able to share with your mom was obviously something very meaningful to her. Watching her come into her own, becoming a happy healthy dog, having adventures, and sharing those good times is extra special when she came to you in such rough shape. Her big heart just wouldn't be polluted by her past, but shone through like the star she was.

My heart goes out to you in your loss. In time, I hope the joy of your time together can smooth the harsh pain of her passing.

I am so sorry. The way Freya was with your mam, that can't be taught. It is innate and a quality that we look for in an awesome therapy dog. Freya was just doing what came naturally. She is indeed a special spirit. Her before and after photos show how much she thrived in your care. Well done, mom. :grouphug
