  1. Hoping to hear a good update on your boy soon.
  2. Jan, those are some pretty fancy kitty potties. My friend's dog is a puggle and she's about the size of a big cat. that'll make it tricky to find a little box with a small entrance.
  3. A friend's non-greyhound has started snacking from the kitty litter box. This is a relatively new behavior. The layout of her apartment is such that it would be difficult to put up barriers. Plus her boyfriend has mobility issues, so that limits gating. She's asked me about the food additives to discourage poop eating. We use a product that works for Charlie about 90% of the time. But she's dealing with a dog eating cat poop. Is there a product she can feed her cats that will deter her dog from wanting it? I have zero experience with cats, so any suggestions for my friend are welcome.
  4. I am so sorry that your girl had to leave you. Hreinert, if you would like me to add your girl's name to the list of Bridge Angels in the Remembrance section here on Greytalk, just post her name here.
  5. What a beautiful horse. I'm sorry she had to leave you.
  6. Here's a new product that will soon be released to veterinarians to stop bleeding within seconds. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/17-old-invented-ingenious-way-132200709.html#
  7. Agreeing with Turbotania that you should pick up his bowls if he doesn't eat within a certain amount of time. Tether him to you to catch him in that "I want to poo indoors" moment.
  8. Since you mention your vet saw puncture marks, did he/she consider a snake bite?
  9. I keep Gas-X (coated and without sorbitol) on hand just in case. It'll help settle rumbly tummies too. Since your boy likes sleeping on the AC vents, by chance is he wearing dangling dog tags? They can get caught in the vent.
  10. Sweet, sweet Mikey joined us on Thanksgiving Day. At age 12 his long-time owners needed to get rid of him so they could stage their house to sell it. Mikey and his 9 y.o. greyhound sister had to go. In my opinion, the dogs enhanced the house. The owners were hoarders of junk. These 2 dogs were the only things of value inside. Mikey's sister landed herself a wonderful new owner. He was nervous his first day but settled in quickly. His confidence grew. He loved a blankie on chilly nights and never moved once covered. He loved Jan's cookies, Burpdog cookies and the dehydrated fruits he'd received as a gift. For an old guy Mikey was in fairly good health. He had an odd spell in February and although we were thinking liver/kidneys, it turned out he had extensive lung cancer. Dr. Couto agreed. He acted more like a young dog some days and old days on others, but never a dying dog. Mikey was terrified of thunderstorms. Trazodone was a tremendous help, but for the past few days we were having had loud thundering storms for hours at a time. None of my other tricks for thunderphobia helped. Last night he had a horrible, constant cough for several long minutes. He was unresponsive, quivering from the thunder, pulse erratic, gums pale. Going to the e-vet in a storm was not going to happen. During a break in the thunder I was able to give him another dose of trazodone and get him to a darker room. I expected him to be gone this morning, yet with sunny skies he bounded up ready for breakfast. The day was good until he would not put weight on his right wrist. It was swollen. And then the thunderstorms started again. He was starting to panic and would not be able to tolerate a night of stormy restlessness and pacing. It would have been cruel to make him put up with the trifecta of lung cancer + storm terror + plus unable to walk on a painful wrist. Fortunately the e-vet is only 3 minutes away. They were slammed but got us right in and immediately gave him a strong dose of the calming pre-euthanasia drug. As the thunder loudly boomed directly overhead, Mikey slid into a comfortable sleep. Breathing gently, peacefully, and no longer bothered by the growing thunder. He slipped away easily with the final injection. When I returned home my DH told me Mazy (for the first time ever) had freaked from the thunder. The timing seemed to match the loudest booms while Mikey was passing. I let her sniff the blanket I'd brought to the e-vet until I could bear it no more and put it in the washer. We had 6+ months filled with amusement and love from a very special boy. Run free Mikey. Go sniff and pee on all the girly pee over the Bridge. Jan will be adding a video for me....
  11. What a lovely old boy. I am sorry that he had to leave you.
  12. Check his foot pads for any cuts or corns.
  13. Stormsmom, since you don't have enough posts to PM, email me at this address (minus the spaces) maco duck@ ec.rr .com
  14. Many of my older hounds have had cloudy eyes. Vet never called them cataracts, just old. Since your vet said he may need eye drops in the future, did she mention Pannus as a diagnosis? If you can swing it I'd suggest a consult with vet eye specialist. Better to ward off future eye issues now than later.
  15. Gracie had severe SA. She was destructive to herself, our house (shredded curtain, chewed walls and furniture), her crate (peeing and pooping in it). Although she was only 2, she had been returned to the adoption kennel because the first owners had tried to make her a vegetarian and she wasn't agreeable. As first time adopters (in 2002) we had no clue as to why she was such a wild unhappy child. I wish I had known at GreyTalk back then. Like I said, she was only on clomicalm for 4 months +/-. A few years later she was much more confident and become a therapy dog with TDI.
  16. Getting Dr Couto to review films without being a member of his new service is $120. Thinking goods thoughts for Throp.
  17. Can you cut back on the walks for a while? Just go out for potty? Do you have a fenced yard? It might just be too much stimulation. If you consider medication- we used clomicalm with only our first girl, Gracie. It does take several weeks to have an effect plus you cannot stop it cold turkey. All together she was on it less than 4 months. Went from being terrified and destroying our house to a much calmer girl. If he is OK in the house and it's just outside that he has problems, I'm not sure your vet would prescribe clomicalm. The next month will be difficult as there are so many idiots shooting fireworks.
