  1. Cindy I'm so sorry for your loss. Run free sweet Dante.
  2. Gracie hate fireworks, thunder, and the kid drummer up the street. She paces, pants shivers, quivers and drools. I have used Ace in the past and had a frightened hound that could barely stand and was dangerous walking. Carl mostly ignores it and sleeps For the occasional pops and booms we've been having this week I've been giving Gracie 9mg Melatonin after dinner, she has a bed in the closet that she retreats to and is pretty OK. She will get up and come look at me then go back to the closet. Starting tomorrow she's getting Trazadone, and will stay on it until the 5th. Dr Heidi uses it for her dogs and swears by it, NO melatonin with it as they work very similarly. Our neighborhood has more profession type displays then some paid shows! Last year the kids down the street were making acetylene bombs! The fire dept does a yearly drive through ... it's NOISY. I block the doggie door, leave the AC on to keep it really cool, a fan in the bedroom, radio or TV
  3. Claudia I'm so sorry that Ekko had to leave, I know Misty was there waiting to help her cross the bridge. I'll miss reading about all her silly antics, but she will always be remembered for her sweet fuzzy face.
  4. Turkey necks vary so much in size that it's hard to answer. I get some pieces that are about 6 inches long and a good three plus inches across, that is a meal for mine. Some are the same 6 or so inches long but only about an inch and a half across ... light meal, big snack?? I feed more or less kibble in the next meal to even stuff out. I try to give turkey necks at least twice a week, chicken feet are pretty good too, more as a snack though. BTW, too much bone will really constipate a hound so if they start pooping rocks, back off on the turkey necks or give them some organ meat.
  5. I'm in Southern California and our summer days often it the mid hundreds, my two do most of their outdoor stuff either early or late but have been known to sunbathe out in the direct sun at over 100! Not for long, but they do it. I have a small hard plastic kiddy pool that I got at WalMart that I fill up for them to cool off in, or I use the hose and cool down their bellies and legs if they are panting too hard. We get into the 30's occasionally, but I've never needed a coat or boots. They are supposed to be lean, don't fatten him up too much, I'm sure your vet will give you some good advice. My male, Carl raced in Phoenix and Gracie finished her career in Caliente.
  6. I have been able to get turkey necks at my regular grocery store, I noticed that they carried wings and legs and asked if they could could get necks too. I had to request them fairly often at first but now they have them fairly regularly. I get chicken feet at a local Mexican market, they have a wide array of "unusual" cuts and organ meats.
  7. I'm so sorry that beautiful Sabrina had to leave, run free sweet girl.
  8. What a beautiful tribute Marc, thank you for sharing your beautiful Duchess with all of us.
  9. Marc what a beautiful tribute to a beautiful girl, I can barely see to type this. I'm so sorry for your loss, you know that she will always be remembered with love.
  10. What a beautiful girl, I'm so sorry for your loss. Dreamer will always a part of you, you carry her in a special place in your heart. When you're ready another grey will be ready to love you.
  11. I've never had a problem with dogs and oleanders, but they are poisonous and I've never left trimmings or pieces of branches or twigs around to be mouthed, my guys don't bother the callas either. Foxtails are a HUGE problem though, they get between toes, into noses and ears and burrow their way further in causing infections, surgical removal and vet bills! About the only way to get rid of them other than install a new yard is to spray with weed killer when they are still small, before they form the tails or mow them down and keep them mowed down, don't let them form the tails. Been there, done that. You have to keep ahead of them and don't let them seed.
  12. Deb, I'm so sorry. Run fast and free Maxi!
  13. What a beautiful girl! I'm a sucker for those beautiful white faces.
  14. Sounds like a muscle pull or strain, you know how they sleep with their heads hanging off of stuff or maybe he slipped on some shiny floor and pulled something trying to stay on all fours. Hope the vet says it's something simple Hang in there.
  15. Have you taken her to the vet? Maybe she's had a stroke or something, I would want some medical input before I made major decisions.
  16. I have been following Charlies story since his amp, he has been such an inspiration. I'm sorry so sorry, you and your family will be in my thoughts, skritches and ear rubs to Charlie.
  17. I add green beans to Carl's food, the trick is to smoosh them up a bit, I just use my hand and squeeze a couple of times. I use a fourth to half a cup of canned unsalted and mix in with his moistened kibble. Carl is like me and gains if you look at him cross eyed , this way he feels fuller and doesn't follow me around looking for hand outs.
  18. I'm so sorry, at least he knew he had you caring for him and feeding him at the end and he wasn't alone.
  19. What a wonderful tribute to two well loved girls. My heart goes out to you
  20. Run free sweet Izzy, you will be missed but you will never be forgotten, the love you gave remains in the hearts of those that loved you. We'll look for your star streaking across the sky tonight.
  21. I feed mine raw turkey necks ( not the smoked ones) as a meal or treat depending on the size of the neck, once or twice a week, t they occasionally get raw chicken quarters or chicken backs. Works really well as I have one that really builds up plaque quickly
  22. I'm so sorry for your loss. How wonderful that you had 9 years with him, that's an amazing life.
  23. Gracie Rose at 75lbs can have 9 mg 3 x per day, they really help her through the 4th of July and thunder.
  24. Both of mine learned to sit from the Sphinx or down position, I would hold a treat directly over their nose and click / say sit as they came up into the sit position. Gracie sits very prettily anyplace, Carl however, still comes up into a sit from a full down position .... unless he backs into his bed and sits his butt there like Nigel.
  25. The Mexican grocery store stuff usually doesn't have the enzymes, grass, fatty acids and other stuff still in it, it's been cleaned. Yes, it does perk up appitites, I just add it to kibble and mix it in with a little warm water to spread it around. I buy Tripett Original Green Beef and use a good sized spoonful or two, probably a little less than a fourth of a can between two hounds. I used to get a case at a time online, but found a local source, shipping gets expensive. You might try calling pet stores near you to see if they stock it or will get it for you, I found it at a little family run place. I do buy offal at the local Mexican market and mix that in, clean bowl every time ... Oh , chicken feet too ... they kill for chicken feet and it's a good source of glucosamine.
