  1. I was just going to suggest this. There are times in a dog's life (and our own) when repatterning is necessary. Since your husband seems to be the trigger for her unusual behaviour, he needs to be involved in changing it. Judy had an excellent point about littermates and their close connection. I expect that Rascal is grieving, but hoping Daddy can fix things. On a positive note, I'm so happy to hear that Rascal is still doing well. I always tell people when talking about cancer "if my dog has to get cancer I want it to be hemangiopericytoma".
  2. Sending the gentlest of hugs to Traveler and his Mom.
  3. I would ask for a fine needle aspiration of the suspicious area. The will tell you whether it is infection or not. Praying that is what you are looking at and Sahara is back to normal soon.
  4. Just the news I've been praying for. Kisses for handsome Steakers.
  5. Here is the recipe for homemade pedialyte. I was given this recipe by a children's hospital health care professional in 2004. 4 cups boiled water 1 cup apple juice 2 Tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt Nutritional Yeast, or Red Star Yeast is a great supplement. It is recommended for vegetarians as it is loaded with B vitamins that are in meat. The B vitamins help the formation of healthy red blood cells. Many dogs who won't eat are tempted by the taste and the vitamins in it promote appetite. My dogs get this daily and it has also given the very soft coats.
  6. Almost like Peanut's owie. I had to take her in only because her's was higher, so everytime she moved her knee you could see inside her leg ewwww! She's had a couple that look just like Indianna's I would clean that up and keep a close eye on it for infection.
  7. See if you vet is willing to go this route. C-PET Canine Platelet Enhancement Therapy Canine and Equine Pet Kit: A novel Platelet Enhancement Therapy for the treament of osteo-arthritis, tendon and ligament damage. Platelet Enhancement Therapy is a technique using the animal's own platelets for healing. This therapy does not require surgery.
  8. Really good advice Kerry. Just what I was going to post. Hugs to you and Merlin.
  9. It's taken me 3 days to come here and post, I still have trouble believing she's gone. Xan I don't have to tell you what a wonderful little one Wabi was. You can tell that by the number of people who are shocked and saddened by her passing. She has left such a legacy and taught us much about living life to the fullest. I'd like to think that Miz Foxy is looking out for her, she's just the type of girl she'd like to hang around with. Hugs to you and H. (we really need some dandelions around here ... just sayin' )
  10. It's an amazing and wonderful thing how deeply these hounds touch our lives. Bear, your light still shines brightly on us.
  11. I see Greg has taken care of the important info. Glad to see you finally made it. Welcome from here in Ottawa. Janet with Jake, Jet, Peanut and Mama Grandy (who will make it onto my siggy soon)
  12. Then you'd be right, no deer carcasses in our yard. Good to know about the Brazilian items, I'll take another look at them.
  13. FWIW, it's worth looking into items from Brazil, though I would avoid rawhide for the tendency to cause obstructions. Brazil has one of the better beef supplies in the world - far better than the U.S. It has everything to do with what she eats. Dogs need a chewing "outlet" because they are fed a diet that has eliminated their natural chewing exercise. It's the dog equivalent to humans needing gyms because we now have largely sedentary lives. The need exists, it just has to be artificially provided. You're making an assumption she's fed kibble which isn't the case. I will check out some treats made in Brazil though. I just don't know anyone else who has tried them. Although I know people must buy them since they restock at PatsMart all the time.
  14. What, pray tell, is wrong with Brazil? Marrow bones are far more hazardous to the health of a dog than anything sourced from South America. Then again, if we didn't feed crapple, we wouldn't need long lasting chews to pick up the slack. I didn't say there was anything wrong with Brazil, just that the only treats I did find were made in Brazil, Mexico, Columbia and China none in Canada or the USA. I'm unsure so I don't buy. Needing a long lasting chew has nothing to do with what I feed, I have a chewer, and giving her alternates to our coffee table and other items is important.
  15. Joe is simply gorgeous. Welcome out of lurk mode!
  16. I spent over 30 minutes reading labels at PetsMart and other supply stores looking for dog treats like rawhide etc that is made in Canada or the USA. Didn't find one! Lots made in Brazil, Columbia and Mexico as well as China. I'm buying a dehydrator soon so I can make my own chicken jerky, liver, sweet potato chips etc. I guess marrow bones will be the only long time chews for now.
  17. Chris, sending everyone some major We had an episode of unexplained diahrea about 5 weeks ago. Never did figure out why, but 3 out of the 4 were off their food and liquid poop for a couple of days. Right when I was about to take them to the vet they all got better. The only thing I can think of is they ate something in the yard. Praying they improve quickly. Came back to add this in case you haven't seen it already. Link to OSU Nesletter - Digestive Upsets
  18. It may not all be boredom. Dogs raised in a kennel environment haven't encountered all the cool "toys" that are found in homes. We often forget that they need to explore, and they experience things with their noses and with their mouths. We see a candle as a decorative and useful item, dogs (Grandy! :rolleyes ) may see it as a smelly chew toy. Hound proofing and muzzling is the way to go at this point, curious hounds can be a danger to themselves. Grandy so far has shredded magazines, flyers, toilet paper and mail; chewed 2 CD cases, a bottle of shower gel, a corn cob (this one still makes me nervous) a large pumpkin candle, her muzzle and today she helped herself to an empty beer bottle. We go through periods where she doesn't touch a thing, then a few days when she'll take anything not nailed down or 5' up. She keeps me on my toes.
  19. Have you done a fecal to rule out worms? The reason I ask is I noticed you posted that he had fleas a while back, and tapeworm is spready by fleas. When I first brought Peanut home, she had diahrea off and on. I remembered that she had fleas about a few weeks before I brough her home, so we checked. Sure enough she had worms. We treated them and no more diahrea. I hope it's that simple for Jake.
  20. I always have polysporin eye drops on hand. I'm suspicious when a human and a dog have similar symptoms. Working in pre school I know how quickly and easily conjunctivitis can happen. At the first sign of greenish discharge I treat for 24 hours. If it doesn't clear up off to the vet we go. Could be both of you have allergies, it sure is the season around here. Benedryl is what I give and if it doesn't work then your vet can give something a bit stronger. I've had two of my hounds have corneal ulcers without yellow/green discharge, both had very runny eyes and blinked constantly with that eye. Hope you either figure it out, or it resolves on it's own, eye stuff makes you feel crappy.
