  1. I would check for UTI. Many times this mimics dementia. Very common in people too.
  2. As hard as it is for you, you have to remember to put the dog first. Sometimes the most humane thing is to send them on. If the increase of meds isn't making a difference I would really think about quality of life. It doesn't sound like it's good. I'm terribly sorry for what you're going through.
  3. I would be concerned about pancreatitis. I would take him in for more IV support. He may continue with some bloody stools for a while. I've dealt with pancreatitis & HGE. Both can become extremely serious fast. The vet should keep him until he can hold down food without vomiting.
  4. If he has LS it may be he loses control at night when he's totaly relaxed. This happened to my male, Dalton, who was almost 14 when I had to euthanize. I took him to A&M vet school & we did lots of tests. Ultimately he just couldn't hold it at night when he was in a deep sleep.
  5. Not only is Gulf Coast expensive, I'm just unimpressed compared to others. I've had 2 seizure dogs & yes the meds have improved tremendously. For example, a neurologist may give zonisamide for a trial. It does Not have the side effects as some. If you do go the zonismide way message me & I will tell you best prices in our area. I hope you can find an answer to help you!
  6. I live in Houston. I would recommend NHVS, North Houston Vet Specialist or Texas A&M Vet School. Who does your Vet recommend? Personally, I'm not a fan of Gulf Coast. I've used all of these & was very impressed with both NHVS & A&M. Did you get your dog from the track or GPA-H? Have you seen an Ophthalmologist for her?
  7. I'm terribly sorry about the diagnosis. I'm in NE Houston. You're at a good vet. I am Shocked at their opinion as well as GPA-H if this is what they really meant. I've had several grey's with osteo & only went the pain management route for numerous reasons. I think the most important decision is what You think is best for George. No One knows George like you do. That's why I'm shocked at your vets & Adoption reps opinion. Do what's right for you two & the heck with the rest. Prayers for peace, comfort & wisdom.
  8. Did your vet send the rads to be read by a radiologist? I live in Houston too. Who is your vet? Lots of resources here in Houston. A&M vet school is less than two hours away too. Sadly, I lost my first greyhound at age 6 from osteo.
  9. Not everything has an answer. One of mine whines & it's simply her way of communicating. nothing is wrong in her world. I know you say you're relaxed but I have a feeling you're worrying over nothing & she's picking up on it. Just go with the flow & enjoy the "newness" of every day! Winnie is still settling in to a routine & so are you.
  10. Have you tried fish oil or coconut oil? I use both with great success. Try a teaspoon of coconut oil in her food. Is the protein chicken you are using? The kennel uses turkey. Mine do best on turkey or salmon. You can also rub coconut oil on her skin.
  11. For now, keep the routine consistent! It sounds like it was a successful morning. A dog walker/pet sitter is an excellent thing! I know it is warm, but I hear temps will fall a bit this week. Keep up the good work!!
  12. Try to keep your routine the same Every day. This will help. If Winnie is settling after 10 minutes she is getting it. Remember to really exercise her. Give her a treat that is high value when you leave. You're doing greyt! And she is too. She isn't quite used to being alone like this but she will get it.
  13. You have Giselle, Winnie now right? She's at a good weight. I wouldn't change a thing. She doesn't have any GI issues. Take a deep breath & relax! You two are fine! I agree don't make a fuss over her food. She's not exercising a lot so her needs aren't high. If she doesn't eat within 30 minutes pick it up. She's simply saying she's had enough not that she doesn't like it. I would be careful with add ins right now. She's new to home life & you. Black dogs tend to have and/or show dandruff more. I add in coconut oil for mine. But it's not a big deal that she has it. It's typical to blow their farm coat. I use a furminator on mine but still some dogs shed more or some are seasonal shredders as the days get shorter/longer. Please continue to be in contact with your adoption rep at GPA-H. They are here to help! Welcome to the wonderful world of greyhounds.😄
  14. I know it's late but please add two more, Avril & Zeus. Both were mine. Lost all 3 of mine in less than 6 months. I miss them terribly but so blessed to have the memories....
  15. Could you please add my sweet Dalton. I would so much appreciate it, Ducky. He was just weeks shy of his 14th BD. His body just failed. What an incredible dog! I miss him terribly....
  16. I remember Gus' capture and all that was done. it was guite the adventure and all of us here in Houston were beyond thrilled. I've followed your story all the way up until a few weeks ago. I don't think you failed Gus but I understand your feelings. He had a lot of things that were hard to overcome and you couldn't have saved him in the end. I think you of all people would say to remember the good times and not dwell in the past. I'm just thankful he didn't have to make the trip back here. You have been and will continue to be in my thoughts. In the end, you were Gus' world. You mattered. RIP Gus....
  17. I currently have a permanent foster who is 11. He was not neutered until he was 10, He had severe prostattitis. He is doing well now considering all his issues which were numerous. He does have accidents but I"m not sure how much of that is related to this or other issues.
  18. I live in Houston but not in your area. Just call vets in your area. You will find that many vets in Houston know greys b/c of the track. Being on the gpa list means they give discounts to the group not that they are the only grey savy vets in Houston. My vet isn't on the list and I wouldn't trade my vet for anything. Best of luck on your move.
  19. I would encourage you to have the corns on Cosmo lasered. In my experience the hulling doesn't last very long. Some are getting good relief with the laser. We have a new Permanent Foster, Zeus, who has many health issues with corns being one. He had them lasered 6 weeks ago and had them redone last week. The first time they did not go deep enough. It helped but some came back. Again, Zeus has many issues but we (GPAH) decided it was worth repeating. Dr. Wall in The Woodlands is the one who does the laser surgeries for most of the dogs in the group. If you want pictures send me a message and I will show you what Zeus feet looked like before, after laser and now. I don't know how to post pics on here. Best of luck for your "corn dog" they are a pain! ETA Dalton has them too and I just dremel and hull his myself. I use lotion, olive oil etc. I've tried interferon etc. Still problematic. ugh....
  20. I just wanted to add that I think you absolutely did the right thing by returning him. I do know the group and the dog. He is doing well and has been seeing a grey savy vet. He had his corns lasered and additional work up. He's been to the vet several times. Please remember that this is a group of volunteers who work hard at finding homes for greyhounds. I know the members who make these decisions and they are fantastic people. There are certain times that a decision has to be made. Not every one will like all decisions. The group stood by its committment to always take a greyhound back. For this I'm thankful. There is no judgement on my part but we all need to remember we are only reading one side of the story.
  21. that is Zoey from The Woodlands. I love her! I hope you didn't believe anything the owners told you. She looks fantastic!
  22. Extremely sorry. My sympathy to your for your loss.
  23. I am so sorry. I have been down this road more times that I can say. Osteo advances differently in each dog. I've had them gone within 5 days and some stay for weeks. I am firm believer in quality of life and won't go to extremes. I've never had luck with the IV pamidronate or radiation and is doubtful I would ever try again. Gabapentin has been used for years for osteo. I think it a long with tramadol is the best combo I've found. Some do good with previcox. I think you have to decide what you are willing to do and what you are willing to put your dog through. I always go with a day too early is better than a day too late. With that being said, you know your dog best and what they/you can tolerate. I really hope you have much more quality time! Keeping you in my thoughts.
