  1. If ultrasound results are favorable and vet understands greyhound anesthesia, I would go for it. Removal of a hermangiocarcoma tumor from my Lurcher's spleen when she was 13 gave her two and a half fantastic years.
  2. But what a wondeful 66 days they were. It takes a fery special person to take in the oldies. Kudos to you for being Possum's special person
  3. Yep. Dental with all due precautions. He will feel sooo much better
  4. A friend of mine uses one of those small fishing nest for aquariums lined with a new plastic sandwich bag then transfers it to a sterile container. Very easy to slide it under bitch or dog without bending down so far as to distract them
  5. Playing a fan across a cooler with a block (not the cubes) of ice in it really helps when necessary.
  6. Batmom summed it up beautifully. If it is Oxalate then a prescription diet is not a great solution but a reduced oxalate / high moisture diet can work wonders. If they are struvite then they are more of a symptom than a cause.
  7. It is important to know what kind of crystals as that makes a huge difference to the best approach
  8. Given the severity and the location of the reaction, I wonder if she reacted to the diluent rather than the vaccine Very unusual (in the type of reaction) and very scary - glad she is on the mend.
  9. Absolutely - give the Benadryl. If you buy the liquid make sure it does not have Xylitol in it, Xylitol is being used in quite a few medications in place of other sweeteners. It is also important to be around to give a second dose at 8-12 hours after the first dose if required. If there was a reaction that was pre-empted by the Benadryl, it can surface again as the Benadryl wears off. If you know your dog is allergic to stings you need to carry an injectable. Pam
  10. Batmom wrote "Rest well" Not a chance - this gal is going to make the most of her "big adventure". A wonderful tribute to a hound well loved and a life well lived - albeit (or maybe especially) on her own terms
  11. Pragmatically speaking, better an under-dose than an overdose When I have had to use Doyx I have always used Fortiflora - never (touch wood) had any GI issues.
  12. Good vibes and healing white light from our bit of Canada
  13. I have to divide a 5mg capsule into five doses. I found that a piece of pegboard made a great support for my empty capsules (# 2 size).
  14. Dogs evolved as scavengers and the ability to eat carbs in the form of grains was part of that evolution. However, the grains of today may not be of the same quality as yesteryear grains. I do feed grains as part of their breakfast but I use organic grains such as barley and organic oats.
  15. The yahoo kidney group is terrific but you will need his blood test results
  16. I would definitely want a scrape and a culture. If it is ringworm or similar, antibiotics won't deal with the underlying problem. I have a friend who has been dealing with ringworm for months bought in by a cat from a rescue. It may be almost unnoticeable on some dogs but any that have an underlying immune problem or are stressed will often get reoccurring staph infections.
  17. The photo of him in the bluebell woods is just stunning. A beautiful setting for a beautiful boy.
  18. I have cooked up glutinous rice then measured it (usually 1/4 cup) into very lightly oiled muffin tins to freeze it. Once frozen, I sit the muffin pan briefly in hot water, pop out the "rice muffins" and bag them for the freezer. That way I can take out what I need to mix with whatever. I agree that adding a little water is necessary on defrosting.
  19. Forti Flora is an excellent supplement for dogs on antibiotics Pam
  20. I have seen the amazing difference a dental has made to a fifteen year-old dog. Risky yes but I was there when she went under and there when she came round. If you have a calming influence on your girl, you might request this concession.
  21. I agree, it seems so unfair to be going through this so soon after you and Daisy found each other. However, she is truly blessed in having you on her side. Many years ago (before chemo was available) our 13 year-old lurcher collapsed while we were 8 hours from home. The local E-vet did not inspire confidence and I opted to drive her home to my vet. She was on the operating table within minutes of us getting to the surgery. They removed her spleen and confirmed hermangio. She lived another two plus wonderful years before it came back and claimed her. Hermangio, like many cancers, hasn't read the statistics, it can be unpredictable in good ways as well as bad. I seem to remember something being posted here a while back about a particular type of mushroom and its benefits in treating hermagio. Wishing you much quality time with your girl.
  22. We get Metacam in liquid form so it is very easy to dose and adjust downwards when possible.
  23. I too would be interested in homemade toothpaste safe for a senior dog Pam
