Guest Annie
Our darling mischievous boy partially severed his dew claw (below the skin line) 5 weeks ago while playing with his littermate, Breezy. As it was still hanging there, the rest had to be removed at our vet's. He started screaming several times a day after this occurrence. It happened mostly when he was lying down and shifting position. He is not a stoic pup, (and a bit of a drama queen ), so we assumed he was tender from the healing dew claw site. But the weeks passed and the screaming remained. DH Geoff and I talked about how his personality seemed to have changed in the last couple of months as well. We had moved (so there was a bit of lifestyle change) and we had attributed his quietness to simply maturing. Grins like this, that we had seen on a daily basis, had stopped altogether: In retrospect it is clear that our comical, crazy boy had lost his joy. Canyon wasn't lame so we had no clue where the pain was coming from. Our vet examined him, and when she manipulated his neck, he screamed with all his might. He also had some difficulty righting his hind paws when she turned them over. She made the referral, and we have an appointment with the neurologist on the 26th. Canyon rarely screams since being put on a course of Metacam. However, new symptoms have developed... he has started tilting his head when he stands and very tentatively shaking it. If you can spare a prayer for Canyon... it would be so appreciated. We are very concerned about our boy. Rickiesmom
Sending prayers for Canyon. Good the Metacam is calming some pain while you wait for the consult. You may want to call the neurologist's office ahead of time to ask if they want Canyon off the Metacam a day or two before they see him on Thursday. We will have all paws crossed here. Guest SoulsMom
Many years ago I had a Pom with the same problem. I was in my early teens at the time and can't remember the medication he was on, but it worked. The 'injury' did come back in later years from time to time when he got older, but he lived a pretty happy and pain free life for the most part. Sending tons of good thoughts for you both

Guest Annie
Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers. We are very worried. His pain level is increasing and so we have picked up 3 days worth ofTramadol to add to the Metacam. Enough to last him till the appointment with the neurologist which is now on the 24th. Here is a little video of our treasure, taken today. Only a couple of months ago, he would have been doing cartwheels with that new toy. This is all he can muster now. (You will also hear Breezy squeaking in the background.)
