Kylie Update

Yay for you & Kylie! Continued thoughts & prayers here - AND I'll be stopping by your booth at GIG!!

As far as mosquito-borne - they do carry other encephalitic diseases but I've never heard them associated with GME... it's possible, but you're probably right - it affects mostly animals with a compromised immune system (that goes for most of the mosquito-borne people enceph. too...)

Good luck with her - hoping for continued slow improvement!!

WHEW...we're home and what a long day for such a pretty cow girlie dog...She is not the same dog that I took to the vet yesterday! She's still very weak, thin and bandaged & shaved everywhere there is a vein. I finally have a diganosis and some answers now, so I am at peace for the moment. She has granulomatus meningeo encephalitis, which is what I was so afraid of. The vet feels that it was early in the progression of this horrible, crippling illness and she is hopeful for a long slow recovery. She said she could relapse so to keep her activity level down and just take things slow with her. They've increased the pred, doxy and put her on another med, which name eludes me at the moment.

She was able to walk unsupported and even take a poop all by herself, this is really good as I had to keep using the sling.

Thank you so much everyone for your continued prayers, concern and support. I am so overwhelmed with the out-pouring of love for my girl and I can't imagine how I would've gotten through this terribly difficult time without all of you!

Diane, I'll be ordering that cookie now!! :yay she's home!!!!!! :confetti:confetti:confetti

CURFEW AND I ARE HAPPY FOR YOU, that your baby is home, and doing better. Curfew is also doing better with the Pred. How much is Kylie on? We are waiting for the results of a his Phenobarb levels and Cushings test, to be sure it isn't a pituitary tumor.

Will you have a booth at Mt. Hounds in May? I will be the first aid contact there, and we will be presenting the dog first aid seminar.

DO keep us posted! Dee, Curfew, Goldie, Oakly, Staggerlee and Cari

I wanted to send you a PM about your boy but you don't have enough posts to accept them.Kylie is on 20 mg of pred, plus doxy and something for diarrhea..she's definitely not herself but I'm hoping for continued improvement. No, I won't be at Mountain Hounds...maybe next year though! You can send me an e-mail thru my web site if you'd like. Glad to hear Curfew is doing better...what a wild ride this is!!!

Anne, I just was reading your update, so it is GME, exactly what I thought, same symptoms as Sara. Besides the prednisone and doxy and diarrhea med, is she on any other drug for the inflammation such as cytarabine (chemo drug, kills the white cells). Poor Kylie, GME is a nasty brain disease, it is immune generated, it is not viral. The cytarabine is what had the most effect on killing Sara's high white cell count and bringing down the inflammation in her brain that was in her cerebellum, that is the part of the brain that controls their coordination. I am praying that Kylie continues to improve, it is a slow process, but hopefully your vet can push it into remission. When Sara was 1st diagnosed, I made the mistake of reading about GME online, prognosis was not good but she has lived 2 more years since her initial onset. Thinking healing thoughts for Kylie.

No she's not on that drug, but the vet said that she was in the early stages of it..no seizures. I did join that GME web site and am making myself half nuts with everything I've been reading...then I second guess the vet.At this point, I just have to let be what will be...she's better than she was but not anywhere near where she used to be She's dreadfully thin, lethargic and I have to coax her to eat....one day at a time. :candle

Roberta, it's so great that you posted. Sara is the poster girl for GME, and I hope her successful remission will give Anne hope that Kylie, too, can get there.

Anne, try to not be overwhelmed by everything you read and hear. Yes, GME is a complex disease, but it can often be controllable. Asking your vet about whether he plans to start Kylie on some type of chemotherapy or immune modulating medication (so Kylie can eventually be tapered off prednisone) would be a good thing to do, when your brain clears from the roller coaster it's been on the past few weeks.

And if Kylie is started on one of these medications, there are pharmacies (like Costco online) selling many of these drugs for far less than the veterinary hospital would charge. I'd be happy to help you find a good price if needed.

Hang in there, and just take it one day at a time. And if you feel discouraged, think about Roberta and Sara. :)

I have been thinking about Kylie non-stop these past few days and finally just caught up on the news. So relieved that you have a diagnosis. I know what you mean about all the info out in cyberspace - it will drive you to the brink! Don't be too concerned - every dog is different! Besides, the time spent surfing and worrying is less time spent with Kylie. Hope her appetite picks up - I'm sure that you can find something in the frig or the cupboards that will appeal to her assuming that there are no dietary restrictions. Sending unending prayers and healing white light to Kylie and monster hugs for you. Rest easy - she's home with you now and all she needs is some time and your TLC. :kiss2

Thanks Jordan! Sara continues to amaze us and every day is a gift w/her in our life.

Anne, I agree w/Jordan, even if Kylie is in the beginning stages, some type of chemotherapy is worth asking the vet about, I have yet to hear of a success story that did not involve the chemo drugs along w/pred. You are both in my prayers.

Hi everyone..whew.....I don't know where to start here! As of last Wednesday, when I posted, Kylie was in really BAD shape and I was so scared. I took her to a vet that was an hour away from me.This vet was highly recommended for GH's.The next day , the vet tach, Monica called and said I could bring her home..I drove so fast to get there to get my baby dog girl. Both her legs were torn up by the IV's that were put in.I watched her like a hawk from that point on. The following day (Friday), she was starting to go down hill again and couldn't walk without assistance, nor did she want to eat. She lost even MORE weight and was so weak and emaciated.Saturday afternoon, the vet specialist called to find out how she was.I told her and she asked what the other vet found out..I told her they said she has GME..she about flipped out and asked, did they do a spinal tap or an MRI on her? I said no they only gave her supportive therapy from what I can tell...she said well, then she doesn't have GME..take her off the doxy immediately and just give her the pred. She was on too high of a dose in her opinion, and at this point didn't think she had a TBD. I gave her no meds that Saturday and she was going downhill fast. The vet from the e-clinic also called to find out how she was and I told him.Kylie couldn't keep anything down and was starting to have blood in the vomit..she couldn't even hardly stand..she was so sick. My daughter & I stayed up with her thru the night on Saturday night, just crying and sobbing, I had made the decision to walk her to the bridge on Sunday. I knew I couldn't do this alone and once again , my friend Linda, offered to come over and help me( She is an amazing friend whom I am so blessed to have).Linda said to me, why don't you wait a day or two and let the medicine get out of her system and I'll do whatever you want.I agreed..by noon, Kylie started to groom herself and was able to stand for a little bit..she even ate a little bit of food and didn't throw up at all.As the day progressed, she was able to walk a little better and this morning she met met me at the bottom of the stairs all wiggly, warm and happy! She wanted to go for her morning walk up around the corner and so we did. That girl stopped and smelled everything and just looked at different things as if seeing everything for the first time! She's eating really well and is able to poop without her sling and I am optimistic for a good recovery.

I think what really troubles me about this whole ordeal is I never once spoke with the new vet nor did I see her. No tests were done and I essentially paid $780.00 for overnight supportive therapy..and was told she has GME. $3,000.00 later, I still have no answers, but she was worth EVERY penny that I charged!

Aunt Linda is the best! Thanks everyone for all your love, care, concern and support during this extremely emotional and difficult time.

Make sure you have a note put in her file about possible bad reaction to doxy / tetracycline antibiotics.

So glad she is feeling better!
