Just seeing this, and adding my chanting to the mix:

*Cofax, your innards need some attention, but you'll be fine!! Pretty soon, you'll be home milking your people for special meals brought to you in bed (their bed? ;) ) Cofax, your innards need some attention, but you'll be fine!! I'm exhausted...... I sat in her crate from 9:30 - 11:30 - took a break for lunch, sat in her crate 1- 2:30 when she went under. They said they had to do surgery and not the scope because of the size of the mass and that the bowl was obstructing it. The anestisia (sorry for the spelling and typing - I think I got about 1-2hrs sleep last night).... made her empty her bowel on the table - which tells me that there wasn't a blockage?? The mass that they said they saw in the films and scans - they couldn't find. Her lymph nodes were enlarged and inflamed with fluid, the bowel was red, enlarged and irritated from start to finish - but no tumor? Confused they took samples from the leison in her bladder, the lymph nodes and bowl. So, we're back to the beginning- what caused this........ something she ate - tainted grass? infection? cancer ? Biopsy results hopefull by TUESDAY! She has about a 6inch cut and they hope she'll be home tomorrow. I can call tonight for an update - but not to visit until tomorrow. A few friends suggest I call Dr. Couto directly. I'm sure these three doctors did the best they could with what information they had - but we can't help wonder - was Dr. Couto suggestion better and did she endure this for no reason.

Lots of recovery ahead - special diets, etc. Her boyfriend Sam and his humans said they'll come home when she's up to it since she'll be homebound for awhile.

My sister in law was with me all afternoon until Bob met me at the vet around 3:45, even sitting in the crate with us. I wouldn't have made it through the day without her, Noreen from Great up here keeping in touch when she could, and all you. But, I think I'm going to get some jammies on, put a movie in (The BEE movie) to take my brain out and try to regain my strength..... I'll need it if I have to bring her home tomorrow.

So, keep the prayers going-------- it's not far from being over.

Although you were able to rule out some things, it must be so frustrating and worrisome to not be able to get a firm diagnosis. Give Cofax a big hug for me when she comes home. And I hope you have a nice peaceful sleep - there's nothing like stress to wear you down. :grouphug

Tina, I'm so sorry to hear about this - I hope Cofax is doing much better tomorrow and able to come home.

Please have faith in your decision to follow the surgeon's advice. No second guessing allowed here. You were given a recommendation by a qualified specialist who was looking at Cofax and assessing her clinically. He was also looking at the ultrasound and xrays, and based upon his evaluation, he made a clinical decision. I have tremendous respect for Dr. Couto and trust him implicity; but he didn't have Cofax in front of him. What makes a good clinician is a gut instinct that tells you instantly that a patient is very, very ill. It sounds as if Cofax was acutely ill last night, and that surgical intervention to relieve an obstruction was essential.

Reading through the radiologist's ultrasound report, he states that he does not see a mass lesion, but does see something (which does not appear to be normal bowel) causing an obstruction. It could be tumor, certainly, but it could also be a loculated (self-confined) area of infection, inflammation, or, sometimes, ingestion of a foreign body can cause the development of a loculated inflammatory reaction -- any of these could cause bowel obstruction. The fact that she evacuated her bowels under anesthesia doesn't rule out obstruction. The ultrasound findings suggest to me (from a human medicine perspective) diffuse inflammation throughout the bowel - and that was confirmed when the surgeon examined the bowel during surgery. Lymph nodes can be enlarged as a result of cancer, but inflammation or infection can also do this.

At this point, as hard as it is, all you can do is wait for the pathology report to come back. In the meantime, with the obstruction relieved, Cofax should improve. You did what had to be done, and I believe you made the right decision. Please don't doubt yourself.

ETA: Healing thoughts on their way to your precious girl....

Everything houndznigz said. And FWIW, based on what you've told us, I'd've done exactly as you did. Including asking Dr. Couto his opinion, discussing the options with the surgeon who had Cofax in front of him, and then going ahead with the surgery.

Sending more hugs, and more prayers for your girlie.
