Fudge
I'm getting panicky here. I've been through osteosarcoma with Smokey, he was 14 and it was in his shoulder. My 9 year old, Cal, started limping several weeks ago. First round of carbuprofen seemed to get a little better so we are continuing to a second round and it is not helping at all. Next is xrays. I believe his pain is in his wrist. Can osteosarcoma be in the wrist?

Jiffer
Yes, it can. I've seen tumors the size of grapefruit at the wrist joint. Sorry to have to share that as bad news, but in some cases, if you're considering amputation, the wrist is one of the better places for it to be since it's farther away from their body. Sending prayers and healing white light. Perhaps he is just not responsive to carbuprofen? joejoesmom
Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). There are a number of different NSAIDs available such as Rimadyl and Deramaxx. However, it can be dangerous to switch from one to the other, often it is necessary to do a wash-out period, where you don't give any NSAID. The vet might also prescribe tramadol, which is an opiate-like drug. I would get the leg x-rayed. Unfortunately osteo most likely appears in the shoulder area, the wrist area or the knee area. However, pain in the wrist could be a number of different things. But an x-ray will help determine if it is bone related (osteo or a fracture) or soft tissue related. It could also be arthritis. Although it sounds like you feel it is in the wrist, is it possible that it is a corn? Jane
Fudge
I quadapruled (sp?) checked his pad. I don't see anything. My vet is closed now. I will call tomorrow for an estimate on the xray. I just spent a load at the ER last week with Jackie (greymix) she passed away
Neighsayer
My friend's dog started limping, and several weeks later developed a small lump at the wrist. Osteo confirmed in October. The lump is now the size of a golf ball. He has been doing ok on small amounts of pain meds so far. He seldom limps or favors that foot at all. I would go for X-rays to keep myself from going crazy! greysmom
Even if you opt for palliative care/pain management only there are tons of options fro you to try. I encourage you to take a look at the first post in the Osteo Thread. There are many links for information on almost every aspect of dealing with this horrible disease. There are also many kind and generous people there to help support you going forward. robinw
Don't panic until you have facts, ok? I lost Phoenix to osteo a couple of years ago and I thought for sure that Treasure had it, but today's X-rays were beautifully normal. My advice is to get X-rays to rule it out, ok? GeorgeofNE
what else is there to try besides carbuprofen? Just get the x-rays. If it's good news, you'll be thrilled! If it's bad news, you need Tramadol and probably Gabapentin Even around here, where vet care costs a fortune, a couple films of the lower leg are not expensive. They should not need to knock him out, so it should be quick and not expensive. Edited March 27, 2013 by GeorgeofNE Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Charlies_Dad
Agreed. X-rays are first, try not to worry too much (I know A LOT easier to say than do). We'll all hope it's nothing serious. TwiggysMom
Also recommend x-rays for the peace of mind, if nothing else. Here, where vet costs are quite high, I believe Twiggy's initial x-rays were between $250-$300. (I laugh now at how little that was compared to the 10X that much I often have spent per month since). Twiggy's osteo was in her distal radius - just above her wrist joint. One thing I've read about osteo is that it doesn't cross a joint. So, if there is something suspicious in between the joint, or on both sides of the joint it is probably either not cancer or a less sinister type of bone cancer than osteo. I'm sending out healthy non-cancer thoughts for Cal! As soon as she screamed with pain while running, off to the vet for x-rays. Horrible hateful awful disease.
