HopeForHounds
Jake has another swollen foot and lower leg. We are waiting this one out, so that our vet can do a fine needle and a joint tap. That requires it to be more swollen than it is now. Hopefully we will finally have an answer as to why this keeps happening. Since April 21 2008 he has had 5 incidents of swelling and redness in 3 different legs. Twice in his back right, twice in his front right and once in his back left. We have a theory, and if we are right we can treat with anti-inflammitory meds. Jake is a low positive Von Willebrand, so he could be simply twisting an ankle and then having bleeding in the joint. Keep your fingers crossed we can get an answer this time. HopeForHounds
Jake did really well having his joint tapped. The worst part was when Miki shaved his wrist he did not like the razor. He didn't move or even wince when the needle went in, I did. We won't know anything until the end of the week. Miki sent two samples, one to check for bacteria and one to check for auto-immune reactions and to see if white cells are fighting bacteria. Some bacteria's don't survive long enough to show up in the first test, if the white cells are fighting then there is a bacterial infection. Jake is on Metacam, since he had an odd reaction to rymadil. I will also add some traumeel now since I can treat the swelling. I've felt awful letting it grow so big. Guest GentleHugs
This might be kind of out there but could that be a reaction to a spider bite? Back in 2003, Heisman had one of his legs swell up and he started limping - not once but twice and on 2 different legs. It happened during the spring time when most spiders, snakes, etc are coming out due to warmer weather. I took him in, thinking the worst and my vet said he had seen a lot of spider bites and snake bites in the prior 2 weeks before I brought in Heisman. Heisman got a shot for inflamation and was walking around normal that afternoon (except for the excessive peeing from the shot). He also said I could give him a benadryl, too, if I wanted. The next day, I found the spider's web outside. It was in a place where Heisman LOVED to go pee at all the time. Guess the spider got a little pi**ed off about Heisman peeing on his parade or something and bit him in retaliation! Recently, I got bit by a spider on the inner part of my lower thigh. It swelled, turned red and had a huge knot, too. It's been about a week or so and it's still trying to heal. Looks better than it did but it scared me at first. HopeForHounds
I thought spider bite the first time it happened. Sadly that isn't it. We can't find a mark anywhere to indicate a bit. Plus sometimes there is a fever, sometimes not. Always about 5 days of increasing swelling, then it starts to go away. Guest GentleHugs
I thought spider bite the first time it happened. Sadly that isn't it. We can't find a mark anywhere to indicate a bit. Plus sometimes there is a fever, sometimes not. Always about 5 days of increasing swelling, then it starts to go away. With Heisman, we never did find any puncture wounds from a spider and he never ran a fever either. In fact, he never acted like it bothered him except when it swelled - he limped. The first time he got bit, I wasn't for sure what had happened. He was walking fine on it then it swelled. Then the swelling went down. A week later, same leg - same thing happened only I took him in to the vet that time. That's when my vet said it was a spider bite. He said trying to find the exact location of the bite is very hard sometimes. They are not always as obvious as finding one on a human are. After we got rid of the spider and it's home that I suspected was the offending spider - Heisman never got bit again. Anyway - it was just a long shot guess of what it could have been for Jake. I hope you find out what's wrong soon and he gets back to being normal. Poor boy - that foot does not look good.
