Guest vahoundlover
The following was written by Sara (greytlady) in an email to our adopters. He was the most unlucky in color and sex. A big black boy. He sat in the adoption kennel at the track for months which became years, 2 of them to be exact. He was noticed by Hope, who saw something in his eyes that captured her attention. He was the last dog from 2006 still sitting in the kennel, waiting..... waiting.... I told Anita I would take him as a favor, nothing about him really impressed me. That is until he got here. With some special tlc his coat started to shine. His muzzle, flecked with grey was there everytime a bag of treats was opened. Food was his favorite thing. He didn't spend much time in a crate while he was here. Even with all his original equiptment he was a gentleman thru and thru. He earned house privilidges quickly. He was an old soul. I finally made the appointment to get him vetted, which was today. Lee offered to take him in for me and in the hustle and bustle of getting them both thru the hounds at turnout time I neglected to give him that special kiss and hug that all get before their surgery. I thank Lee for giving it to him at the vets, it won't ever be missed again by me. I got the call earlier that EF Cajun Nicky didn't make it after his surgery. I am crushed. As I sit here typing up his rememberance I wish he could have had the life I wish for all the hounds. Love in that special home that is all their own. I remember his quiet, steady, easy going attitude. I remember his gentlemanly manners and his quiet regard when he got some one on one loving. You weren't here very long but you left your pawprints on my heart. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nickers, this wasn't the way I had intended on introducing you to this board. You caught my heart from the moment I laid eyes on you. I opened your crate and was reduced to a blubbering mess. Sara looked at me like I had gone off the deep end....I had. You had Dolly's eyes, eyes so wise, eyes so full of love, I immediately knew I wanted to bring you home. Allan on the other hand was not ready to adopt another. I planted the seeds and started watering them, nurturing them to grow. It was working. Sara had asked me a week ago if I could pick you up on Sat. from the vets, I told her YES! Allan wanted to come with me and meet you, my plan was working...I KNEW once he met you, he'd no longer be able to say no.... I KNEW the pictures I showed him would come to life when he took one look into your eyes....I just knew... Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would be writing your tribute before I could write, WE CHIPPED! Nickers, you didn't get the couch you so deserved but you have a family, Sara and I will never forget you, you touched our hearts with your gentle ways, your loving kisses and those oh so wise eyes. Godspeed my sweet handsome fella, you are loved

silverfish
Oh, how terribly sad! I'm sure it didn't matter to him that he didn't get that last kiss. He knew he was loved, he could feel it, and there is no way he'd blame you for that. He did get his last kiss, but just not from you. I know how that makes you feel - I neglected to allow Jack time to say goodbye to Renie when we took her down to the specialist ... we were in such a rush to get her in the car without hurting her and be in time for our appointment, we scarcely said goodbye to him ourselves. And she never came home. But I don't feel that he blamed us, he was just bewildered. It's me that feels guilty. And as you say, I won't do that again. You gave Nickers something very precious, your love and acceptance. It's all dogs want, once their basic needs for food and shelter are met. Guest greytfulhounds
My heart is broken for Nicky & for all of you that loved Nicky. Hope, you were Nicky's hero......his angel. You took the time to look into his soul and see how beautiful he was. Because of your caring & compassion Nicky did not die in a crate at the track......he got to go home. It may not have been the home you wished for him but he did not know that there was something more that he was missing. What he did know is that he was special, that he was loved & that someone saw him for the special boy he was. There are so many that never get to experience that feeling........and, I don't just mean greyhounds I mean so many beautiful furry souls that pass on without knowing a warm touch, a kiss on the nose, a treat......they pass on without knowing what it feels like to be special to someone. You & Sara gave Nicky that gift.....he was a very lucky boy. I am so, so sad for all of you. I am also sad that I won't get to meet him when I come to visit next month but through your photos & stories of him these past few weeks I knew how special he was and he has forever touched my life......he will forever be in my memory. Godspeed handsome boy and watch over the angels that watched over you! Please tell my Bridge kids that I love & miss them.

CaliforniaGreys
How very heartbreaking indeed. I sit here and look at my big black boy who is the most loving, sensitive boy I have ever met. Those who passed this boy up missed out on something very special, something you saw. His face is beautiful and kind.
