Happy and bossy as usual.... but I'm still not sure if this is the right thing to do, even though "in my head" I think it's right. She turns 13 next month. Princess has developed a fast-growing, bleeding growth on one of her toes. To me, it looks like a ruptured mast cell tumor. Our vet has recommended surgery to remove the it. It's right underneath her toe nail, and now is growing out and over her nail, and so I agree that it needs to be removed. The vet tech said it looked like she was growing a brain on her foot. It went from nothing to huge in a matter of weeks....and bleeds if touched. We have to keep her foot wrapped to prevent it from bleeding constantly. Not good. Considering that she has to be put under to have this done, we think it makes sense to also do the tie-back surgery at the same time, which would help her laryngeal paralysis. She is doing well with the LP - she's had it now for several years and it's a slow progression. But this summer I noticed on the really hot days that she was having more raspy breathing than she had ever had before.... Add to this that the last time she went under a year ago for a quick 15 minute procedure, she was out of it for a solid two days. She acted like she was still under anesthesia for far longer than she should have, and the vet was very concerned about it (even though it was the same procedure he had used two years prior for her spay). Now she's even older and I hate the thought of putting her under again. I guess I'm just looking for other success stories and don't really have a specific question. Well, I do have the option to have her into the specialists in Boston over the local vet doing the surgery, but the specialists are two hours away and I'm not sure if that just adds to her stress. Tell them on the phone, tell them in person, attach a note to her collar, the works, so nobody forgets. They should be able to adjust protocol so as to minimize the chances of that happening again. Because of it's location, a HUGE amount of tissue would have had to be removed, and the chances that it would just grow back were too great for me to put him through it. I'm surprised that I didn't see anything about a biopsy? Seems to me that would be the first course of action--not surgery. I can hopefully reassure you that at Angell, they will have performed many surgeries on Greyhounds, what wtih the (former) two tracks up here. My last dog, a mixed breed, had major orthopedic surgery at Angell. I have always found the people there to be caring and very professional. Sambuca Posted November 2, 2010 Share Posted November 2, 2010 We had a standard poodle who had LP. He had 3 surgeries for it from 10 to 12 years old.
