Guest Hewlett
My dog Hewlett is almost 12 years old and this week stopped eating, became lethargic, had some nausea, etc. I was away on vacation and my husband had granite countertops installed in the house which was very noisy and probably upsetting to my grey. I am on my way home now as he has not gotten better despite 2 vet visits and an emergency clinic visit today, Saturday. The vet did an x-ray, has given him IVs and an antibiotic. The vet said the x-ray showed some fluid in the abdomen. He said that usually indicates cancer but tomorrow morning an internal medicine doc is seeing him for an ultrasound to make a more definitive diagnosis. He is at home now resting on his own bed. He always likes home the best. He is drinking. What he eats, even steak last night, got vomited up during the night. Can I hope for a good outcome. He is absolutely by best friend and being stuck in an airport for hours yet until I'm home is breaking my heart. Any advice. Many thanks.

Charlies_Dad
You've done what you can at this time. The ultrasound is a good idea and will hopefully provide you with some answers. GeorgeofNE
Oh dear, so sad. I hope you realize now this has NOTHING to do with the noise from countertop installation? I'm sorry your sweet old buddy is feeling so poorly. Hopefully the ultrasound gives you better information and you can make some choices for your best pal. kudzu
We thought my old guy was dying of liver failure once. Spent two terrible days worried & spooning AD food into him, giving sub-q fluids, pumping him with anti-b's. Ultrasound found nothing, no probs at all. Within a week he was acting basically normal. Ultimate conclusion was that he had a liver infection. He lived another year with no more evidence of liver probs. Sending good thoughts for the appt this morning. Guest Hewlett
UPDATE ON HEWLETT He is now in the ICU of an emergency vet clinic with both cardiac and int med specialists. His heart is functioning at only 10% capacity and has an enlarged heart with resultant cardiomyopathy. They have him on an EKG, Lidocaine and 3 other oral heart meds. In addition he has fluid in his abdomen and a liver mass which they cannot investigate because of his heart problems. We will keep him there all day today but are going back to bring him home with his oral heart meds hopefully begun. He has a lot of anxiety being in strange places and last night I slept with him at home and he was great. We went back to the hospital at 6 a.m. I want that experience again tonight though. He likes being in his own home bed best of all with all of us close by. Tomorrow is another day that we can go back to the doctor for further tests. He has serious health issues ahead but I am determined to make him the happiest dog ever, and that will be in his home. I only wish I had not been gone last week. My heart is breaking. Thank you all for all the thoughts. No one understands greyhound love more than another who has experienced it. They are the best dogs in the world, ask for so little.
