  1. I fogged/bombed the house last week--every room plus the garage. Much better for sure! I'll fog/bomb again soon to be sure. Dog not scratching anymore. Life is good. I'm also switching to Comfortis since K9 Advantx seemed to stop working.
  2. I was cautioned by someone not to give Comfortis and the heartworm med (Heartguard Plus is what I use) at the same time but 10 days apart. Is that so?
  3. I haven't had any flea problems in over 20 years but now have had them for a couple months, despite using K9 Advantix monthly. I assume the flea problems started because 1) I was in a rental unit for 2 months (Oct 7-Dec 1) while my home was under total renovation (all floors, ceilings, walls, kitchen) and Sheba picked them up there, 2) the fleas were always in my home and the renovation and Sheba and me being out of the house brought them out big time, 3) fleas have become immune to K9 Advantix, or 4) a combination of the three. I've been washing throw rugs and bedding and spraying Sheba and the rugs and bedding frequently. I've been delaying setting off indoor foggers and spraying the yard (no grass, just river rock and patio stones) in the hopes the washing and spraying will take care of things, but I still don't have it under control. So far, I'm not being attacked by the fleas. Should I change flea med brands? Change to what? I'm using Vet's Best Natural Health Care flea spray. What's the best flea spray for Sheba and rugs/bedding? I have Hot Shot indoor foggers (with Nylar, whatever that is) and Cutter outdoor yard spray that I haven't used yet. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  4. So cute. Sheba has a mohawk, too. Love it!
  5. I'm sure others will chime in, but Sheba sometimes does this, too, although not for 10 minutes. Sometimes when I massage (softly rub) her throat, it seems to help. She does it more after drinking water than eating her food.
  6. Oh boy do I feel your pain! Sheba chews on the inside garage door frame because that's the door I leave and enter, and only when I'm gone. I assume it's separation anxiety, and it's the only destruction she does and only when left alone. She doesn't chew there when I take care of my dog-sitter's greyhound, but I'm not at the point where I'll get another grey. I tried bitter apple, tabasco, and a couple other things to no avail. I didn't want to muzzle her everytime I went out, either, so I ended up putting a wrought-iron chair there to block her access, which did the trick. I recently had a new inside garage door installed and had them install a PVC door frame instead of wood in the hopes she wouldn't chew there--NOT! She chewed the PVC within 36 hours of installation. A friend of mine fabricated an aluminum strip, powder-coated white, to be placed over the chewed frame, and we're hoping that will do the trick. It hasn't been installed there yet because we're temporarily in a rental while my place is under renovation. BUT, at the rental, she now has chewed the bottom horizontal slats on the front-door blinds! I muzzle her in the rental now when I leave her alone (I should have anticipated it and been proactive. . .). Yes, try putting something bitter on the sills or see if you can block off the areas. Good luck!
  7. I've had Embrace since 2010 and have been happy with it. It can include a dental plan if desired that can be purchased as needed each renewal (Sheba typically only needs a dental every 2-3 years vs. every year). I suggest you review Embrace, Healthy Paws, and Trupanion for comparison and go from there re your final decision. My Embrace plan covers $5,000 maximum a year, has a $500 deductible, covers annual checkup, vaccinations, and Rx's, and covers 80% of the cost after deductible. There are other choice available. I pay about $35 a month but pay yearly to save a bit.
  8. I used to cook chicken necks in a pressure cooker for a long time so the neck bones could be eaten by my Great Dane. Not sure about bone-in thighs, though, since a pressure cooker might lose the moisture over a long time? I'd try the crock-pot for 24 hours and see what evolves. If not enough time, keep on cookin.
  9. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds like you'll let him off leash in an unfenced area once come, stay, etc. are mastered? What I've read here and been told by adoption agencies, you never let a greyhound off leash unless in a fenced area. Did I misundertand?
  10. This one really hit me hard as I had a similar experience with my old-lady Great Dane, Tina. I'd had her since a pup and watched her age as the years went by and since Great Danes typically don't live that long, I had to put her down at the age of 9 because of a similar diagnosis (cancerous sinus cavity tumor and numerous nose bleeds). She was my first, and best, Great Dane, and I think of pften and miss her to this day. Rest in peace Ice, and say hi to Tina for me when you happen upon her in your heavenly travels.
  11. Oh my, it never goes away, does it!? I'm so sorry for your loss (and guilt). Please know that she loved you very much and misses you just as much.
  12. Brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry for your loss.
  13. Sheba often does the same thing--from a raised water bowl--with no worries from the vet or me.
  14. Maybe the landlord would allow you to put up permanent fencing and discount your rent? Seems like permanent fencing would be an asset to the property. Of course, that might require a building permit, at least in my city.
  15. Sheba shakes all the time--when she first wakes up, gets up from lying down, jumps off the bed, turns around, etc. I attribute it to just feeling good.
  16. Just jumping in because I've haven't heard of this brand in the U.S. U.S. folks, is it available in the U.S. somewhere and if so, is it a good product? I'm interested in the responses you get.
  17. Sheba is used to my comings and goings although I'm retired and home a lot. She sometimes chews the door frame leading into the garage--where I leave and return--but not every time I leave. I figure it's the anxiety of my leaving and boredom, particularly when I'm gone over 3-4 hours. I'm living with it. Short of getting another hound, when I remodel, I'm going to get a PVC/synthetic door frame to hopefully curb that practice.
  18. I'd go with Dante, too. Sometimes the rescue group or kennel workers have given a hound a nickname, too, but it's not necessary to keep that name. My Sheba who is black was nicknamed "Mocha," and I just didn't see the connection (perhaps a tiny bit of fawn in the black?), so I went with Sheba. Congratulations on your new houndie!
  19. Others with much more knowledge than I will give better advice, but why not stick with the Iams and good poops and use somet sort of supplement for the coat?
  20. I love, love, love the goofy eye photos!
  21. I love the black hounds! Welcome new mom and welcome Moon!
  22. How about a muzzle (and poop guard if that doesn't work)?
  23. I'm not very familiar with Cane Corsos. Aren't they quite large and can tend to be rather protective or territorial? (Or am I thinking of Dogo Argentinos?) Wouldn't it also be a good idea to muzzle the Cane Corso in addition to your new greyhound for a while? I live in Cape Canaveral, and my friend with three greyhounds and Sheba and I meet at Cocoa Beach Lori Wilson dog park almost every Thursday at 12:30 pm (when there are only a few dogs there).
  24. Having had a Great Dane years ago that almost died from a steak bone caught in her throat, I say no to cooked bones, and I'm not a raw bone feeder so I'm a no-bones-at-all kind of pet owner. But that's just me.
