PatricksMom
So my vet who allegedly has after hours service is flaking out, and last time I took Leo to the evet it was a disaster, so I'm reluctant to take him in if it's not necessary, but what do you think? • Dh and I finally got home tonight and realized between us Leo has been throwing up on and off all day • No distended abdomen, no pain when palpated • Pooping and urinating • Acting normally • Throwing up on occasion isn't abnormal for him • It's not likely he ate something he shouldn't have, but it's not impossible either. Do you think it's okay to wait until tomorrow for an X-ray / barium study or should I try my luck with the e-vet tonight, assuming nothing changes? If we don't take him in tonight, I'm definitely withholding food, thoughts on withholding small amounts of water? He currently can handle a small amount of water, free access causes throwing up. Thank you eta: otherwise a healthy, 6 year old. Edited July 19, 2016 by PatricksMom Quote Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). XTRAWLD
Tough pickle decision for sure. He is likely in the least dehydrated. Withholding food is a good idea. Puking immediately after drinking a lot is common for Ry too, so give water in spurts. I think in your situation, I would wait, but that's just me. Wonder what the cause is. Kasey once got violently ill after having a turkey neck, which previously was never ever an issue. Just happened to be the wrong day or something. The fact that everything else is seemingly normal to me, means that you can wait to see someone more trusted. PatricksMom
Thanks, to be fair, MY vet, is not the one on call, it's the owner of the practice tonight. He'll see my vet tomorrow. juliemac
If he's drinking 'normally', I would probably wait (and worry). If he's not drinking WELL, I'd go in tonight. good luck and keep us updated, please!
cleptogrey
How often is he vomiting? Diahreah as well? Does he have any interest in food, canned or boiled chicken? Let's think positively, gastroenteritis, maybe pancretitis something that will respond to less costly than xrays .try boiled wite rice with chicken, small amounts, plain graham crackers, bits of white bread. He most likely needs an antispasmodic or nausea drug and liquids .watch him outside to make sure that he is not eating grass. I agree with xtrawld, but if things go south do what you feel is right. BatterseaBrindl
What do his gums look / feel like? Pale? Tacky? If you press on them hard, then remove finger do they 'pink up' again quickly? What about his skin? Does it 'tent' and release quickly if pinched? Temperature normal? Quote Nancy...Mom to Sid (Peteles Tiger), Kibo (112 Carlota Galgos) and Joshi. NeylasMom
If the vomiting improves, wait until tomorrow. If it gets worse, go immediately. If it stays the same, I can't help you. Honestly, if he's truly been vomiting all day and isn't keeping down water, I would keep a very close eye at least. I might try small amounts of something with electrolytes like coconut water and see if he keeps that down. If he doesn't/seems dehydrated it might be worth going in just to get him some Cerenia and sub-Q fluids. PatricksMom
Gums, completely normal. Skin tenting, completely normal. Temperature is fine. He would eat, but I don't feel comfortable letting him. I think unless things go south, the plan is vet first thing in the morning, just to be sure. PatricksMom
Heard from the vet, blood work is all basically fine, except his pancreas levels are up and it's a bit inflamed, so he's going on anti-nausea meds and a broad-spectrum antibiotic. PatricksMom
No, he's been eating Costco Lamb and Rice for the last four years, good to know about the fish oil, I'll ask the vet about whether we should stop that.
