  2. I agree, try just muzzling the aggressor when you're all together and see how that goes. I've done that with Sheba because she is snarky at times with other hounds at my house.
  3. A couple years ago Sheba and my house had a major flea problem even though on K9 Advantix, I flea-bombed the house (some wouldn't do that, but it worked for me) and changed to Comfortis. Poof, no more flea problems.
  4. I like the idea of the soaker coat. Or, you could hose him down with cool water before a short walk to keep him cooler--that's what a friend of mine does.
  5. And then you had to return to the store for more eggs!
  6. So sorry for your loss, but my, what a long, wonderful life he had with you. 14 years old--wow!
  7. I love the white and blacks, too. Glad Dennis let you drive some. Love that GPACF delivers hounds all along the east coast.
  8. I had a Magnadoor (hard plastic flap-type door with magnetic closure) installed when I enclosed my porch and my hound dog used it all the time, no problem. My first greyhound wouldn't use it and I typically bungee-corded it open when I was at work all day so she could go out to the side yard. (Nothing like heating and air-conditioning the outdoors.) Sheba wouldn't use it at first but when I muzzled her for a different reason, she started using the door and now uses it all the time. It's a somewhat noisy door and at night she often pokes her nose out a few times before going out and coming back in--of course that wakes me up every time, especially when she starts barking at whatever.
  9. I just love the black and white greys--reminds me of my black and white Great Danes in years past.
  10. Not knowing where you live and perhaps not understanding the circumstances, shouldn't Hester also have been on a leash? Twenty yards behind wouldn't have done much good in an attack, responsible owner or not.
  11. As others have said. It takes time. Re the dog park: I took Sheba early on when I got her because my first greyhound did so well with other dogs. Sheba not so much. She was bitten twice within a month--not attacks or bad bites, just nips--that required vet visits and one bite required stitches. Turned out she is an aggressive chaser and the other dogs weren't happy about it. She also chased the little dogs along the fence line (separate areas), which got other big dogs (and little dogs on the other side) excited and was an accident waiting to happen because they bumped into each other. I became a nervous wreck at the dog park watching her like a hawk, stopping the chasing, and worrying that something would happen. So, I don't take her to the dog park anymore for peace of mind for all. She's great with other greyhounds but not necessarily other dogs.
  12. I had no health records for Sheba when I adopted her at 22 months old other than her vaccination and spay paperwork signed by the vet. I didn't even get her checked out by my own vet since she was checked by another vet within the past 12 months. Embrace Pet Insurance readily covered her, except there was a 6-month hold period on any orthopedic issues unless I had an orthopedic exam, which I did not do. I don't believe I had to pay extra since I had no health paperwork on her but perhaps it was because she was still young. If you haven't done so, check with Embrace Pet Insurance. You can choose your deductible, annual maximum, percentage of Embrace coverage, etc. I've been happy with Embrace so far (since 2010).
  13. I'd try another groomer, perhaps with a muzzle on the dog just in case? Sheba won't let me trim her nails but has no issue with the groomer. Only costs me $5, too.
  14. It's quite obvious that Brucie was a much-loved family member. A lovely tribute.
  15. Her eye does seem to have a bluish film so perhaps it is nuclear sclerosis, but I'll wait until my vet examines her. I'll also see if there is a veterinary canine ophthalmologist in my local area in case a second opinion is needed..
  16. I have a vet appointment scheduled for various things but am concerned about something happening with Sheba's right eye. There's a cloudy film beginning to cover her eye. I tried to look up info on canine pannus and cataracts but never found photos of what they look like. Sheba is almost 7 years old and I just noticed the eye thing. Any photos of what canine pannus and cataracts look like?
  17. When I first got my hounds (one at a time), I didn't have an SUV, just a Nissan Sentra. I picked up my first hound alone and she did greyt riding in the back seat during the 30-minute ride home, very calm. Again arriving alone, my second hound was a terrible passenger--she was very stressed and kept trying to get into the front seat. I had to stop several times to get her into the back seat. After that, I bungee corded a metal barrier (the divider in a large dog crate worked perfectly) between the front and back seats and that worked fine, and then I removed the back seat and folded down the backs so it was flat and that worked even better. Now I have a Nissan Cube, and she rides nicely way back in the cargo area since I only have one hound now (two wouldn't fit in that space). Congratulations and best of luck with your new hound!
  18. I give Hearguard Plus to Sheba the first of every month and 10 days later give her the Comfortis chewable pill (with food, too). A greyhound rescue volunteer advised me to do it this way. and it works for us. Haven't tried Triflexis.
  19. I had a terrible flea problem on Sheba and in the house after moving out for 2 months last fall for a remodel effort. Between getting fleas at the rental and perhaps bringing them out at my house because of being gone and all the worker activity, despite using K9 Advantix religiously, I had greyt success switching to Comfortis and bombing the house with Hot Shot Bedbug & Flea Fogger with Nylar (got my 3-packs from Home Depot). One can for each room and bomb again after 10 days to 2 weeks. Follow the instructions. Have to be gone for 2 hours and ventilate the house upon return, but well worth it. No flea problems since then and still using Comfortis vs. K9 Advantix.
  20. I think Dylan also was telling you it was the right thing to do. I'm so sorry for your loss.
  21. My yard is all smooth river rock and walkway-placed patio stones. Sheba has no problem pooping and peeing on the rocks. I pick it up (also sometimes get some rock in the bag, too) and hose it in or dump water on the spot if sloppy.
  22. Use one of those X-pens I see discussed on this site?
  23. Agree with everyone. As one who has a greyhound that also chases and nips at other dogs and has had two large vet bills because of other dogs nipping back (not attacks, just nips to let my hound know they are frightened or don't like it), stay away from the dog parks. We still go to the dog park, but only when a few or no other dogs are there, and if the chasing and nipping is likely, I either leave or leash my dog. Sometimes we're lucky and only greyhounds are there, which is a lot of fun since they all get along. With no thick fur for protection and very thin skin, a nip on a greyhound can result in a laceration needing stitches and expensive vet care. It's an accident waiting to happen.
