Fiona & Racoon Attack

Poor little girl. I hope she heals quickly. Pleas don't blame yourself. These things happen no matter how much you check and watch them. It only takes a second. You got her to the vet right away and she will be fine. That's what is important.

Don't beat yourself up about it! We have had a cat incident (domestic short hair) in our backyard, and in Staggerlee's teeth, a rat, and other varments, and WE TOO use the flashlight and go out with ours.

Luckily, yesterday, we found the poisonous Cottonmouth Snake before the dogs did!

IT IS GOOD THAT YOU WERE OUT THERE, or it COULD have been worse!

Hugs and good luck! Dee and The Five

Fiona's back home and looking tired but happy to be here. Her face is swollen and very bruised and it will take some healing but I feel much better having her with me. She ate a small meal of soft food & baked ham pieces with her medication for pain and is now tucked in on her favorite bed.

Thank you everyone for supporting me today - it's nice to know when something happens GreyTalk is here with advice, support and tons of good wishes! You are the best!!

Please don't blame yourself, however vigilant we are with our pups, events beyond our control, unfortunately do sometimes still happen. Hugs for Mom :bighug and gentle scritches for Fiona. I hope your little girl heals well and quickly.

That is one of our biggest fears is the racoons also. Fortunately they have stayed on the roof but NOW I am really going to be extra careful. Please do not be so hard on yourself. It could have happened to anyone of us. Hugs to mom and your babies.

Wow, how awful! I always check the yard for critters, too; fortunately the 'coons here seem to avoid the fenced in front yard in favor of my back pasture. Don't beat yourself up; if the animal had its back turned to you, they are very difficult to see. Glad that the damage was not worse and that you had the foresight to use gloves when checking out your pups (but maybe you should still check wih your doc just to see if they think you are safe!)

I wonder how the tooth got dislodged? I guess it could have come loose if she got a good hold on the 'coon's head and it pulled away. In any case, sorry she lost the tooth but hoping her other wounds heal quickly.

I hope she feels better soon.

Don't beat yourself up. We share this world with lots of interesting critters, something is bound to happen sometime. You did the best you could.

Fiona had a quiet night and ate some soft food for breakfast this morning. She's doing better than I expected and I am sure the two pain medications from the vet are making her comfortable (although sleepy). Here's a photo of the wound:

Fionawound2.jpg

We were very lucky that things weren't a lot worse. When she's up and about she seems happy (although a little spacey) and is very content to have me sit with her and stroke her fur. The drain will come out on Friday and then the stitches in another two weeks.

I am in the process of having motion detector lights installed on the back of our garage to prevent anything like this from happening again. It should deter any critters that want to hang around our property (I hope!).

Thanks again for all your good thoughts for Fiona.

Edited because after yesterday, I'm a little spacey myself!

I am so sorry you are having to go through this and best of luck for poor Fiona. She sounds like she's on the mend, which is great to hear!

Just a note about the motion sensor lights - they are unlikely to scare away the critters. They will, however, allow you to see more clearly in your yard. When ours go off at home, the only thing the animals (deer, skunk, raccoon, coyote) do is look around and carry on about their business. I've seen various animal repellant gizmos that deter by sound or water but have no experience with them. Good luck and lot's of healing wishes for your pupper.

OMG I missed this thread yesterday! :ohno I'm so sorry this happened to Fiona. Poor girlie :(

So glad she's home and starting to heal... that last picture looks really uncomfortable, poor baby. But looking at it, it could have been a LOT worse. I hope you're doing okay, too :grouphug :grouphug

UGH. Poor Fiona!

One thing we try to remember to do every time we go outside at night is to rattle the screen door so the squirrels and raccoons can scamper away quickly before I let the dogs out. Stranger loves a good squirrel chase, and takes personal offense at having non-dog creatures on his property. Giving them a 30 second head start to clear the yard works pretty well, and lessens the risk of injury to Rosemary and Stranger or the creatures.

Feel better, pretty girl.
