robinw
Iker has a very prominent scar that goes all around his neck (he was hanged in Spain). It's always been bald, but I just noticed that it is starting to get kind of scabby. Any guesses as to what could be causing this? The weather has been very cold and dry, so maybe it's the lack of humidity? Anyway, do you think it would be a good idea to start applying a cream, such as Vitamin E, to it? Does anybody have any suggestions? I had been using cream in the past, but have stopped. The scabbing kind of concerns me. thanks Quote Xavi the galgo and Peter the cat. galgomum
If that is the only place where he is getting scabby then yes, I would start applying something to moisturize the skin. Vitamine E should work or maybe coconut oil. Quote ~SAGE~ Save A Galgo EspañolPetra Postma Photography

Guest grey_dreams
What do the scabs look like? Is it possible to post an image? Reason I ask is because I'm kind of paranoid about melanomas and hemangiosarcomas since Zariel got the first one. They start off looking rather innocuous, like small scabs. queenwinniesmom
Robin, I was just talking to a woman at the eye doctors today who has 22 year old Pit Bull! Yes, 22. She said he had horrible dry skin, after demodectic mange. There were scabs that were still healing, and she used aloe vera on them, and it cleared them right up. I've never used this---though I'm tempted with Lydia and her dry skin---but it might be something you could try. Aloe vera is what the vet recommended when we were trying to get Doc's elbow to heal up, post-haematoma. It is moisturising, and also encourages skin elasticity. You need proper aloe vera gel, not just a skin lotion or whatever which 'contains aloe vera'. I rubbed a bit of it into Doc's scabby, baggy elbow two or three times a day and it worked a treat - now you would never know there'd been a problem. What a sweet boy Iker is . It is lovely to see him so relaxed on your sofa, after the trauma of his earlier life. He is one lucky dog! DofSweetPotatos
We used A&D ointment on old scars. Seems to help a bit. I'm guessing it's the dry cold.

krissn333
I'd feed him some coconut oil and also apply some directly to begin with. Coconut oil is so awesome! XTRAWLD
I'd feed him some coconut oil and also apply some directly to begin with. Coconut oil is so awesome! Was going to be my suggestion too :-) I've heard of coconut oil. How is it consumed? Is it in pill form or an additive to food like veggie oil for example? I'd vote for dry as well, the dander coming off of Kasey is incredible, and it's been really cold and dry here in Ontario too. When Kasey scabs (for whatever reason), I usually just use some CS to make sure it doesn't get infected and it heals up pretty good but that doesn't necessarily resolve the dryness problem. I've never found a topical solution though. I wonder if just some human hand cream would work? We use bottles of it in the winter on us.....couldn't be that bad for the hound....could it? DofSweetPotatos
Coconut oil is solid at room temp. Scoop it out with a teaspoon. We use Nutiva extra virgin coconut oil. It's inexpensive and found in our local grocery. Also, I just plop a teaspoonful on top of his food. He eats it right up. krissn333
Mine will eat a dollop right off of the spoon but usually I just stir it into their kibble. Nutiva is good...I like the Trader Joe's coconut oil too. Make sure you dont buy the kind that says "refined." It's gross.
