  1. Good luck that the antibiotics will do the trick!
  2. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. He was quite a handsome lad!
  3. www.petpoisonline.com says caffeine can be poisonous for dogs. Hope all turns out well.
  4. I get my Drontal Plus chewable flavor tablets from www.petsuppliesnet.com (no vet Rx required, out of Australia I believe): $74.95 + $5 shipping, 6 tabs per order, 136 mg each tab, 1-1/2 tabs (what my vet prescribed) for Sheba's (70 pounds) treatment. From that order giving 1-1/2 tab each treatment, you get 4 treatments. That comes to only about $20 a treatment. After getting the Drontal Plus at the vet the first time around and paying about $55 for that one treatment, I decided to have it on hand and purchased from www.petsupples.net. Saved a lot of money!
  5. I've never owned a horse and hardly ever been around one, but boy what a beauty he was! My heartfelt sympathies go out to you.
  6. I give Sheba Nawsomes from time to time, and Snausages and Pupperoni sticks are much like those. Just like we humans, moderation is the key
  7. Ever heard of this milk for dogs? Ever used it? Just curious since I've never heard of it. "MilkOPet, a lactose-free milk for dogs, is now available in the U.S. market. MilkOPet can be used to turn dry food into a highy palatable meal or serves as a treat by itself, with the benefit of providing enhanced hydration. Available in 8.45-oz (250 ml) stay-fresh packages, MilkOPet is being made available in veterinary clinics and hospitals, pet specialty stores and select online pet retailers in the United States and Canada." http://marketplace.dvm360.com/community/DisplayAd.asp?id=3130
  8. Sheba is a very snarky hound and always has been. She sleeps on the bed with me lots of the time but whenever I move (especially before sleep when I'm in bed watching TV or reading), she gets all snarling, growling, and snapping. I never touch her to soothe her, just say "no" and she typically either gets up, shakes, and goes somewhere else or circles round and round on the bed and takes another position. Some would say keep her off the bed, but it works for me. I'd just warn someone staying here taking care of her while I'm away to sleep in the guest room with the door closed:).
  9. I'm so very sorry for your loss of Jabari. I also lost a dog while out of town and know it makes the loss even worse because you didn't get a last goodbye. Know that he's at the Rainbow Bridge with Riley awaiting you,Puzzle, and Legs one day.
  10. I'm so very sorry for your loss.
  11. Sheba is an every now and then poop eater, but I'm lucky that I'm retired and home more often then not when she poops so I can immediately pick it up.
  12. Yep, seems to be pretty common.
  13. Having first had Great Danes, I always used a raised feeder, one that my father made for me out of an old wooden TV tray stand with cut-out holes for the bowls. Graduating to greys, I now have a lower-height wooden feeder that my brother made for me (like father, like son, rest their souls). I just think it's easier for the dogs. I travel with the bulky wooden feeder but plan on getting one that is collapsible so it doesn't take up so much space in the back seat of my Nissan Cube.
  14. That's about how much I pay monthly with Embrace, although I pay yearly. I never had insurance for any of my Great Danes until I had over $5,000 emergency treatment for my first greyhound in 2009. Because of that unexpected high cost (I had recently retired and it hurt!), I decided I would get insurance for Sheba when I adopted her at almost 2 years of age in 2010 and have had her covered ever since. My annual deductible is $500 so an accident or illness would cost me that much, but for any really big bills, I'm covered. I also have their basic wellness plan that covers up to $200 for annual vaccinations, exam, and meds and can opt for their wellness plus plan that covers dental when I decide it's needed from year to year (her teeth are greyt, so didn't need it this year).
  15. It's resource guarding,, and the experienced owners here will tell you how to handle it.
  16. A friend of mine gave her grey the large Everlasting Treat Ball that apparently keeps her grey busy for quite some time. I gave one to Sheba, but Sheba managed to get the treat out quite quickly. It might work for your grey, though. I got mine from www.kvsupply.com.
  17. Almost 5-year-old Sheba came through her first (for me) dental cleaning today. The vet said her teeth are in great shape with only minimal gingevitis. Lucky me to have a grey with good teeth! My Embrace Dental Rewards plan will reimburse the entire amount, so double lucky me since it was pretty costly.
  18. Yes, $0.99 a can vs. $1.49 Publix brand or $1.89 Libby's brand is just too much of a savings to pass up. I always stock up on pure pumpkin after Halloween and all during Thanksgiving and Christmas because they don't stock it in the off-season around here. I'm buying more and more Aldi off-brand items, because it really does save me lots of money. I find no fault with most of the items I buy (half and half, probiotic yogurt, cottage cheese, sliced deli cheese, Rotel-like canned tomatoes and chilis, Frendh-cut green beans (for the dog), canned sliced mushrooms, tomato sauce, canned diced tomatoes, mini cucumbers, red/yellow peppers, etc, except the quality of their paper towels is poor so I continue to get brands like Bounty, Brawny, and Viva at Publix because they are stronger. I don't buy much of their fresh meats but sometimes buy frozen seafood. Now when I make my shopping list, I first go to Aldi and then finish at Publix.
  19. In my zip code area, it's listed at $99, so 40% off of that is a good price. Perfect size, too. Add a nice cushioned, comfy pad with bumper sides all around that fits the crate size and you're good to go. Lots of sources for the pads--I think I got mine online at KV Pet Supply.
  20. Sheba cut her right hind foot--the skin between two toes. I cleaned it with Betadine, applied antibiotic salve, and wrapped with gauze and nonstick stretchy tape covered with a sock. I'll take a look at it tomorrow and do the same steps unless it looks worse, in which case I'll take her to the vet. I have three antibiotics on hand: Amoxicillin 500 mg (my Rx, filled 2007, and lots of capsuls) Cephalexin 500 mg (former canine Rx, filled 2006, and lots of capsuls) Baytril 68 (Sheba Rx, filled 2012, and only 4 tablets) Which one of these three should I give her and how often?
  21. And I add a heaping regular teaspoon of canned pure pumpkin to Sheba's food twice a day for digestive purposes. She typically poops twice, once before or after the morning meal and once after the evening meal.
  22. I personally like the name Storm or Stormy since he's a black hound.
  23. I agree that it really depends on the pup's personality. I got Sheba at 22 months, and at almost 5 years she's still a very hyperactive hound. Sweet as can be but very active. Of course, a lot of the mischeviousness probably is my fault though--ha ha!.
