Guest astritle
Please send good thoughts Marco's way today as he's undergoing his dental and multiple extractions today! His vet says he doesn't know how many extractions until they get in there, but I'm worried about my boy. We adopted him back in March and knew he already had severe peridontal disease (gums receeding and multiple tooth roots visible) at the time, but we've been trying to hold off on surgery. He's been through several rounds of antibiotics. Love you, buddy, anxiously awaiting the call from the vets when he wakes up! And of course I misspell his name in the title....oops! Guest astritle
Update: He's out of surgery and resting comfortably in his crate! His mouth is understandably sore. I was so elated to hear he's okay that I forgot to ask about how extensive the surgery was. I pick him up in an hour so I'll find out then, but the important part is he came through with flying colors! Thanks for the positive thoughts, everyone! Guest astritle
We're home now. He's resting on his bed but hasn't slept yet. Final count is 28 teeth removed!! He has 12 now - all his canines and major molars. He's understandably tired and a little woozy, but not whining at all. Will not take any water, so I've given him a few mililiters of water from a syringe both to wet his tongue and help remove some of the clots/secretions. Poor guy. But we're so happy to have you home and hopefully you'll start to feet a lot better without all those yucky, painful teeth!

EllenEveBaz
Are there cases where the dog becomes unable to chew kibble? No (mostly). Some people will add water or soft food to their toothless dogs' kibble, but as I understand it, large dogs don't really chew kibble, they just gulp it down. As long as the gums aren't damaged or still diseased, once the gums are hardened up the dogs shouldn't have trouble with kibble. Once Marco feels up to it, ice cream will make everything much, much better. Followed by toothbrushing, of course. Guest astritle
Thanks, everyone! Today has been a much brighter day. Ate both breakfast and dinner (kibble soaked in little bit of water for 10 minutes with some yogurt) with no trouble. Last pain pill was 7am and he's been comfortable since then, acting like his old self since this afternoon. No more ucky bloody secretions. Great job, Marco!! Riverhound
That's wonderful! I'd keep doing pain meds, cause they're stoic (and dumb), YMMV. Quote Masterful Joe and Naughty N Nice
Guest astritle
Thanks, Riverhound! We did end up doing the pain meds for a bit longer because he's so stoic. He's definitely back to his usual self and is doing greyt!
