  1. An update on using the 50mg Trazadone Rx: Came home from Europe yesterday evening around 7:30 and fireworks were to begin at 9:00 pm about a mile north of us. Sheba heard the first booms (I didn't) and became anxious so I gave her one 50mg tablet. That definitely helped a lot and she calmed down and slept through it. Worked for us. Fireworks again tonight at 9:00 pm 2 miles south of us. I assume she'll hear them before I do and will let me know it's time for a 50mg pill again.
  2. Vet said she has some dogs on Trazadone full time so could be used either way I suppose.
  3. I'm going on vacation soon and don't get home until July 3. Dog-sitter friend staying at my house with her two greyhounds. With neighborhood and city Fourth of July fireworks probably starting over the June 30 weekend and Sheba absolutely traumatized by fireworks (heart racing, shaking, panting), I decided to get an anti-anxiety Rx from the vet yesterday. She prescribed Trazadone 50 mg, two tablets every 12-24 hours. To test Sheba's reaction since this is the first time for such medication, I gave her two tablets this morning at 7:00 after her breakfast. Shortly after, I could tell it affected her as she came over to me a few times like she was asking me why she felt so weird. Then she was rather zombie-like and pretty much slept for the next few hours. Seems to be pretty much back to normal after about 4 hours. I'm going to try it out again tomorrow morning but with only one tablet to see the reaction. Note that this will not be a frequent administration of Trazadone, really only for fireworks or a really, really bad thunderstorm. Anyone else use Trazadone on their hounds? What results do you get?

  5. Where in Florida? I'm in Cape Canaveral.
  6. Oh my oh my oh my, and the cutest ears ever! So sorry for your loss and that it stays with you still so painfully. I somehow just know you will see him again.
  7. Too steep, too narrow, too wacky, too dangerous. Get a real staircase built?
  8. Be sure to get a replacement muzzle ASAP!
  9. Oh yes, lots of food-grabbing stories here! After having had four Great Danes and now Greyhounds, no food gets left on the counter even for a minute. If having company over and appetizers are on the table, I caution guests if leaving the room to always leave someone behind in the room to guard the food. Over the years have lost half a red velvet cake (and quite neatly I might add), a large ham slice, some raw shrimp, a leftover NY strip loin (looked in the oven and fridge several times before I figured it out), stick of butter, and other stuff I've forgotten about.
  10. Keep a short leash. I was petite at the time--ha ha. She weighed 68 pounds. I'd only had Sheba for a couple months and really didn't know that much about her yet. I was walking her with a 6-ft leash and let her get to the end of it. Big mistake. She took off after a squirrel, I flew out of my shoes and into the air then smack down on the ground. Broken left humerous (upper arm). She was loose but I managed to catch up to her and grab the leash. We got home, I went to the ER, and all turned out well. Ever since then, she's on a 4-ft leash and I keep her close to me at all times. I'm always on the alert, too. I now know she has a high prey drive (squirrels, cats, skateboarders, small dogs, bicyclists, etc.)
  11. Perhaps contact Claire or Dennis Tyler, Greyhound Pet Adoptions of Central Florida, in the Melbourne area for recommendations, 321-242-9010 or cfgpa@cfl.rr.com or Carol Becker, God's Greyts Greyhound Group, in the Orlando area, 407-578-7493, godsgreyts@mac.com
  12. Perhaps a muzzle if around the small children?
  13. Perhaps muzzling might be a good idea if mingling with the guests?
  14. Sheba loves the 12-inch-thick Bully Sticks; because they're pretty expensive and she goes through one very quickly, I ration them out. She also loves the large Virbac C.E.T. Hextra Premium dental chews and gets one each morning after breakfast. When the Hextra chews were unavailable for some time, I got the Ora Clens chews, but she turned her nose up at them. She also loves the regular size Greenies and gets one every night after dinner.
  15. Agree with what Banjoman said. It might vary from rescue group to rescue group, but when I selected Sheba and had planned to go away for a week shortly after that, my group kept her until I returned from my trip. I signed the paperwork and paid the fee so they knew I was serious. Check with your agency to see what the options are.
  16. My friend's hound is a whiner, but mine is a barker. Personally, I'd rather have a whiner than a barker.
  17. I have no idea where Healthy Paws headquarters is located, but perhaps Hurricane Irma and aftermath in many states is causing a delay. Patience.
  18. She might not adapt to the daily crating; some take to it well, others don't at all.
  19. Welcome Lola! Can't wait to see pics and hear more about her settling in.
  20. Sheba has been eating this twice a day, day in and day out, for 8 years now: 1 scoop (about an overflowing cup) Purina One Chicken and Beneful Healthy Weight (mixed together for the 1 scoop) kibble A pinch of (jarred) chopped garlic (this little bit doesn't harm her) 3 tablespoons low-sodium chicken broth 1 tablespoon canned cut green beans, mashed up 1 tablespoon canned pure pumpkin 2 tablespoons canned chopped chicken or beef dog food (currently Pedegree) Lots of warm water until a sloppy mix Works for us. Poops are mostly firm but every now and then can be loose for various reasons.
  21. What a wonderful life of love and adventure she must have had! So sorry for your loss.
  22. I think I used to get Drontal from either www.petsuppliesnet.com or bestvaluepetsupplies.biz at about $72 or $75 for a 6-pack.
  23. No experience here, but after reading the various posts about separation anxiety, be prepared to have a possible setback after the move even if you get is under control before the move. Change of environment could trigger a revert back to SA for a while.
  24. Sheba will dig any chance she gets! Since my yard is river rock and patio stones, the only place she digs is around the plant where there's leaves, dirt, and lava rocks. It's not necessarily a greyhound thing, just a dog thing. Some just love to dig. At least it's only one spot and not all over the area.
