Guest TheUnrulyHound
I know that I cannot start a topic with Nelson in the title and get away with not posting a pic so here he is with is "catch of the day" AKA pile of collected stuffies Anyhow, Nelson has pannus. This is not new, he has drops that I put into his eyes two times daily. I am wondering if I should have some doggles for him though? If your hound has pannus do you use them? What SIZE do you have???? Does your hound tolerate them? I am not thinking that he needs them every day, the yard we let the hounds out in is shady most of the time but for the times that we all go outside and lounge around I think it would be useful. I am also contemplating taking him and Bully to the GALT birthday party where I will be vending in May. I would think that they would be good for him to have if it was sunny (I have a tent for cover but you never know) so, for those of you who do not have a hound with pannus or a pair of doggles..... have some fun and tell me what color my pretty boy needs? and do you think Bully needs a pair too? Here is a pic in case you forgot what he looks like Both Bully and Nelson have matching Olive Drab (military green) collars which is why camo is an option Any other tips for owning a pannus hound? GreyTzu
I do not have a pannas dog. However when I was taking JD, a 'Tzu, to the doggie eye Dr. I asked about them. Our Dr. said he felt they can cause drying of the eyes and did not recommend them for extended wear. Before JD's eye issues, I bought a pair for Donner and he hated them. Donner's were a medium size. GreytNut
We wanted to adopt a pannus dog, but the group wouldn't let us have him because at the time we lived at 7,000 feet in the mountains. Apparently elevation greatly aggravates pannus. So that's something to keep in mind if you like to go up to the high country. EllenEveBaz
No pannus dog here, but I did buy a pair for Bazzy Bear to wear in the car since he liked his head stuck out even at highway speeds. Baz was 31" at the shoulder and had a loooong face, but even he just took a medium. I think the large size is for dogs with very wide heads. Bazzy's were chrome, but I think on your boys' white faces something darker would contrast better. I voted camo. Our Dr. said he felt they can cause drying of the eyes and did not recommend them for extended wear. Wendy, did the vet explain how they can cause drying? I'm interested because I have severely dry eyes, myself. Maddiesmom
Holly, Maddie has a pair, I bought them for fun, We had a large pair and they were too big. So I gave them to another hound owner. We got the medium and they are just right. We have them in black. I also was going to use them in a costume contest as her as a "construction worker showing "but crack" at Mountain hounds one year" I bought a little tool belt thingy from home depot but we showed up late to the costume contest. She tolerates them well. Edited April 25, 2010 by Maddiesmom Quote Amy Human Mommy to fur baby Maddie (Doobiesaurus) TDI certified. Guest TheUnrulyHound
Thanks guys I was having the biggest issue with sizing.... I am glad to hear of a few that have had them before Amy I have GOT to see some pics of Maddie in her doggles!!! I am not sure how doggles could cause drying of the eyes?? I would thing that they would hold moisture in and keep the wind from drying the eyes out but I am not sure, maybe there is a reason I am not thinking of Anyone else care to vote before I order tomorrow? Hubcitypam
We had them at the daycare and every dog we sold them to seemed to hate them so needless to say we only sold them for a brief period of time. I think chrome looks very cool and dignified.
gryhndsr4us
We had a pair for my bridge pup Clark. The size was medium. He tolerated them on walks. Guest TheUnrulyHound
Well I am looking into ordering and it seems that the only options that are available in medium are the racing flames The red is also an option I would accept. Guess that screws up my poll oh well looks like the flames are winning anyhow!
Devotion
medium here. Hot pink for Avril, she tolerates them well. I only put them on her if she is out in the sun for more than a few minutes. she adores being outside. The sun's UVA and higher altitudes make it worse they say. We have a home in the mountains and frequent. Never been a problem. inugrey
I can not think of a grey that I have met who was OK with wearing the doggles. A friend's dog has pannus but hated his two pairs of doggles so I got a pair of the flames as a hand me down. Her boy never wore the doggles willingly so she didn't force the issue. He got his drops but didn't wear the doggles. Inu does not have pannus but has this weird iris deterioration problem so he is losing his ability to filter out light and even on cloudy days will squint. I tried using doggles for him. He'll tolerate them for a limited time before he paws them off. I wonder if his problem is that there is no peripheral vision with doggles. I am considering the K 9 Optix to see if he'll tolerate them instead. Just for you to see, here is a picture of Inu in the flames. Guest greytkidsmom
Our Tiel-girl was diagnosed with Pannus in January. The diagnosis was confirmed with a veterinary ophthalmologist at Virginia Tech. He brought up the topic of doggles and told us that he didn't feel that they were necessary where we live. You may want to touch base with your local vet or specialist. I vote for the camo-colored ones for Nelson if you choose to get some for him. Guest JudiK
I have two boys with pannus. Pear is a smallish boy - medium Doggles are too small for him and large Doggles are too big. He hates them, and tries to rub them off on everything that we pass - so the fact that they don't fit is the least of our problems. Thor is a big boy and the large pretty much fits - but he is afraid of them. He thinks that they are some torture device that I attach to his head and that soon I will activate them. He tries to run away from them, shake them off, rub them off and knock them off with his front paws. The rhythm of our walks with Doggles goes something like this - step, whack your head, step, whack your head, step, frantically rub your head on Mom, step, rub, rub, step, whack, step, step, whack, rub... times two if I have both boys in Doggles. We have a big fenced in yard and I just watch how long I allow them out in the bright sun. During the times of day when the sun is bright, I stay with them and call them back in as soon as they do their business. See a veterinary opthamologist once a year and give them their drops religiously. Both of my boys have excellent vision despite the fact that they hate their Doggles. Guest Whistle
Stopper has pannus and I bought doggles after they were recommended by the vet. He tolerates them pretty well. I started out just showing them to him and maybe having them looped around my wrist as I petted him. I then would try them on for just a few seconds at a time while giving him a high-value treat and praising him and telling him how handsome he was. We eventually worked up to him wearing them without seeming to care. Our backyard is very shady, so he does not wear them every day. I probably wouldn't have gone to the trouble, but he is a wonderful M&G hound and I didn't want to be limited on where I can take him. I called the company before we ordered and was told that most all greyhounds would be a size medium. That is what we got for Stopper, and they fit great. He has the "ice" because most of his collars have cool colors in them. I think the racing stripe flame ones would look great on Nelson . Guest BorzoiMom
I would match the collar. They make visor hats for dogs too I think. Also look into a fly mask for dogs? I don't know that they actually have them, but I bet a foal or mini would fit. We would use a fly mask when treating eye injuries on horses with atropine (dilated the pupil). I'm interested because I have severely dry eyes, myself. Ellen, he did, but it was a long time ago and I'm not sure I remember it all. Something about them fitting tightly around the eyes and inhibiting air flow. This was right before JD lost his eye, so we had other concerns going on at the time also. JD had an eye infection from, I am 99.9% sure, a thorn stick at Sandy Paws. He ended up being diagnosed with high blood pressure and early renal failure, both of which can cause eye issues. The eye became more infected and we felt it was better to remove it. He did very well after surgery and with meds. and some holistic care. I am a dry eye person also and should probably be using eye drops myself. I know we used GenTeal Drops for Severe Dry Eyes (or eye in JD's case ) for the remainder of his life, twice a day for almost 3 years, I think. :duh Maybe I'll try some myself. :duh :lol Quote Wendy and The Whole Wherd. Guest Obidog
Jed has pannus and he wears his doggles without issue. I have only just started putting them on him since he came home, but his are the sunglass type not the goggle type.
