Bucky

Bucky came to us in 2009 when his former owner had a life crisis that left her unable to keep her two greyhounds. Bucky had a bite history, space issues and a fear of men that earned him the label “unadoptable” by the adoption group - he had been saved from euthanasia at that time by the woman who ended up placing him with us. So, when she fell on hard times, he did not have the option of being returned to the original adoption group. The group told her that we sometimes took in troubled or end-of-the-line hounds, so she reached out to us in desperation to find Bucky a home - and, of course, we agreed to foster them while she put her life back together. I fell in love with Bucky the instant I saw him. His energy was strong and proud. His gently greying face had a soft smile on it as he glanced around, trying not to look unsure.

The foster arrangement turned in to a forever arrangement after about 6 months. Bucky was a perfect fit...he was a happy, go-lucky hound - determined and proud. One of those dogs that when he would set his mind to something and he was going to do it. He loved the pack. He got along with everyone...and for a dog who didn't like men, I found him crawling up into the bed with Ken within a couple months. We saw some space issues early on, but once we earned his trust, that trust was complete and he showed no hesitation with us coming near.

At 12, Bucky came to us with an old body. He had a lot of hind-end weakness and couldn't control his bowels. Our vet did a full exam, xrays, you name it (several times) and there wasn't really much that could be done. We controlled his pain as necessary and made sure he got plenty of exercise to keep his muscles as strong as possible for as long as possible. However, the last few weeks have been a pretty rapid physical decline...he required more and more assistance from us for day-to-day living...and yesterday, he couldn't stand. For such a proud dog, not being able to get up on his own or walk without assistance was very distressing...which was heartbreaking for us.

With a heart full of love, we said goodbye to our friend Bucky yesterday afternoon. Thankful for the time we had together, though it was far too short.

Heather, I'm so sorry you had to let Bucky go. It's wonderful that you gave him a soft place to land when his options were limited, and it sounds like he repaid that kindness every day that he was with you.

I'll be thinking of you and your pack.

So sad to read that Bucky has crossed the Bridge. You and Ken were certainly his Earth angels, thanks for giving him a loving home to spend the balance of his days in.

I am sorry that you had to make this decision but as you say he was a proud pup and not being able to get up and walk would not be acceptable to him. Thank you for giving him a loving home.

Run free Bucky, run free... :gh_run
