I haven't read this entire thread so this may not be applicable but I would highly suspect a TBD that's been dormant and is active again due to previous anesthesia etc. I hope they push doxy and fast. Has any one mentioned prednisone? I've seen TBD activate like this in my practice.

The lepto vaccine is not a sure bet to keep your canine from getting it. It doesn't provide protection against them all.

Push the DOXY! Daisy had similar symptoms and her platelets dropped to 35,000. They gave her an injection of Doxy (not sure what mg) and from that moment on, her platelet count went up. We never figured out what caused her sickness. She went to every specialist there is. We believe it was a TBD lying dormant. She recovered wonderfully and was on Doxy for I believe 3 months and has never relapsed....

Come on, Jaynie, YOU CAN BET THIS!

Please let us know what the specialist says. He/she MIGHT have the answers. Love, hugs, prayers and lots of good luck! Dee and The Five

My thoughts, exactly! TBDs, can lay dormant, as you said, and trauma, surgeries, etc., can "waken" them. Three of my five have positive titers for Babesia, which is rarely tested in a "regular" veterinarian's panel, right? Mine were done through Protatek Labs. Anyway, all their PCRs for the disease were negative.

Let's hope they get to the bottom of this soon!

Suze is sending powerful prayers to Jaynie - she went through the same thing in February. NO PLATELETS upon admission along with horrorfyingly high BUN and Creatinine. It took 4 days for her to show signs of recovery. We never got a diagnosis - every test in the book was run twice - all negative.

If Suze can do it, Jaynie can, too! LET THE POWER OF GT GET THIS GIRL ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY! Come on, sweetheart - we're holding you tightly in our prayers. :hope:hope:hope:hope:hope:hope

Just got back from the appointment with the specialist. I really liked him and feel Jaynie is in the right hands.

I haven't seen the latest labs, but he did say her kidney values were improving. He doesn't know why they failed to begin with, but suspects a combination of some event (my word, I can't recall his) and dehydration. The "event" could be the post-surgical Metacam, a TBD, Lepto, or another toxin of some sort. He is going to get hold of the tick and lepto results as he hasn't seen them yet. He is also going to run a urine culture and ultrasound her kidneys. He is not yet able to say how much of her kidney function will return. To my immense relief he doesn't plan to biopsy the kidneys.

My clinic didn't take a urine sample before putting Jaynie on fluids last week, so he is missing a test result he wishes he had. Also, since they had done bloodwork so recently (after the dental) no bloodwork was done immediately prior to the spay, so we don't have that as a basis for comparison either.

The platelet issue is the other thing he will pursue. He is going to contact the lab to verify the accuracy of the results, and then take it from there. I think they had already sent blood over from this AM but the results weren't back yet.

I may be forgetting some things, but the important thing is that he is good at what he does, and he's now on Jaynie's case. I believe he will be able to resolve this if anyone can.

Not sure what the timeline is on all the above, but my sense is that a bunch of it will happen today, so I am hopeful I will get an update sometime later today.

He said that he doesn't think she's in immediate danger and I hope he's right.

It does sound like this vet is on the right track, and I am glad she isn't in any immediate danger at this time.

Still sending lots of love, hugs and prayers to you from us! Dee and The Five

I have to admit, I took a deep breath before reading your post Mary, but it sounds like Jaynie is in the best possible hands. Not to insinuate she wasn't before, but this guy is a specialist and it's what Jaynie needs. Plus you have an excellent recomendation for him.

Hopefully there will be improvement throughout the day.

Thank God Monday has arrived and she is in the hands of the specialist, he also knows Dr. Couto? That should help a lot should he have any questions!! God Bless that little girl of yours! My little girl is also only 4 years old and I can just imagine how heart sick I would be. (not that age matters in love) Prayers and good thoughts and lots and lots of :grouphug:grouphug
