Sirius (the Dog Star) will be the brightest star in the southern sky, but it glows more brightly now because a new angel hound is there. His twinkling bright and sweet persona left us to become an angel just a few days ago. Keota George was his racing name or just George to his family. George came to us only six months ago at the age of ten. He had been returned to GPA Indy and into foster after many years in a home. Why he was returned is unknown to us. What is known is that it could not have been the fault of this sweet and wonderful old fellow. George instantly stole our hearts and settled in with his new family of two other greys and a 4 pound Chihuahua. Just over two weeks ago, George started to limp. Our worst fear was osteo, but X-rays proved it not the case. Our vet thought George just had a strain or a pull, but he was in lots of pain. The pain was extremely difficult to manage. We tried many different types of meds, but none seemed to give our sweet boy relief—rather, it gave him diabetes because of his pancreatic condition. He lost ten pounds in just five days, and was then started on insulin injections twice daily. My wife and I took turns staying up all night with our old boy to try and comfort him as much as possible. One more trip to the vets revealed a tumor on sweet George’s spine. Neurotin was prescribed, but still no relief from the unrelenting pain, just stupor from the drug. If we could just control his pain, he would have at least a few good months, but we could not and he was tired. How much longer do we try, a most painful question for George and his family. We chose to let our sweet boy rest and run free with our other angels Friday morning. Our family takes comfort in knowing the right decision was made for our wonderful family member.
