What Exactly Is "iam's Green Bag" Food?

Recommended Posts

we're still having horrible D with Zeke -- he's going to get a dose of Drontal Plus this weekend if it's not better, then more Panacur (he has hooks) next week according to the vet. However, I am wondering if the Canidae (all life stages one) is just not the right food for him. Nube did great on it, Larry does ok (has some soft poops but nothing like Zeke's D) -- but I searched here for "diarrhea" and so many people swear by Iams "green bag" but I don't know which actual formula that is?

TIA!

It has cleared up my hounds. I messed up and got the very small bits, but it is OK with both of mine. Next time I will buy the chunks. I have tried feeding the very expensive to the very cheap dog food. I have wised up and feed raw and Iams. No more changing dog foods. I am not a dog food snob anymore..LOL

we don't know if the D is from the hookworms, his diet, or what. Right now he's just getting 1/2 cup of the Canidae All Life (PAWS) and the rest is brown rice, oatmeal, pumpkin and cooked beef and it's just short of explosive. The vet is putting him on 5 days longer of Flagyl and added Flori - something (probiotic). He's lost a LOT of weight. :(

Magic!! The ingredients are magic. I was a dog food snob, too. A friend attended a pet nutrition seminar and the vet had good things to say about IAMS.

Since he has hooks and i think you previously said he was getting Panacur and Flagyl, his stomach is very torn up from the worms.

We have been dealing with similar issues with Rocket since Nov / Dec timeframe.

We tried the green bag and it only worked for a few days before he was back to having diarrhea. I think his stomach was just too inflamed from worms to handle much food.

After the Panacur treatment, we switched him to smaller feedings 4 times per day instead of regular feedings two times a day, and NO TREATS were given. If he needed a treat, he got a few pieces of the same kibble we were feeding him for dinner. It took about a week and a half, but he went back to having rock solid poop. I

In the past when we've had to do chicken and rice or similar diets for him, we also stretch that out to 4 smaller feedings. It seems to work much better than feeding him only 2 times a day. I think when the stomach is inflamed like that, 2 feedings is just too much food to process without much of it becoming liquid.

We spaced out his feeding times to 8 AM, Noon, 5 PM, and right before bed between 9 and 10 PM. He seemed to get better faster that way, and we were able to go back to his original kibble with no problem whatsoever. The late feeding also had the benefit of not having him wake up in the middle of the night with stomach squeals.

Forti Flora? Dudley also had terrible D. The Forti Flora seemed to clear it up over night, and ever since we switched to the IAMS we have not had to use the forti flora :)

that's the stuff :) smells pretty good, too, I thought.

I just feel so bad for him, he's gotten SO skinny (and Larry looks like he's put on 5 lbs! He's a porker) and I just want him better. Hopefully things will improve, and quickly.

If you like the mini-chunks, don't feel you have to use the large breed just because greyhounds are... well... large. Their mouths don't match their body size anyway. Maybe in volume with some dogs! :) Summer doesn't really care for big chunks of stuff so she gets the mini-chunks since she prefers it.

Might try ratcheting his food back to just overcooked (extra water) white rice and beef for 4-5 days and see if things improve. Once his innards feel better, you'll have more luck choosing a good kibble for him. :)

ETA: White rice rather than brown because it just goes through a dog better. I know some folks like oatmeal, too, but it's never produced anything here but vomiting and/or diarrhea. YMMV.

I actually did try that first but didn't see a difference, and the vet wants to give the kibble since he's been on not-as-nutritious foods (just starches) for over 2 weeks now :( and he's lost so much weight. :(

ah, ok I thought brown would be better. Figures, I bought 4 2 lb bags of it since it was on sale last weekend :( I don't know if the oatmeal is making it worse or not. :(

Gotta go with your & vet's gut (ha ha ha) but FWIW, I've had adult dogs on bland diets for a couple of months. As long as they get enough calories and protein, the rest of the nutrition doesn't matter so much. Couple months is still short term. Puppies you'd need to be more careful.

Iams green bag is not that great of a food honestly. And that's my opinion, and other people will have their opinion. I would try a limited ingredient diet. Possibly natural balance? I also swear by the Honest Kitchen "Perfect Form" powder. Many dogs don't handle probiotics very well or digestive enzymes. My two dogs are examples of that. Perfect form is a natural herbal supplement that calms the digestive tract and helps firm up poop. Edited by 2greys2cats

Pumpkin gives my dogs explosive diarrhea as well. I would try limiting his ingredients.

You can still use the brown rice as long as you overcook it and then put it through a blender until it's smooth - they can digest it that way :) .

I love when the "best food" conversations get going. :flip I've tried several foods and keep going back to Iams. It is what works best for my dogs. Others have found other brands that work for their pups. I believe every dog has a food that works best for them. Iams does help pups who have loose stools; all kinds of posts about it on here. You will have to make the decision that is best for you pup.

I sure hope he gets feeling better soon. It is so hard to watch them loose weight or be sick. Sending good thoughts that you find something that will help soon.

The best food for your dog is the food that maintains his weight and prevents the big D.

The best food for your dog is not necessarily the food that works for my dog.

Iams green bag is not that great of a food honestly.

For being 'not that great of a food' my guys have formed stools, no gas, great teeth, and shiny coats on IAMS. And that's much more than I can say for the handful of other premium/limited ingredient/organic/grain free foods we tried beforehand. An overall picture of health means more than an ingredient list, IMHO.

We tried everything from limited ingredient dry kibble to richer dehydrated food and nothing worked for us until we tried IAMs green bag. I'll get the large kibble or small kibble and don't have issues with either. It's what worked for our dogs and it's better on the pockets too (just an added plus!). I had fought trying it because I thought from everything I read that it was a "bad" dog food, but it honestly keeps our dogs happy and healthy which is all that matters to us!

Could he have IBS?

My guy had hooks as well and the 2 rounds of meds the vet gave him, 10 days apart, got rid of them.

My guy is one that did not do well on the green bag, his poops were soft-serve and the gas was just too horrendous to continue, but I think the main reason for that is the green bag, if I remember, is chicken based, and he doesn't do well with chicken.

The discussion on food came up at Mountain Hounds. The grey-savvy vet said Iams green bag was perfectly fine. He was not a big fan of the fancier stuff. I think that was more because of the hype than the food's content.

I feed Grace, guilt free, the Iams green bag small kibble.

Iams in the green bag solved our 'runs' and has also helped their coat & skin. I tried every expensive brand previously with no success. I decided to try it based on the advice from GT. We have all been happy since. Iams is also easier on the pocketbook!
