Berk is out of surgery and awake. :)

Vet will call tomorrow with his status. Tonight he'll be kept pretty out of it. But no complications and it all went smoothly.

I forgot! Sorry!

Dude had a massage today. He is sleepy and energized at the same time afterwards!

Thanks guys!! It was a long day, for sure, but he was in good hands and he's one tough cookie. The house is so damn quiet without him, I can't wait until he's back.

I'm SO happy to hear it went well!!! I haven't been on GT since last week so I hadn't seen your post about it being today. He's in great hands there. When will he go home?

Take the time to sleep now, even if you think you can't. Also GO SHOPPING! You won't be able to leave him alone for a week or so at least.

Think about how you might need to rearrange your house to make things easier on everyone. Do you need a ramp outside? Enough dog food? Rice and boiled chicken?

Do you have a support harness like this Ruff Wear Web Master Harness ? It's very useful for helping to steady him as he's learning to manage things with only three legs. It's also very handy to tie a cone onto. Thread a long piece of gause through the holes on the cone and tie it to the harness - it stays on MUCH better than trying to keep it just on his head.

There was a thread several weeks ago where people listed all the things to think about. I'm not sure I remember what it was called, but it would be good to look it over.

Don't bring him home too soon. Three or four days at the earliest, unless where he is doesn't have 24/7 monitoring.

All good stuff. I'll see if I can find the thread, too.

We are already set up pretty well for impaired dogs as we fostered broken leg dogs and had a 13 year old with back end issues - so we have a first floor bedroom, rugs everywhere, ramp into the the yard, etc. We're going to add some dirt to the end of the ramp so that it's not so much of a step down, too.

We already have a harness too.

How necessary is the cone? Previous experiences with Berkeley and cones - it FREAKS him out totally. I have a muzzle with a stool guard that I will usually use. Good enough?

He should come home Saturday if he does well today. They want him eating and moving around on his own a bit first. Knowing him, home will be much better for him, even if it might be tougher on us.

We are going food shopping today and I have ground beef in the freezer that I plan on defrosting and making some homemade meatloaf for him. :)

We have a pen that we've used with other dogs that needed R&R - do you think it's a good idea to have this set up for him? He loves his crate and at least with the pen, we can help him in and out as needed. (That's Hunter, my foster, recovering from an FCE)

No need to apologize! :)

Glad Dude enjoyed his massage again today.

Osteo Thread, Part III is up and running. I'll ask the mods to close this one. If you'd like me to add any information or links to the first post, please let me know, or feel free to follow up immediately with your own post. It's pretty much the same information as before, but I updated the OSU info to reflect their new online consultation system.
