I haven't properly introduced myself yet. :)

I adopted my Winnie girl on November 1st. She has been settling in quite well, minus her making a whole lot of noise when I leave the house. We've got some obedience training coming to hopefully deal with her being home alone. I've filmed her, and while she spends most of her time snoozing, she does spend time looking for me out the window, around the apartment, etc. when I'm not there.

I was so happy to see her roach for the first time. :beatheart

She is a complete sweetheart, and even though I'm a anxiety-ridden wreck worrying about her, she has been doing well. I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions in the future as Miss Winnie is my first dog ever. It's just me and her against the world (jk).

Anyway, nice to meet you all and thanks in advance for all of the help!

I know she is, but I think what we both need is time to adjust. We haven't been all that long together after all. The obedience training will probably help me more than her. :hehe

Thanks everyone!

Winnie is doing well with our schedule. We still have some whining/howling/barking when I leave sometimes, but I'm slowly accepting it as my neighbors have not said anything and my apartment management loves her. :hehe Once she settles down after I leave, she sleeps most of the time. Today is day 2 of figuring out if coming home at lunch is too much of a stressor, though yesterday was exciting as we had our Obedience lesson with more than just me!

My anxiety is going down the more we have our training on our walks and such. We're learning how to "take a bow" instead of "sit" for when she wants to go out, eat, get attention, play, etc. She's smart, I'm sure she will get it soon! :beatheart

Welcome to your tuxedo beauty! I've taken almost all of mine to obedience classes -- it does give me more confidence. And more self-discipline to work/play with them.

You might want to be proactive with your neighbors and tell them that you are working on the barking/whining. They'll be less likely to complain that way, plus may have noticed things about her activities after you're gone that would be valuable to you.

<<We're learning how to "take a bow">> Someone here on Greytalk once taught her hound to do that in her direction with "Bow to the queen." Annoyed her husband somewhat. :)

LOL! Yes, so far she is doing great. We had some excitement this morning when a running group wanted to say hi to her so she jumped from person to person. Definitely something we need to work on is how we greet people...and always allowing the people to greet first before she does. The obedience trainer comes to my home, which is awesome for our development and learning to behave when people come over.

Yesterday she was quiet both in the morning and in the afternoon after I left, but we'll see how she does this morning after all the excitement. I tried to settle her down after our walk by running through some of our walking exercises so she was paying attention to me. "Heel", changing directions and the like. She is a puller, especially when she gets excited.

Tonight, this weekend, and the Thanksgiving hols should be a good test of what happens when we go off schedule and I leave at weirder hours/for random times instead of the 4 hours or so between leaving for work/home for lunch/work/home. I'm finally feeling okay with leaving her at home and I know she's going to be okay - so all of the obedience will come with time!

We have a short attention span for obedience lessons. :hehe 2 minutes per session. She likes to "take a bow" not on command now and looks at me like, "treat, plz?" Silly girl. During our obedience time, I start with luring her with the treat, click, treat, "good!", do that 3 times or so then try just try "take a bow" with a "good!" at the end once or twice more. We haven't yet figured it out away from the chair and sometimes I get "down" instead, but I'm enjoying the structure of teaching her! We still need to learn to look at me when I say her name too. Bahahaha. More clicker training!

Hello, and greetings from North Texas! I also adopted a black girl grey a few months ago, though yours has a whole white undershirt going on. Pepper showing off her white spot: http://imgur.com/0iwlrA1

Neat that you're trying obedience training. I study biology and have a background in animal behavior, but I see my own training limits from time to time. Pepper will jump up when I come home out of excitement, and that's going to be a hard habit to break. She also redecorates when I'm not home, but I think that's pretty typical grey behavior. Depending on the situation, Pepper will also whine and bark out of anxiety when she can't keep track of me. It doesn't happen nearly as often anymore at our house (I live with roommates), but sometimes when I've brought her to someone else's house and step outside she goes on red alert.

I haven't trained Pepper to accept treats. She likes being petted enough that it's her reward for doing something good. This helped her learn her new name very quickly (old name was Jennifer - weird name for a dog, imo). Now she comes trotting in when I call her name from across the house or on the other side of a field.

Glad to hear she does well in an apartment. I'm in a house now, but who knows about the future. Keep us posted with how Winnie is doing :)

Will do!

I've been posting a bit about her Separation Anxiety and while it isn't bad, I think she is just learning how to be alone and settling in. Hiring a dog walker at lunch was a change that she needs to adjust to.

We're doing quite well otherwise with our walks, training, etc. She most often roaches after our walk in the afternoon and before dinner. We've been learning how to take a bow with a hand signal vs a treat and bowing to earn pets, before we go out on walks, feeding, etc.

Still establishing a schedule and making sure she is okay with me leaving at random moments or at night if I have to is the future challenge. She is still stressed after I leave for 10-30 minutes but settles down after that.
