  1. I use trifexis which does fleas and heart worms in a pill form. I give it to them after I feed them and they do great on it! I've not had a problem with fleas all year.
  2. So sorry for your loss, he was way too young. I'm glad he had you and your partner to love him the short time he was here.
  3. I would go to the vet then for sure. Part of why she told us to just keep it wrapped is because I could see it was ripped cleanly out and because Gigi is only almost 3 years old and healthy.
  4. This just happened to Gigi a week ago today except her entire nail came off. She had a lot of bleeding, but we put some quick stop on it and cleaned it out and bandaged it up. I called the vet and she told us to keep it wrapped up for at least 48 hours and to watch it for signs of infection. She left the bandage on until Monday and then decided to chew it off. I have been keeping an eye on it and it doesn't seem to be bothering her. I'd say depending on how old Wendy is if she will let you clean it out, you'll probably be able to avoid going to the vet. The vet also told us since it tore completely out that there is a chance it will never grow back.
  5. My girl came straight from the farm. She was in a run with her littermate until they were brought up to our rescue to be adopted out and she will be three next month. Maybe it depends on the farm, but i think generally they are with another greyhound in a run up until they are brought to the track. My girl is also not the norm because she has no sleep aggression whatsoever and loves to snuggle right up with her head next to mine when we go to bed! Even though she does this though, I am still careful with her when she is laying down because you just never know!
  6. They will "sort it out". I have 2 mixed breeds that play VERY rough and when we added GiGi into the mix she quickly made it known they would not be doing that to her. Nothing aggressive but she firmly made it clear to them and now they leave her alone pretty much and only get rough with each other. I'm sure they will all be fine! And Congratulations on your engagement!!
  7. We use tee tree oil on our lab who has grass allergies. You can get it in an organic spray or loose to boil in water and rinse him off with. Our lab loves it!
  8. Sambuca, oh wow the poor baby! That has to hurt, I think I'll take the missing toe nail! I always thought everyone was exaggerating when they said how accident prone greys were, I thought the same thing---they are so graceful how can they be that clutzy! Guess I was wrong I hope Sailors feels better soon!
  9. So we've had our first major "accident" with GiGi. Some how she managed to pull her toenail completely off. I've heard greyhounds are clutzes and I guess she's living up to that! I have no idea how it happened, one minute she's playing outside and the the next she's jumping on the couch I notice the pool of blood by her foot! This happened last night and right now she's got her foot wrapped up and is giving me a dirty look from the couch! We managed to get the bleeding to stop and winces she's young(only 3) the vet told us since it was a clean pull out and we cleaned it out goo, just to keep it wrapped up and watch it. Welcome to the world of greyhound ownership! Lol
  10. Sweet girl. These always leave me in tears. I'm so sorry you lost her.
  11. Oh no I haven't I didn't even know they made those. I was talking about the plain cheerios, I'm not sure I want to introduce peanut butter flavored to them!! LOL that might make even more craziness at breakfast time
  12. Mine are obsessed with Cheerios! We started out giving them to my lab mix as a low-fat treat (he has a bit of a weight problem) but now all my other dogs love them too and go nuts when I pull the box out
  13. Welcome! That's great your are researching before you adopt. You might even look into fostering first. I hate to say " try before you buy", but we started fostering greyhounds first after learning their story and knew we eventually wanted to adopt one of our own. We wanted to help all of them, but we wanted to find the one grey that would mesh well with our other dogs and cats we already had. Luckily it didn't take us long before GiGi came into our lives we are still fostering too and it is such a good feeling when you find the right home for them!
  14. Congrats! Like said previously welcome to the failed fosters club they are an added expense, so worth it in the long run!
  15. Well that's too bad, hopefully you can come out to one soon. Maybe you can check out a meet and greet soon if you felt like coming down one day.
  16. I love working with Shamrock! We are going to continue fostering for them and I volunteer with them for events and meet and greets. They are good group of people. They are hosting the bluegrass festival next weekend. You should check it out. There is info on their website. http://www.greyhoundsofshamrock.org/
  17. Thanks! I think she's pretty terrific my cat is a ragdoll and will curl up next to anyone! And that's not a dog bed that's my bed! Lol she's already taken that over!!
  18. Hi everyone I wanted to take the time to introduce myself, we recently adopted our first greyhound through Shamrock Greyhound Placement in Louisville, KY. I started off volunteering with them and had decided to try out fostering since we already have two "rescue" dogs that we have had for a few years. I have become an addict to this forum and have been "stalking" it for some time. I love all the stories and information shared! Our house is pretty small so we weren't sure how adding another large dog to the mix would do, but it wasn't too bad! Anyway, I loved out first foster so much and was heartbroken when she went to her forever home that I didn't think I could do it again. My husband convinced me and we soon got our GiGi......big mistake on his part! She is now the newest member of our family and I cannot be happy to say that I am was a "foster failure!" We are still going to foster and see how things go, but I am super happy to have my girl. She is the sweetest thing and luckily never had to race. Her name was Good Girl and she came from West Virginia. When I get time to set up the stuff to add pictures I'll have to put some up of her. Thanks for letting me share!
  19. I'm new to this forum, but we just adopted our first greyhound through Shamrock Greyhound Placement in Louisville, KY so I've been stalking this forum for awhile. Anyway, I have a lab mix that has extreme food allergies and we finally found that the Acana Pacifica works best for him. I know its a pricey food, but they really do eat less of it since it's a higher quality and so the price really evens out to some of the other brands. In my opinion it is a great food and is made in Canada. It has great ingredients and my dogs love it. Our greyhound Good Girl really seems to be enjoying it too!
