Oh I'm so relieved to hear Jane is back home and seems to be doing well!! :couchjump I was so worried about her!

The times my dog had to stay at Columbia, I was really pleased with them! I worry about everything, so their frequent calls were very comforting. :blush

Continued prayers and well wishes heading her way! :candle:hope

We love you Janey!! :kiss2 You :getwell sweetheart!

:bighug to you Meredith!

Sorry --- long day at work, and then practical things to attend to (like feeding her royal hiney-ness and putting aloe on her scrapes). Just now getting a chance to log on.

This morning Jackson was play-bowing and barking at her when I was opening up her crate. He's such a hoot. She has NEVER played, but for some reason he thought he should try to encourage her to come out and play this morning. The other two seem happy she's home, and hang pretty close to her (much to her dismay, as she prefers to be left alone). They did just fine when she was gone, but everyone seems much more settled now that the Queen Bee is back on her throne.

When she was outside this morning, she was in the front yard as usual, and all of a sudden she took off at a trot toward the parked cars in the front of the house. It was as though she had completely recovered. Took a minute to catch her, and then had to send one of the kids in for a leash. It was a riot! Unfortunately, she's not that good at walking all the time - she just has these moments where everything seems to work again, and then she goes back to being afraid and not sure of where her feet/legs are in relation to her body.

Aside from this morning's escapade and attempted escape, it's been pretty uneventful. She spent the entire day on the couch, even when John left twice - once for lunch and once to pick up kids and take them for haircuts and dinner. She does NOT want to be on the dog bed anymore. She finally pooped this afternoon - first one since she'd been home, and DH got the pleasure of that big one - and she ate a tremendous dinner (2 cans of food and about 1/2 a cup of dry).

Time to put her outside one more time and do meds, and then we're all going to bed!

Sounds to me like she's doing pretty good! :lol I wonder if some of her hesitation is more from being blind than the backend issues. :dunno

Boss still has a "different" gait, but it doesn't effect his happiness and ability to take walks and a little spin in the yard....Jane has come a long way....I can imagine how thrilled you are!

she definitely has back end issues - her back legs cross frequently, and they're the first ones to give out.

i really think she either has partial sight or it comes and goes, because there are times she'll track things - like DH's hand across the room - and other times she acts like she can't see anything. Maybe she can see some light/shadows. it's hard to say. but we had a refrigerator repair guy here this morning, and she didn't so much as look at him, which is not what she would have done before - she'd have been barking and trying to get at him. and he walked right by her on his way in/out today, so it's not like she was two rooms away. he even was hesitant to walk past her until I said, "oh, she's blind and can't get up, so there's nothing to worry about from her."

she pooped in her crate and mashed it around, so she got a bath this morning. that was a bit traumatic for her - and not very good for my back - but she's clean and napping now, her belly full, wearing a new collar (american flag motif, in honor of the holiday). this morning when she was on the couch, she actually put her head in my lap - the first time she's done that since she's been home. and she was quite insistent that I keep petting her, which is also the first time she's done that. so i think she's forgiving me for leaving her at the vet, not just once but TWICE (oh, the horror!).

this afternoon, i'm going to see if i can get her to walk through the house to my office so she can nap there while i work. i want her to start getting used to maneuvering around more, and take her to places she spent a lot of time. i know how much she hates the crate, so i keep telling her she has to get stronger so she can come upstairs with us at night. ......When we first got her, she was an only dog and literally destroyed anything and everything in or near the crate because of her severe separation anxiety. it's the reason we *had* to get Porsche, and it took nearly 3 years for her to finally be ok when we'd leave the house, so I know this whole returning to the crate thing is traumatic for her.

So that's the morning update! :) We're still here, we're still alive, and we're trying to make progress.

I'm so glad Jane is getting better! I'm so glad she's fighting and that it's not neospora.

It sounds like you're going to be needing to bath her more frequently. I was wondering if you could rig a sling for her in the bath so it's not so bad on your back. Maybe install one of those bars for people with mobility issues in the bathtub and rig some wide, adjustable straps from it under Jane's belly. You can get nylon straps with closures that allow you to pull them taught at sporting/boating stores. I would think 2-3 of the 2" ones would support her really well and not bruise.

I've also used a lamb's wool-lined car seat harness to carry a dog around with. I used one from FourPaws: Harness

It worked really well because there's a strap at the top that you can carry/assist them with and all of the bottom is padded & lined. It was really like carrying around a beautiful, four-pawed suitcase!

Well, I think wonders will never cease. I'd been in the living room w/ her for several hours, and decided I really needed to be in my office getting some work done. She was on the couch, and not real interested in moving, so I told her I'd be in my office and I'd come check on her soon. A few minutes later, I heard a little yelp, which I figured was her changing positions on the couch, as she sometimes gets a paw stuck under her. Not a minute or so after that, I heard something and turned around, and she was standing outside my office. She got a big drink, and then she kept looking at the back stairs, which are right across from my office and the way they usually go outside (to the back yard). So I took the hint and we very carefully made the trip down the 7 winding stairs to the back door, down one more step, and into the yard. She peed, and then walked further into the yard to find her poop spot, and then we made our way back to the house and twice as slowly up the stairs -- she's better at going down than up, so I have to stand behind her and place each foot for her. Then we rested a few minutes in the kitchen before walking back to the living room and getting back up on the couch for a quick drink and a nap. She's totoally sacked out now. Of course we had Jackson as an escort the whole way. He gets in the way, but I think he's afraid he's going to miss out on something if he doesn't stick close to her.

I'm a little worried right now - she has an odd bulge on her "top"side - I can't tell if it's just because of how she's laying, or if things are wonky inside her side, close to the end of her ribs. I think I'm going to try repositioning her to see if that changes anything.
