  1. Thanks Ed. No, I am not stronger. It's just too painful to post in individual memorials so I started the Bridge Angels list.
  2. Saying goodbye to the beautiful greyhounds and their friends who left us in November 2015. As you run with the wind send a caress to wipe our tears. Gone but never forgotten. Loved forever. Run free with those who have gone before you. Greet all those that will follow. Ben Molly Bo Noble Storm Brody, the horse Zim Lenny Chopper Lucky Comanche Seda, the galgo Juno Goodog, the Rottie Dior Diesel, the French police dog Stella and Max, the Rotties Misty San Tan Snuggles Joe Pippin Irene Remy Spriet Darby TK McCarthy JJ, the kitty Cordal King Lucius Phaelin They'll always be with us, just slightly beyond the point that we can see with our eyes. In our heart, though, they'll be bright and clear, as they always were.
  3. I feel honored to have met Ben. He had such a gentle old soul. He was one in a million.
  4. Amicar is now in short supply. This is what I posted in another thread: Recently I asked Dr Couto again about Amicar and Tranexamic Acid: Amicar In out study we showed that dogs >35kg were more prone to bleeding if receiving 500 mg (so I would use 750-1000) Tranexamic Acid 650 mg is fine (This was in response to me asking again about compounding, since TA only comes in 650 mg) Your vet can write the Rx for TA. It will be an "off label use". Here it only cost about $35. Amicar, if you can find it, will run $550-650 for the 5 day dosage.
  5. Recently I asked Dr Couto again about Amicar and Tranexamic Acid: Amicar In out study we showed that dogs >35kg were more prone to bleeding if receiving 500 mg (so I would use 750-1000) Tranexamic Acid 650 mg is fine (This was in response to me asking again about compounding, since TA only comes in 650 mg) Your vet can write the Rx for TA. It will be an "off label use". Here it only cost about $35. Amicar, if you can find it, will run $550-650 for the 5 day dosage. CVS was able to locate the Amicar and when it came in I expected to be able to use my GoodRx.com coupon. I had the bad luck to need Amicar when the company had just been sold and the new manufacturer refused to sell it as a generic anymore. I then took my Rx for TA to a compounding pharmacy who promised to get it in (not a stock item) and have it ready for pickup the day of Percy's teeth extractions. They didn't so I went back to CVS and got the Amicar. In the meantime Percy was doing poorly. He came to me in August with 8 teeth at age 12. He needed to have 6 removed. It was not known if he was a bleeder but my mommy sense was tingling. He bled and bled on the table. My vet had a small vial of Amicar that she could squirt directly into the empty tooth sockets. Then she lasered. Then they said he was fine and I could pick him up. And then he crashed and had to go back on oxygen while I held him. I brought him home an hour later regretting all that he'd had to go through. He gasped for hours before his breathing finally eased. Most likely that distress had been from the anesthesia. I gave him the Amicar pills that evening, the next morning and noon. By then the TA compounded to a liquid was ready. I just squirted it down his throat. The TA in liquid form is only good for 7 days so I kept using that and saved the Amicar pills for the future. The next morning he was better. By that evening he was ready to eat soggy kibble. By day 2 he was back to normal. That's Percy in my siggy, minus the hillbilly front teeth. He's a happy boy and hasn't missed a meal. I hope your boy feels better soon.
  6. If your vet suggests ACE, say No! Immobilizes the dog and they will still be terrified.
  7. We haven't used Zyklene but we've used Trazodone. It also will require a vet visit and prescription. We've since switched to Richard's Organic Pet Calm. I order it from Chewy.com http://www.chewy.com/dog/richards-organics-pet-calm-clamshell/dp/43611 I give Mazy one full eyedropper of the liquid when I see she senses and thunderstorm or hears fireworks. Within a few minutes she stops shaking and will lie down in a back bedroom. For storms of long duration I have given her an additional dropper full. Years ago I used Rescue Remedy and found it to be useless. I've never been able to find Richard's Organic Pet Calm in any store so I order it online.
  8. Dr Couto recently said the 650mg of TA was OK. I'd had mine compounded down to a 500mg liquid and it cost $35. Since it would be an off-label use for our greyhounds, GoodRx.com might not be able to offer a discount. Worth a try though.
  9. Oh Katy, what sad thing for you to lose both in one year. {{{hugs}}}
  10. Kikibean, I was told the compounded liquid was only good for a week. I also let the pharmacist know it was for a dog so there would be no artificial sweeteners added. So your compounding pharmacist was able to convert the 650mg tablet Amicar to 500mg in a capsule? I presumed that's would happen with my order. I'd never used this pharmacy before and the pharmacist picked was what easiest for him to do.
  11. If it is allergies, Zirtec works better than Benadryl.
  12. Flea dirt looks like pepper only round. Check around the base of the tail. Years ago I had to pick up a dumped returned greyhound. They'd only had him for a month. They complained about him scratching his neck to pieces. It was fleas.
  13. Have you run your hand around the inside of the collar? Is it sewn with nylon thread? Any sign of fleas or flea dirt?
  14. Are her lymph nodes still swollen? If she truly has lymphoma you will be very lucky to her to live a few months. When mine had lymphoma one had to be put down within days of the swelling. The other in less than 2 weeks. Treatment would have been futile.
  15. Neylasmom, how do you teach "blow bubbles"? Mazy will probably think I'm trying to drown her.
  16. I found this article which addresses some of your questions: http://www.leospetcare.com/a-veterinary-guide-to-tear-stains/ And this one too: http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2014/11/12/pet-tear-staining.aspx
  17. Such a beautiful love story. May Henry remain in your heart and Sterling's forever as a life well lived.
  18. Since we just joined the Greyhound Health Initiative I will be switching to Embrace since we'll get a discount (up to 20%). http://www.embracepetinsurance.com/compare
  19. seeh2o, thanks for the link. Some of those pictured look like what I find in my yard. The wet weather really has them popping up.
  20. Here's some folks: http://www.gnwgreyhounds.org/calendar.htm Looks like they do a Meet & Greet in Spokane occasionally.
  21. I tried looking for pictures of poisonous mushrooms in the US but the search had poisonous and regular wild mushrooms jumbled with it. If anyone of a website, please post a link.
