OK, I called the vet, because the less I have to move Outlaw the better...... I had a pretty long conversation about a lot of the options that were mentioned here.

He is calling me in a prescription for the nuerontin as we speak and I will go pick that up very soon. He can take it with all that he is on now.

I mentioned pred shots and I would have to go to a specialist for that, he said it is an option though...

Laser therapy... he didn't seem to know much about it as to whether it worked or not... I may get another opinion on that, he kinda scoffed

Acupuncture-a possibility as well, he sounded upbeat about that and said it would be worth a try. I have contact info for a vet in Addison that does this, thanks Burpdog ;)

They did take x-rays of the vertebrae between his shoulder blades and had seen nothing wrong there (that would show up on x-ray at least)

I mentioned Deramaxx and metacam and he said that can not be taken with the pred. Evidently that is in the same family as the zubrin that I was giving him before that did not give him much relief. (also rimadyl is the same kind of pain reliever)

I did not mention chiro, I really don't like the idea of it.

OK, as for the tummy problems he is on 75mg of Zantac twice a day, given with the pred and the tramadol. So some of you suggest giving that 30 minutes before the pred? I can definitely try that!

As of now, he has laid down two times with minimal whimpering which is good but last night he woke us up no less than three times crying out and whimpering from changing positions... :(

I forgot to mention his weight.... on

7/28 he weighed 72

8/3 he weighed 69.5

8/5 he weighed 68

I would be willing to bet that he has lost another two pounds :(

I am off to get the Nuerontin now and we shall see how that does.

My Morgan had several episodes where he "threw his neck out" for lack of a better term. He was treated with pred., diazepam (valium), and a pain killer for a few days and it would "pop" back in and return to normal. The Vet thought it was a soft tissue injury. We took him for a neurologist consult and he thought it was a soft tissue neck/shoulder injury too. The first episode took the longest to resolve. Looking at my notes, we tapered the medications over a 2 week period. After the 2nd episode, I kept the medications on hand to treat immediately when it happened.

Hoping the new med does the trick. When Misty was on the high dose of Pred I would give her the Carafate an hour before meals

Holly, I am so sorry you're having to deal with all this!

Did the vet think it might be a pinched nerve in the neck?

Keeping you and Outlaw held up in prayer, and hoping the neurontin works!!!

I am sorry Outlaw is in so much pain. My first grey Shane had trouble with his neck during our first year together. He would wake up screaming in pain when he tried to move. I would take him to the vet who gave him prednisone and he would get better fairly quickly. It happened a few times and the vet started talking about surgery but suddenly it stopped and never bothered him again. Hoping Outlaw feels better real soon.

OK, I have given him his first dose of the Nuerontin. Maybe an hour ago. He ate a little and had some K9 cookies and a muffin that Jackie made for my furkids....... couldn't get him to drink but there was a lot of water in his food....we will see how he is in a few hours when he needs to go potty. This medication is given three times a day.

Now he is sleeping soundly. The pharmacist told me it may make him drowsy.... huh, guess he doesn't know greyhounds ;)

You know I am always so scared to change meds, I am scared he will hurt more on a different one, but this time we are just adding to what he is on already so it can only get better right? I hope we can get this new one to help enough that we can get him on a lower dose of pred. It is a very high doseage :( I have to take Smiley, my foster in tomorrow for his second round of heartworm treatment and I may swing by the acupuncture place and see what their prices and appointment times are.

If you have had acupuncture on your dog, what has been the average cost per visit?

Couple things to consider:

- Make absolutely sure there's nothing going on with the foot. Sometimes hard to get a reaction when manipulating -- dog will be stoic at that time, then still limp. I'm surprised vet didn't x-ray it.

- Consider stopping the Tramadol for a couple days. Sometimes pups have not-so-useful reactions to that drug. Can cause inappetance, for example, and may not be effective for pain caused by inflammation.

- Make sure you are giving some tummy meds, such as Pepcid, while he's on prednisone. Here we usually give pepcid, wait 30 minutes, feed meal, then give our prednisone or other anti-inflammatory.

- If he has hurt his neck/back, rest and anti-inflammatory is what he needs. So far as possible, no stairs, no running, no playing, no jumping up and down off things; supportive bedding; food and water at a height that seems comfortable for him (you may have to hold the bowl a few times to determine this).

Sending hugs and prayers for your handsome fellow.

I agree with the above , remember he's 11 will put him on my Prayer list.

The cost for acupuncture will vary depending on your area I would imagine.

Tanner had it done for quite some time and it was 66.00 a session

Poor Outlaw. It would be nice to actually find out what the problem is. Hopefully he's feeling better quickly.

I 've been praying here for some good news for Outlaw and you. I hope that he is on the way to recovering. I'm an old lady and it takes me longer to recover from injuries so may be the same for the pups.
